glove box broken, won't stay closed
my glove box door was jammed closed one day. Using the handle wouldnt activate the hook that keeps the door closed so I had to pull it open with force. Now that tiny hook inside that holds the door closed is broken. Is there anyway to fix this? I tried getting to the hook in the glove box door so I can replace it by removing the glove box handle and peeling back the leather but I dont see a way to get to it

I found out I cant just replace that one piece and need a whole new glove box door. the dealer's price was $389 but they said they would get me one for $311. the cheapest place I found was parts.com and it was $218.....can anyone find a better price for me?

I have to replace my front control arms (3 out of 4) and the tie rod.
These parts from parts.com, are they Mercedes OE parts?

Not worth starting a thread, just posting in case anyone has the same stupid problem as me. I could not get the glove box to stay shut all of a sudden. As far as I could tell the latch was working correctly and would clip down and release as it should (the whole design sucks). Anyway my problem was simply that the clip with the metal bar (on the dash) was pushed back ever so slightly into the dash that it didn't press the latch down far enough for it to click. I levered it carefully out with a screwdriver.

Those website mb parts places seem to have varying amounts of savings, so be sure to cross check pricing amongst a few of your fav.
For ex.... Just because you found one part lowest at parts dot com does not mean you won't come across a high priced item. This happened to me when I was doing my facelift bumper. Gl

You can loosen the 2 screws holding the catch and move it forward a touch.

I didn't notice any screws. On the door or the dash side?

I just purchased a used CLK500 with a similar glove box issue. The Seller said it would stay closed but sometimes you had to slam it. And, it did work that way when I looked at the car. The glove box was shut when he delivered the car. The first time I opened it, I could not get it to stay shut. I need help! It looks like the catch (dash side) is pushed into the dash, and it seems that the latch does not have any "hook" left on the end, so I don't see how it could possibly work.
I cannot get the catch with the metal bar (on the dash) to stay out of the dash where the latch can touch it. Any slight push and it falls back into the dash. I cannot see how to get to it unless I need to remove the CD player. I went to the dealer and he wanted to sell me a light switch because their diagram showed the light switch in the center of the glove box. Anyway, I wired it shut for now, but any help is appreciated!

Thank you! That helps me a lot. I tried getting that screw out, and my screwdriver is just too long to fit in there. While I was looking and feeling, I found another further back, so it seems like mine has two? I'm going to cut the top half of the torx handle down to fit.
Thanks again for the help and the pictures!

Alright, I got the torx screwdriver and removed the screws, but I wasn't able to get the CD player to move from it's left side attachment. So, I started thinking outside the box...yes, pun intended!
I bought some High strength SURPLUS NEODYMIUM MAGNETS from K&J Magnetics online ([email protected]$1.78 plus shipping) and epoxied one to the upper left side on dash where the glove box door closes, and made a custom metal plate (1" x 1/2" x 1/8" thick) on the door to mate to it. With a loose magnet in between, it latches up and stays shut as if it was new. When you open the door, all you see is the nickel plated block magnet, and it does not look bad at all.
No outrageous money paid the dealer, either and that was priceless!!

That's a great idea. I was trying to think of alternatives that wouldn't look terrible.

glovebox fixed
After about 8 months I decided to try the magnet trick. But then I was reading other posts about the hinge that the lid grabs onto and how people manipulate it. Mine doesn't have screws and it didn't look like it could move. I put a mini superbar under it and nudged it forward. Glove box hinges now! A new glovebox would not have helped. Hope someone else benefits from this.

glovebox
I'll post a picture once I get out of here (work). I'll try to describe it better.
There's the 'rod' that the latch grabs onto. The rod is on the box itself, the latch is on the lid. When you push it close the latch hugs the rod and closes around it. My rod piece was pushed in slightly...just enough that the latch couldn't catch it. Visually the rod looks set in place and not meant to move. I took the small superbar and carefully forced it forward. To my amazement it moved. Mine does not have screws holding it in as some people describe. After I nudged it forward a bit the latch caught. I had taken it to several mechanics and they all said my latch was broken and I needs a new lid...wrong! The new lid would not have caught the rod either. I'll post pic.

little trick when closing hold at the bottom of the glove box, not the handle. and push the entire box vertically up with force. only way mine shuts.
works everytime

bar
I wedged it forward. It's in its 'hole' extremely tight. I didn't think it would move and it took a lot of pressure. I don't think anything holds it in place except for the fact that it's a tight fit. Glove box has been operating normally for about 2 weeks now.

