It is about 20 miles, both airports are just off Interstate 405, so an easy drive, though sometimes congested.
I would look into Shared Van service, the two main companies that are available LAX are Prime Time Shuttle and Super Shuttle. Just step outside your arriving terminal on the lower level and find the sign for Shared Van service. One should show up shortly.

Best and cheapest are not the same in this case. Best way is probably just to take a cab but it will be around $70. Shared Van shuttle as suggested above (see //www.primetimeshuttle.com and www.supershuttle.com) will be cheaper but the shared vans might not take you directly - they might detour to pick up or drop off other passengers and can circle LAX a few times when you arrive to try and fill the van.
The *cheapest* would be to use public transportation, , and would cost you about $4.25 - you'd have to take the free shuttle bus from the LAX terminals to the Aviation Blvd. station on the Metro Green Line. Take the Metro Green Line light rail train from there towards Norwalk. Exit at the Wilmington / Rosa Parks Station. Head downtstairs and take the Metro Blue Line from there towardsLong Beach. Exit at the Willow Station. From there take Long Beach Transit bus #102 towards Spring Town Center. Exit at Lakewood Blvd. and Spring St. Then walk north on Lakewould Blvd. and when you reach Douglas St., head west to the airport terminals (about 3/4 mile walk, total). Green and Blue lines (//www.metro.net) are $1.50 each, and the 102 bus is $1.25 (//www.lbtransit.com).
