Darkness in the Light Destiny 2 Guide – Malfeasance Exotic

If you’ve had your eyes set on any particular Exotic in Destiny 2, you’ll know that unless it’s something like Devil’s Ruin, you probably have a fair amount of questing to get through.

Whether it’s killing something or someone in a certain way, Exotics are known for being a little tricky to pick up. Here’s our Darkness in the Light Destiny 2 guide if you’re chasing the Malfeasance hand cannon.

Update 8/24/21: During the Destiny 2 2021 Livestream, we got our first proper look at the next expansion, The Witch Queen. Here’s a rundown of what was shown!

Darkness in the Light Destiny 2 step 5

Malfeasance is an Exotic hand cannon that does Kinetic damage. It’s coveted because of something called Explosive Shadow – this weapon will shoot out tainted slugs which bury themselves in your enemies, and stacking enough of these slugs will make them explode.

Now, that’s an incredibly messy end for someone that you don’t like. The weapon is incredibly stable, and can fire 180 rounds per minute. It’s not got the largest magazine, but we’re not complaining about the explosive rounds in the slightest.

Darkness in the Light is the name of the Malfeasance Exotic quest chain, which kicks off with an item called The Seething Heart dropping from an Ascendant Primeval in Gambit. You just have to kill regular matches until one spawns and you kill it. You can’t actually start the questline until this happens. Here are the steps outlined briefly below for you once you’ve got The Seething Heart in hand:

  • The Seething Heart – bring the Seething Heart back to the Drifter
  • City of Secrets – kill 25 Taken bosses or minibosses in search of clues in the Dreaming City
  • The Corrupted – finish the mission The Corrupted by completing the strike
  • The Depleted Weapon Core – bring the Depleted Weapon Core to the Drifter
  • Business As Usual – deposit motes in Gambit and win 10 Gambit matches
  • Lights Out – either kill 4 enemy Guardians in 1 invasion 3 times, or down 4 opponents as an invader before killing 25 opposing Guardians in Gambit
  • Dark Weapon Core – return to the Drifter in the Tower

Once you conclude the final steps, you’ll have completed the Darkness in the Light Destiny 2 quest chain and be able to pick up your completed Malfeasance from The Drifter. Darkness in the Light Destiny 2 step 5

Just got to this point and I've Googled it but can't find anyone explaining what the "Motes of Dark" portion means or how to complete it. I know you've gotta win 10 gambit matches and deposit 400 motes overall but what do I have to do to complete "Motes of Dark"?

Destiny 2’s exotic hand cannons are a blast in more ways than one. If you want to get Malfeasance, you’ll need to complete the Darkness in the Light quest in Destiny 2. As with many other exotic quests, you’ll need to do quite a lot to complete the Darkness in the Light quest for Malfeasance in Destiny 2. We’ll take you through each step below so that you know what you’re doing. Here’s a quick summary of each stage.

  • The Seething Heart: Get the Seething Heart and give it to the Drifter.
  • City of Secrets: Defeat 25 Taken bosses or minibosses in the Dreaming City.
  • The Corrupted: Complete the unique The Corrupted strike.
  • The Depleted Weapon Core: Deliver the  Depleted Weapon Core to the Drifter.
  • Business As Usual: Win 10 Gambit matches and deposit 400 motes.
  • Lights Out: Defeat 25 Guardians then either kill 4 enemy Guardians in one invasion once, or have teammates defeat 4 Guardians in one invasion three times.
  • Dark Weapon Core: Give the Dark Weapon Core to the Drifter.

Get the Seething Heart

To start the whole thing off you’ll need to get the Seething Heart, which is only obtainable by killing the Ascendant Primeval Servitor boss in Gambit. Because Gambit bosses are randomized, you’ll need to play through matches until the Servitor shows up. Oh, and you need to win the match as well. Good luck!

City of Secrets

Once you have it the Seething Heart, head to the Drifter and hand it over. He’ll then set you on a quest to defeat 25 Taken bosses or minibosses in the Dreaming City. The Blind Well is a great opportunity to fill this quest as it spawns several Taken bosses in the ending phases. Remember, you need to deal them damage if you want them to count towards your total.

The Corrupted

With the bosses beaten you’ll be given a special version of The Corrupted strike. You can start it through the Dreaming City map, so hop to it and you’ll receive the Depleted Weapon Core item as a reward. Be aware that this strike can be tough, so bring a good team with you. Take it back to the Drifter to push to the next phase.

Business As Usual

This stage will have you heading back to Gambit. Grab yourself a strong Fireteam, because you need to win 10 Gambit matches then drop off 400 Motes. Any Motes you lose will doubly subtract from your total, so try to play as safely as possible, depositing them as soon as waves end.

Lights Out

It’s PvP times we’re afraid. For Lights Out you need to kill 25 Guardians in Gambit, or either kill four enemies during one invasion, or have teammates kill four enemies during invasions three times. Got a friend who’s good at shooting? Sign them up for this step.

Get Malfeasance

Once you complete the Lights Out quest step you’ll get the Dark Weapon Core item. Take it to the Drifter and he’ll exchange it for the Malfeasance, an exotic hand cannon with a perk that causes enemies to explode after you hit them with five shots. Nasty!
