Google Home Cast my audio not working

I've had my Google Home for over a year with no issues. However, in the last 2 weeks I've found that I can't cast to it, nor my Chromecast. Both devices appear in the Home app, and I've power cycled the Home and tried both of my WiFi networks. In the Home app, when I tap on the Google Home or Chromecast I'm presented with a screen that says that the device is unavailable. I can still issue voice commands to the Home and user the broadcast feature from my Pixel. I can also get the Home to play content on the Chromecast.

Anyone else experiencing issues? Could it be an app update problem?

EDIT [UPDATE]: I had already bounced my router after this problem started because of a firmware update, but bounced it again yesterday and that has seemingly resolved the issue (bonus: I can now see the the connected WiFi network on the Chromecast home screen).

No sound on Chromecast? Chromecast is undoubtedly one of the best digital media solutions out there. Developed by Google, Chromecast is a product of in-depth research of reputable tech professionals.

However, the video streaming device is not without its own faults.

Over 7 years of increased mass production, Chromecast consumers have lodged several complaints such as ‘no sound on Chromecast’, and ‘Chromecast sound but no picture’.

If you have been experiencing audio issues when using your Chromecast device, this guide is perfect for you.

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot your Chromecast player.

The first step to solving your Chromecast ‘no sound on TV’ issue is by narrowing the problem down to the digital media player.

With several devices connected to your television, any accessory can be the reason your TV is producing no sound when casting on Chromecast.

Check your external speakers and try using other devices to check if your TV would be audible.

Verify the sound output of the TV firstly by adjusting the volume using the remote control and secondly by connecting other media or gaming devices to the television.

If other devices are audible, then, your Chromecast is most likely the cause.

If you are using Bluetooth speakers, you may want to recheck the Bluetooth connection.

For speakers that are connected with cords, you should check if the cords are still operational and properly fitted into the TV and speaker(s).

Ensure the volume feature is enabled on the TV, as some modern systems can auto-disable this feature to offer home theater or enable other audio functions.

Go to the TV settings to verify or run a factory reset on the television to cancel the mute function.

Once you are certain the Chromecast is the source of the sound problem, you should troubleshoot using other methods.

1. Reset the Chromecast Device

You can either perform the soft factory setting or the hard factory setting. The former may solve the audio problem without data loss while the latter wipes off every user data stored on the Chromecast device.

The hard factory reset cannot be reversed; all data loss is permanent unless the user backed up the settings on cloud storage.

To reset the Chromecast, follow these steps:

  • Tap and hold the reset button at the back of the Chromecast
  • The LED light will begin to blink yellow for a few seconds
  • Check when the yellow light turns yellow
  • Stop holding the button and the Chromecast device will reset automatically

This method works for Chromecast with TV, but there are several other methods depending on the Chromecast generation and viewing device used.

For instance, 1st generation Chromebook, 2nd generation Chromebook, and 3rd generation Chromebook can be reset to factory settings using different ways.

Reset Chromebook (2nd & 3rd Gen)

To reset 2nd generation and 3rd generation Chromebook, access the Google Home app and follow these steps:

  • Click ‘Your Chromecast device
  • Then ‘Settings
  • At the upper right corner of your screen, tap ‘More
  • And click ‘Factory reset’

This method may not be work if you can no longer reach the network your Chromecast was set up on.

If you cannot access the original method, you can manually factory reset your Chromecast using the reset button at the side of your Chromecast.

Press and hold the button until it starts giving you a blinking orange light.

After some minutes, the LED colour will turn white. When that happens, release the reset button. The Chromecast will automatically initiate the reboot process.

The factory reset process is the same for 1st generation Chromebook, but the LED light gives you a blinking red light before turning white.

2. Check the Chromecast Power Supply

Any electric device can malfunction without a proper power supply and Chromecast is not an exception.

Ensure your Chromecast is well-connected to the power source.

Follow the sub-steps below to troubleshoot your Chromecast power source.

  • Attach the Chromecast to another HDMI jack below or above the current one and ensure it is well-fitted to the port.
  • You may want to use a recommended AC power adapter if the power problem persists.
  • Adjust the volume via your mobile app and Chromecast Settings

There are two ways in which you can adjust the volume of your Chromecast. You can use the volume slider in the mobile app, or remote control.

Also, you may have muted the Chromecast unconsciously while going through the app.

Verify if the slider is up on your mobile app. If not, adjust it to a suitable volume.

3. Reach out to Google Chromecast Support Team

If after applying all the steps given in this guide, your Chromecast remains inaudible, then, you may want to contact Google support, as such an issue may be a hardware fault instead of an OS error.

You can also get help from the Google Help Center or Community. Your warranty should get you a replacement if you are still within the grace period and you meet the terms and conditions for product return.

If the fault is a result of poor user maintenance or connection to an unapproved device, the warranty may not be valid. Check Chromecast warranty requirements for more.

How to Rectify Chromecast No Sound Error for a Particular Website

Google Home Cast my audio not working

The steps we have mentioned and explained are applicable to general audio problems related to Chromecast.

However, if you encounter such problems when using a particular streaming platform, there are ways to resolve that too. To verify if the sound error is local, try to use other streaming platforms.

If other streaming sites work fine, then, the issue is with that particular site.

Follow the steps below to rectify Chromecast no sound error for a particular streaming website:

Check the Site Settings

It is possible to disable sound from a specific streaming site with the aid of the site settings.

You may have disabled the sound feature while going through the site settings. Enable sound with these simple steps.

  • Tap the three vertical dots at the upper right corner of your browser window
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap on ‘Settings
  • Navigate from ‘settings’ to ‘site settings’ to ‘privacy and security’
  • Under ‘permissions’, scroll down and enable the ‘sound’ feature

Also, adding the particular website to your mute list can stop it from being audible.

While the sound is enabled for all streaming sites by default, users are allowed to put some sites under the mute list.

Cancel and Restart Chromecast Video Link

Refreshing the streaming site link can also do the magic. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot sound issues for specific sites.

Halt and restart the video you are watching via your mobile phone. You can also force the site to shut down by closing the site tab once.

Doing so reconnects the video in case of poor internet connection, refreshes the URL route of the streaming site or the show you are currently seeing.

For Chromecast users viewing the show directly from Chromebook, navigate to the extension option inside Chrome; and click the ‘cast the tab’ option on your Chromecast gadget.

Conclusion

No sound on Chromecast device can give serious headache and destroy your TV viewing experience completely.

We hope after reading this guide, you will be able to fix this issue without much effort.