Cool. Yeh I was trying to figure out something to slip behind it so it stays forward but if you're saying with enough pressure it stays forward, I'll give it a try. Just wouldn't want to break that thing off. That would suck.

Yeh me too now. So this past weekend I put in this metal piece behind the bar that would keep it out farther to help the latch catch it. Closed on the first try.

I previously had a 2009 CLK350 before purchasing my 2006 CLK55. I've found the 2006 construction to be far inferior with regard to quality and fitment. Glove box is finicky as well as folding passenger side seat. Common problem in early models -unfortunately.

honestly... i don't think there is a fix for it. I had to break into mine by prying it open then crazy gluing the lock back. but then there is still the issue of opening the glove compartment once its closed... and i don't have a solution for that.

what was previously stated was correct. I managed to fix mine. it's hard to explain but open it up and the bottom will be slightly out of line. or the internals of the mechanism aren't straight. you have to make sure the latches pull the clips in when pulling lever before lowering it. or it will lock check the bottom of the center console is the only advice I can give. you don't have to pull it apart it would have just come loose over time.. to open it your going to have to force it and pray that nothing snaps. Sorry but I hope that's of some help. it is fixable quiet easily if you look at the bottom of the main center console and check if anything is loose. and the mechanism itself is fairly straight forward. just have a play.
it will pop back into place and work properly just by putting force on the right area.

Because your latch isn't working it's already out of line and not securing properly. make use sure you have the lever up. but not so forceful you pull the plastic top off. jiggle it hard to the left, then hard to the right whilst raising it. make sure its in unlocked key position. from memory there's springs on the prongs that keep the box in the grooved track. don't put the box back in position until you have rectified the problem. the more times you force it, opening it the lowering it getting it jammed. the more fatigued it will get. you should be fine theres enough play in it to allow for this malfunction. I'm sure Mercedes will happily source one for you for am extravagant price.
where else can you use said part number aside from a dealership?

Welp I am glad I found this thread. My damn glove box will open and you have to SLAM it shut or it won't lock... going to investigate this tonight and see if I can fix the issue! Hopefully things can be adjusted!

there isn't a new part for it... you have to buy a whole new glove door. i've been searching all over the net and there is just no solution for this except the $300 glove door. smh. needless to say mine is still locked shut.

I would install a strong magnet as someone else mentioned rather than buy a whole new door. Unless it was looking shabby anyway.

I just fixed the glove box. Had to remove the cd changer which was only one top bolt, slide the thing out and unplugged it. Then saw the loose latch/bolt under the top of the glove box. Pulled it all the way out and tightened it then closed the glove box.. .BOOM! FIXED, but wasn't happy with the gap, so I played around with moving the latch in more and now it's perfect! LOVE IT! Thank you!!!! No more SLAMMING the glove box shut, I thought for sure I was going to break it after a couple times. Now it's great :-)

you had just one bolt on the right side of the changer in the glove box???...I am seeing two and they appear to be Torx head (my current Torx headed screwdriver is too long) off to the hardware store for something shorter...

I see...there is one Torx headed screw going from bottom to top on the right side, then the CD Changer pivots out to the left, then you can remove the two connectors to the changer, then use the same Torx headed driver to tighten the screw into the latch...(T-20 size Torx head...thanks Yidney!) worked like a charm for me...thanks everyone...my glove box door is now aligned with the other parts on the dash and closes just fine...

'05 CLK55
I recently had a similar problem where the glovebox on my '05 CLK55 would not close. I was almost sure that one of the locks on the glovebox door itself was broken, but after hours of troubleshooting i was able to fix it by locking and unlocking the car with the remote and jostling the interior locking mechanism on the glovebox door with a screwdriver.
Hoping this will help someone else. Good luck!
