How could a double stroller work for your 3 kids?

While the Joovy, Peg Perego, & Valco strollers will accommodate all 3 kids in actual seats, some families with 1 newborn + 2 toddlers don’t need a full seat for one of the toddlers, but also can’t use a ride-on board at the back as the toddler may be young and either not able to balance or not able to stand the whole time.

One option is to wear one of the kids, and have the other two ride in the double stroller.

Another option is to use a double stroller that you add a sit-on board to the back for one of your toddlers to use. If your toddler were to get really tired (too tired even for a sit-on board) – depending on your stroller you could wear the baby and pop the 2nd toddler into one of the main stroller seats. 

Listed below are some options for add-on sit-boards that can attach to a wide range of strollers (just make sure to check that the board you want will fit on the stroller you want).

There are limited options for triple strollers. Here are a few more to add but these do NOT take any car seats AND many can not be used until the baby can sit upright unsupported. A triplet mom we helped with her car seats had this stroller and raved about it.

This company makes strollers for day care/preschools. They have several models that will take 4 children (none that take fewer than 4).

BeBeLove USA Triple Jogging Stroller

This gets horrible reviews on Amazon and the company has 2 complaints on the BBB website. From the reviews it sounds like the stroller quality leaves a lot to be desired. The company does not seem to have a website.

Child Craft Triple & Quad Strollers

These strollers (also under the brand name Foundations) are frequently used by day care centers.

Runabout Strollers (1, 2, 3, 4 & 6 seaters)

These strollers are tanks that are built to last – and are often bought by daycares and schools.

Despite the very outdated look of their website, they are in fact still in business and making strollers.

Huge, accessible basket in twin mode. Fits 2 bassinets so both newborns can sleep safely. Fabulous customer service. There’s a reason every NYC mom seems to own this stroller.

Great push & maneuverability. Both seats can be parent or world facing. Fits 2 bassinets so both newborns can sleep safely. Bugaboo sit-on board is great for older siblings.

Bumbleride Indie Twin (Shop: Family-owned / Amazon)

Dreamy push for you & smooth ride for babies with 4 air tires. Fits 2 bassinets so both newborns can sleep safely. Eco-conscious, family-owned company.

Mountain Buggy Duet (Shop: Family-owned / Amazon)

Narrowest side-by-side double with smooth push on 4 air tires. Fits 2 bassinets so both newborns can sleep safely. Has option for toddlers to be parent facing (or world-facing). 

Mountain Buggy Nano Duo (Shop: Family-owned / Amazon)

Lightest double that takes 2 car seats (only 20lbs!). Newborn Cocoon allows newborns to lay flat. Folds compactly – will fit behind 3rd row in many SUVs. Babies parent-facing in car seats or bassinets – and world facing in regular seat.

Additional Filtering Tips:

If you think you might have another child in the future, you might want to look into the double strollers that can later turn into a single as this way you can reuse your stroller (because it would look goofy to push one baby in a double stroller). To select these strollers that can later turn into a single, make sure that you add a filter to the kids column that says AND (not OR) kids have “all of” “1”.  

If you know that you want a side-by-side double, then go into the “Kids” column filter and uncheck the “2 FTB”. 

We have pre-filtered the chart so that you ONLY see the strollers that can take 2 car seats. If you want to broaden your choices, there are more double strollers that can take 2 newborns (either laying flat in the stroller seat or in a bassinet) that can only take 1 car seat at most. You can see these strollers by going into the filter at the bottom of the “car seats” column and adding a check next to “1”.

Inclusion Criteria Changed

Whereas in other parts of this stroller database we have NOT included strollers that only accommodate car seats by the same manufacturer, here we chose to include them as there are so few strollers that accommodate 2 car seats that we felt it important to provide parents of twins with a complete list. All of the strollers in our database will accommodate a car seat made by another manufacturer EXCEPT:

Britax B-Ready can ONLY take a Britax car seat on the bottom – so with twins, you can have 2 Britax car seats or 1 Britax (on bottom) + 1 other manufacturer’s seat (on top). 

Graco strollers will ONLY take Graco car seats

Chicco strollers will ONLY take Chicco car seats

Peg Perego Duette Piroet & Book For Two will only take Peg Perego car seats.

There is some important info to know about each of these triple strollers (click the pink name below to learn more).

This stroller comes with 2 real seats, and a 3rd rear-most platform which allows an older child to either stand or sit (for kids 2.5 years and up). However, you can buy the Caboose Rear Seat (sold separately) which adds an actual seat with a harness for a child who is at least 3 months – turning it into a true triple stroller. Your toddler will be in the rear seat and the babies in the 2 seats up front either in the car seats, or later on in the regular seats. The Caboose rear seat will work when 2 car seats are being used.

This is the king of all triple strollers. It has 3 independent seats – allowing you to not only choose who sits where, but also what direction each child faces.

This side-by-side double stroller is able to accommodate 3 kids when the Toddler SeatX is used. Please note that you can NOT use a car seat on this stroller when the Toddler SeatX seat is used.

To use with newborn twins, the babies will each lay in the main seats (they recline enough to use from birth) and the toddler will be in the Toddler SeatX seat on top. The Toddler SeatX can ONLY be used by children who are able to sit upright unsupported.

