Will be exciting to see the adjustments they bring to both.
Imo what people aren’t talking about is how as the fight went on Poirier started catching Conors rhythm, timing Conors lead uppercut and straight left with his right hook. Even without the calf kicks it was shaping up to be a very different fight
Poirier 2.0 has a lot of habits and skills that make it a tough out for McGregors set of habits and skills. And more importantly he just seemed acutely aware of the dangers McGregor brought and fought an incredibly smart fight.
On the other hand I see a lot of people criticise McGregors change in style and tbh after thinking for a bit I really do think the changes were made specifically to counter Khabib.
less bouncing around to conserve energy
high kick to corner Khabibs exits along the fence if he pressured him back there
MUCH bigger and stronger for obvious reasons
his cage work is a lot better. Poirier has kinda copied quite a bit of Khabib in his own grappling. Whether it’s figure 4ing the legs or going for the high crotch lift when the opponent gets back up along the fence. And you could visibly hear (edit: hear) Kavanagh go like “he’s switching to that he’s switching to that” when Poirier tried the latter. So no doubt they’ve spent years trying to counter that. He did outgrapple Poirier along the fence, but not by much
boxing stance to make it easier to sprawl and harder to just grab the single. Since Khabib was able to get Conor down right in the beginning of the first despite having the worst position ever I think they just decided they just shouldn’t present the leg at all.
