Pick Your Own FigsGlen Ewin Estate is one of the best places to pick your own fruit near Adelaide. Glen Ewin is situated near Houghton in the beautiful Adelaide Hills and is a popular wedding and events location. There is a winery on site with a cellar door open to the public year round with a restaurant specialising in local produce. Glen Ewin also produce their own Fig Gin, the catalyst for their fig orchard. Fig picking is available at Glen Ewin from 9am to 3pm each day, February to April. There are five different fig varieties to choose from, and the pop up Fig Bar in the orchard means you can sit and relax with a glass of wine and some food after you’ve chosen your perfect fruit.
Pick Your Own Cherries If you’re looking for a fun family activity, why not go cherry picking? There are many farms near Adelaide that offer this opportunity, mostly in the Adelaide Hills or McLaren Vale regions. Cherry picking season usually starts in December and lasts for about six weeks, depending on when the fruit ripens. Once you have chosen where you would like to go, keep an eye on their social media pages to confirm they are open. The best time to pick cherries is on a sunny day when the fruit is ripe and there is no chance of rain. Here are some of the places where you can pick your own cherries:
Pick Your Own StrawberriesPhoto credit: South Australian Tourism Commission/Adam Bruzzone, Beerenberg Strawberry Farm ‘Pick Your Own’, Adelaide If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with the family, picking your own strawberries is a great option! The most well known place to pick strawberries is Beerenberg Farm, located just outside Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. It is usually open for strawberry picking from late November to early April but watch their socials for the exact start and end date. You can also enjoy a bite to eat at the on-site cafe, or take home some tasty strawberry products from the farm shop. If you are south of Adelaide you may prefer to pick your own strawberries at Harvest the Fleurieu at Mount Compass. For the 2022 season they have opened for strawberry picking from October 22nd. Harvest the Fleurieu have a Markethall open year round where you can purchase their strawberry products such as jam, and products made with other fruits and vegetables they grow as well as other local products. There is also a cafe for a quick coffee and bite to eat.
Pick Your Own ApplesPhoto credit: Kristy Billing @gypsyandherwild, @Lenswood Pick Your Own, Adelaide Hills Just an hour from the city centre, @Lenswood is in the Adelaide Hills and is home to a number of orchards where you can pick your own apples. There are eight different types of apples to choose from, including Red Delicious, Granny Smith, and Fuji, all of which ripen at slightly different times. Keep an eye on their social media for all the details. You can also purchase apple pies, apple cider, and other apple-based goods from the on-site farm shop. Apple picking season is usually later than the other fruits, from approximately February to May and @Lenswood is open on weekends, public and school holidays. They often have extra activities available especially for kids, including a scavenger hunt and outdoor games, so this is something that all the family will love to do. You can make a whole weekend out of apple picking @Lenswood by staying in the luxurious accommodation right at the orchard. This would make the perfect romantic getaway.
Pick Your Own BlueberriesThe Blueberry Patch is located at Mount Compass a great place to pick your own fruit near Adelaide. Their blueberry picking season generally runs from December to February, so if you’re looking for a place to pick your own blueberries, check their social media for exact dates. Blueberries are very susceptible to weather conditions, and The Blueberry Patch did not open for picking your own in 2021/22 due to the unseasonal weather. I’m adding this in here in the hope that this year things will be better. Pick Your Own TayberriesNo, I hadn’t heard of these berries before either! Apparently they are a cross between a raspberry and a blackberry and hail from Scotland. Harvest the Fleurieu has them available for picking from early December (in 2022). As with everything else, the timing is dependent on the weather, and since these are relatively new and there are not a lot around, the season will go quickly. Keep an eye on their socials if you would like to give these a go.
