Maximum Towing Capacity
The three V8 engine options offered on the Grand Cherokee large SUV each deliver best-in-class maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds. The standard V6 offers a slightly less -- yet still impressive -- towing ability of up to 6,200 pounds.
The Grand Cherokee’s base V6 engine delivers adequate power for in-town and highway driving, but it’s not especially impressive. The optional V8 delivers noticeably more power and a throaty exhaust note, but that’s about it. The plug-in-hybrid powertrain delivers good performance, but switching between drive modes can be clunky.
Whichever powertrain you choose, the eight-speed automatic transmission paired with it offers smooth and drama-free shifts.
- "Even when living in the ‘Sport’ end of the rev range, the V6 offers merely adequate power. It’s perfectly adequate for the midsize SUV class, but it’s not remotely invigorating. By contrast, the 5.7-liter Hemi certainly sounds the part and pulls like a freight train on the highway." -- Autoblog (2022)
- "The Grand Cherokee isn’t quick with the V-8 under the hood, but it does feel more than adequately powered — and it sounds lovely, with a nice, deep rumble. The eight-speed automatic transmission is responsive and had no problem finding the right gear for a given situation." -- Cars.com (2022)
- "Thanks to a 17-kWh battery pack, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is expected to have an all-electric range of 25 miles. In our first drive, we found the Grand Cherokee 4xe to feel powerful, capable, and refined." -- Motor Trend (2022)
MPG Estimates
The Grand Cherokee gets pretty good fuel economy ratings when equipped with the standard V6 engine. Models with the optional V8 are notably less fuel-efficient. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, while more frugal with gas than the V6 and V8, doesn’t deliver especially good fuel economy numbers compared to other midsize PHEV SUVs.
- V6, RWD: 19/26 mpg city/highway
- V6, 4WD: 19/26 mpg
- V8, 4WD: 14/22 mpg
- PHEV, 4WD: 56 MPG-equivalent combined (hybrid); 23 mpg combined (gas)
Driving Range and Charging
The Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid (PHEV) can travel an EPA-estimated 25 miles on electric power alone. Using a standard household-style power outlet, it will take roughly 12 hours to fully charge the battery. With a 240-volt Level 2 charging station, you can achieve a full charge in about two hours.
Handling and Braking
Even if you don’t take your Jeep off the beaten path, the Grand Cherokee will impress you with its commendable on-road performance. It delivers confident handling with minimal body roll, and it’s easy to maneuver and park in confined urban areas. It also offers a smooth ride.