We have chosen to list the Austlen Entourage as a double stroller, rather than a triple stroller – as while it can accommodate 3 kids it is only in one specific configuration, and only for a limited time. But… here’s how you can do it. For the duration that you have 1. a baby who can still fit in an infant seat in the rear frame position (we suggest the Chicco Fit2 as it lasts the longest of any infant seat – with the 75th% child fitting until age 2) AND 2. at least one child who is over 6 months but under 35 pounds and can use the second seat… then you can fit 3 kids – with the 3rd child going in the front seat as shown here.

Note: Austlen recommends that 2 kids maximum ride in the Entourage at a time.

How could a double stroller work for your 3 kids?

How many car seats must the stroller take: 2 or 1?

If you want the stroller to take 2 car seats, then make sure to go into the Car Seats column and select “2”. However, if you want to expand your options, look at double strollers that just take 1 car seat (and can allow the other newborn to lay flat or use a bassinet). 

If you want one newborn to be able to lay flat without needing a car seat or bassinet, then in the Newborn Use column, make sure you select “1 seat”.

If you are looking to use a bassinet (which is often a separate purchase) for one of the babies then make sure you select “1 bassinet” in the newborn use column – and if you want to be able to use 2 bassinets, then select “2 bassinets”.

Joovy Big Caboose Graphite

This stroller comes with 2 real seats, and a 3rd rear-most platform which allows an older child to either stand or sit (for kids 2.5 years and up). However, you can buy the Caboose Rear Seat(sold separately) which adds an actual seat with a harness for a child who is at least 3 months – turning it into a true triple stroller. For the first 3 months (corrected age), you’ll need to wear one of the triplets – and thereafter can start using the rear seat and have all babies in the stroller. The Caboose rear seat will work when 1 or 2 car seats are being used.

Peg Perego Triplette

This is the king of all triple strollers as it is the only one (currently on the market) that can take all 3 babies from the day they leave the hospital – either in 3 car seats OR in the actual stroller seats which all lay flat enough to be used from birth. It has 3 separate seats that are all independent of each other and can face either direction. It is the only stroller on the market (in the US) right now that we are aware of that will take 3 car seats.

Valco Baby Tri Mode Duo X

The Valco can NOT accommodate 3 newborns at the same time – as the Toddler SeatX can ONLY be used by children who are able to sit upright unsupported. Families with triplets could choose to wear one baby and put the other 2 either both laying flat in the Valco or 1 baby in the car seat, one laying flat in the Valco until one of the triplets can sit upright unsupported (approximately 6-7 months) and it can then be used as a triple stroller.

When the Valco is used with a car seat you can NOT use the Toddler SeatX seat, which means that the Valco can only be used with 2 children max when the car seat is used.

Note: The Toddler SeatX can ONLY be used by children who are able to sit upright unsupported.

Austlen Entourage… a double that can masquerade as a triple for a brief time

We have chosen to list the Austlen Entourage as a double stroller, rather than a triple stroller – as while it can accommodate 3 kids it is only in one specific configuration, and only for a limited time. But… here’s how you can do it. Snap N’ Go’s are frame-only strollers, meaning that you must use the car seat at all times with these strollers as otherwise there’s nothing for the baby to sit in. This also means that these strollers are obsolete once the baby outgrows the infant seat.

Note: The Baby Trend Snap-N-Go name is very misleading… as car seats do NOT snap into the Baby Trend Snap-N-Go (single or double)… rather, you must STRAP them onto this stroller. The Baby Trend strollers are safe to use, so long as you are diligent about strapping the car seat properly onto it each time. Car seats will snap into the Graco, Chicco, Joovy, and Maxi Cosi snap n’ go’s listed here.

Running Strollers

For those looking for a running stroller, we’ve added some extra columns with info on the wheel size for the front & rear wheels, as well as the max child height.

This table needs to be viewed on a computer, not a mobile device – and is best seen when you click “view larger version” in the bottom right of the table.

Important details about running strollers:

NEVER jog or run with a car seat on any stroller

NEVER jog or run with an infant. Most pediatricians & stroller manufacturers recommend waiting until the child is at least 6-12 months. Baby should be sitting upright unsupported and have excellent head control to withstand the jostling they’ll experience when you jog/run.

NEVER exceed the height limit on a running stroller when using it for running – as it can become unstable.

ALL running strollers have 3 wheels AND air-filled tires (like a bicycle tire)… but not all 3-wheeled strollers with air-filled tires can be used for running. ALL running strollers also have a front wheel that locks (i.e. does not swivel) as for running the front wheel must stay locked.

Running vs Jogging: There is a difference between running and jogging – specifically the speed at which you are going. As you go faster, the stroller must be able to handle this speed and maintain its stability – and this is what really distinguishes a running stroller from the rest. When running, you’ll want to always use the wrist strap to prevent the stroller from getting away from you – especially necessary in case you trip or fall.

The 3-wheeled strollers with air-filled tires that are marked “No run” may be able to handle a slow jog, especially on a paved, flat surface – but as you pick up speed won’t be stable enough. There are quality differences amongst the strollers – and some marked “Y run” may be much nicer to run with than others in terms of how stable they feel and how easy they are to push.

Lockable Swivel Front Wheel: If you plan to walk really fast, jog, or run you’ll want to lock the front wheel for additional stability. You’ll want to unlock the front wheel – and allow it to swivel – when doing normal walking to allow you to easily turn and maneuver the stroller.
