How to get water blocks in minecraft

Figuring out how to make Minecraft infinite water as early as possible is a great way to make farming easier. It means you can easily create obsidian when you find lava, make rivers to travel down, and even construct elevators. You can also use water to help automate farming, so there’s really no shortage of uses for water in the chill building game.

One redditor has gifted us all with an effortless way to solve our water needs thanks to a unique interaction between bonemeal and water blocks. They simply dig a little hole, place the water above it, and then use bonemeal to create kelp. Doing this turns all of the flowing water blocks into normal water blocks. All you have to do then is use your bucket to collect the new water blocks, and you’re golden.

You can do whatever you want with it at this point too, because you’ve essentially created water from nothing, which means there are no risks in messing about with it as you see fit.

It all works, as IcePopcorn explains, because of the same mechanic that is “used to make bubble elevators,” which involves using kelp to transform the water blocks into a water source. You just plop the kelp in an underwater place that’s not a source water block to convert it. That’s not really how water works in the real world, but thankfully, Minecraft isn’t the real world.

How To Make an Infinite Water Source From 1 Block from Minecraft

There’s been a slew of helpful discoveries on the Minecraft subreddit recently, with both this and the joy of silent lava being near the top of our list of personal favourites. Of course, there are also a bunch of cool Minecraft hacks coming from YouTube too, with one video recently being a smorgasbord of excellent pointers for more established players.

When Minecraft updated to version 1.13, a changed dubbed "The Flattening" was introduced. In "The Flattening", numerical IDs and item data was removed, and some item IDs were changed to make them more logical - Water was one of the many items that had their IDs changed.

For this reason, if you're playing on a Minecraft version below 1.13 (1.12, 1.8, 1.7), you should use what we've named a legacy ID for this item. The legacy ID for water is:

Water has a data value of 0. You will need to add this to commands, along with its legacy item ID (below), to spawn it.

Here are some tips for using water in Minecraft.

Water Physics

There are two kinds of water block in Minecraft:

Water Source Blocks

Source blocks are still water. These are the kinds of block that can be picked up or placed using a bucket. Source blocks can be destroyed by placing a solid block such as dirt or sand in the space they occupy.

Naturally occuring seas and lakes are made of source blocks.

Moving Water

Moving water flows from source blocks. It does not interact with buckets.

How water flows

On a flat surface, water spreads horizontally 7 blocks from a source block. However, if the water can find a way to move downwards, it will go downwards instead.

Water spreads 7 blocks in all directions from a single source block on a flat surface.

Water that has a chance to move downwards will do that instead of moving horizontally.

Duplicating source blocks

When two source blocks are placed one block apart, the flowing water inbetween will be converted to another source block. This can be used to fill in large areas with still water, and to make wells.

Buckets

Water is picked up and placed using a bucket (right click). Placed water forms a source block; water will flow from the source block, downwards and up to 7 blocks horizontally. Moving water cannot be picked up.

Wells

Sometimes called "infinite springs", a well is a 2x2 hole, 1 block deep. Pour two buckets of water into opposite corners. Now, however much water you take from the well, it will always refill itself. This means that 2 buckets of water is always enough to bring with you for any hydroengineering project you start!

You can also build a well by placing water at each end of a 3x1x1 trench; in this case only the center block is replenished when water is removed.

Hydraulic Engineering

Water channels/conveyors

Sometimes you will want to use a stream of water to carry objects from one place to another.

Place a step down every 7 blocks to continue the water movement. Or place a step plus a new water source every 8 blocks.

Mobs and items are pushed one block past the end of water, so if the water stream comes up to the edge of a hole, the cargo will be dumped into the hole.

Splitting streams

If water is given the opportunity to spread downwards, it doesn't also go sideways. This makes it easy to create 2 or 3 streams from a block with water placed on top.

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft water with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, water is all around you in the game. Wherever you see a river, lake or ocean, there are water blocks.

Although water is found everywhere in the game, you can not make it with a crafting table or furnace. Water is also not available through the Creative Inventory menu. You can use a water bucket to add water to your world. You can also use a game command such as /fill or /setblock, but you can't give yourself water with the /give command.

Where to find Water in Creative Mode

Water is not available in the Creative Inventory menu. You must use a game command or a water bucket to get this item.

How to get a Water Block in Survival Mode

You can add water to your world in Survival mode by using a water bucket. So let's get started!

1. Hold a Water Bucket

First, select a water bucket in your hot bar so that you are holding it in your hand.

2. Use the Water Bucket

Next, position your pointer (the plus sign) on the block where you want to pour the water out of the bucket. The game control to use the water bucket depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click on the block.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the block.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press the ZL button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, right click on the block.
  • For Education Edition, right click on the block.

You should see the water appear on the ground and you will have an empty bucket in your hot bar.

Congratulations, you just learned how to make a water block in Minecraft.
