Many buyers want to know where remanufactured compressors come from. There is obvious concern that some remanufactured compressors have suffered more abuse than others or that companies could be pulling old compressors out of the junk pile and trying to pass them off as almost new. To put your mind at ease, here is a quick breakdown of where we source our compressors before we begin the remanufacturing process.
Core Exchange
The primary means of acquiring compressors ready for remanufacturing is through the core exchange process. Nearly every major compressor manufacturer uses this format. Essentially, when you purchase a new compressor, you will see that the invoice has several different line items. The cost of the new compressor as well as taxes and shipping fees are listed. You will also see a line item for a core charge. This is a fee that is charged up front, which is refunded when you receive your old compressor core back. Your technician will send us your old compressor core and that money will be returned or a credit memo issued to your account.
It is important to note that some compressor manufacturers do not break down their invoices this way, so you may not realize that you are paying a core charge with them, but you are. Some companies simply roll it into the cost of the compressor itself without telling you.
Keeping compressor cores in circulation by remanufacturing them is an important part of keeping compressors affordable for all. Without these cores, the cost to build new compressors would increase significantly for all consumers, which is why we encourage people to return them.
Other Sources
On occasion, we also source compressors from indirect lines. For instance, some contractors store old compressors that they have pulled out of businesses and then sell them to us in batches. We also buy from insurance companies who are auctioning or selling compressors after damage claims and investigations have been completed. Oftentimes these compressors have suffered through some weather event that required replacing the entire HVAC unit, while the compressor itself was relatively undamaged. While these are not our primary source of compressor cores, they help keep our supply steady when we need more.
Condition of Compressor Cores
It is also important to know that our goal is to remanufacture compressors to meet or exceed the original manufacturer specifications, not just rebuild them by swapping out wearable parts. Due to this stringent requirement, all of our incoming compressor cores are evaluated to ensure that they can meet our expectations and guidelines. No matter what kind of wear and tear the compressor has been through, it will not be sold as remanufactured until it passes our tests. This ensures that our customers are receiving a consistent and dependable product every single time they buy from us. The difference between remanufactured and rebuilt compressors is an important one, and consumers do have reason to pay close attention to the source and condition of rebuilt compressors which may not meet OEM specifications for their type and size.
If you are in the market for a new or remanufactured compressor, make sure you visit Compressors Unlimited online. We are happy to answer any questions regarding our sourcing and remanufacturing process, and break down your invoice so you can see how much money you will get back when you return your core. As you shop around, you can compare not just the cost of the compressor itself but also the core charges associated with returning your old compressor. In most cases, your HVAC technician will handle the details and shipping to ensure that your core is returned in a timely manner because shipping these items can be difficult.
