Reheating steak in the air fryer

Steak is one of those dishes that is traditionally not that great reheated the next day. Or so I believed, until I tried reheating steak in my air fryer.

As you probably know, reheating leftover steak in a microwave or oven, is going to lead to rubbery unappetizing steak. You can reheat it in your oven, but that takes a long time.

But… if you reheat leftover steak in an air fryer, it’ll come out perfectly in less time than it takes to heat up your oven.

Yes it will be a bit more well done than it was the first time you cooked it, but it will still be tasty and juicy (unlike the microwaved version).

Air frying is also a great way to cook steak, check out my recipes for air fryer steak and air fryer steak bites. If you have never tried it before, it is really quick and easy compared to shallow frying or grilling.

Ingredients

Leftover steak

You are going to get the best results with thick cut steak, and even better results if it was on the rare side originally. This is because the leftover steak will have time to warm through in the air fryer before getting completely overcooked.

Olive oil

A quick spray or a light brush of olive oil will help get the best results when reheating steak in an air fryer.

Tip

When choosing an olive oil spray for your air fryer, look for the type that spritzes rather than an aerosol. The propellant in aerosol oil sprays can damage the non-stick coating of your air fryer.

Directions

Reheating stek in your air fryer is very simple to do, but there are a couple of key steps to getting it just right:

  1. Remove leftover steak from the refrigerator and pat dry. It is best to get it out of the fridge around 20 minutes before reheating so it can start to com up to room temperature before reheating.
  2. Give the steak a light spray or brush with olive oil. Oil conducts heat, helping the steak to reheat quickly, and keeping it juicy.
  3. Preheat air fryer to 380°F/ 190°C for 2-3 minutes. This is important as you want the air fryer to be up to temperature as soon as you place the steak in to prevent it from becoming overcooked on the outside before the center is warmed.
  4. Place steak in the air fryer basket. If you are reheating more than one bit of steak then place them in a single layer. Space the steaks out so that they are not touching, this ensures that the hot air can reach all sides of the steak and reheat it evenly.
Note: If you will be reheating more than one batch of steaks in your air fryer, reheat leftover steaks that are a similar thickness together. Steak thickness is the main factor that affects how long steak takes to reheat, so this will help to prevent some steaks becoming overcooked before others have warmed through.
  5. Air fry leftover steak at 380°F/ 190°C for 2-3 minute intervals. After each interval, check the internal temperature, flip the steak over, and continue reheating until the steak reaches at least 110°F/ 43°C in the center of the thickest part.
  6. Top with garlic butter or your steak sauce of choice and enjoy!

Storage and (re)reheating

It is not recommended to reheat steak more than once, so only reheat what you are going to eat at one time.

If you did reheat too much steak then store it in the refrigerator in an air tight container for up to 2 days, and eat it cold for a snack, or slice it up and make a steak salad or steak sandwich.
