Hi Henry, my favorite way home fromNew York to Sydney is via Dallas on Qantas. I like that it's the same flight number the whole way, the other alternative is via LA.

I always fly with Qantas via LAX. One stop in LAX direct from JFK then straight through to Sydney. I like to get the whole trip out of the way as fast as possible.
Dallas is another option, as Georgie mentions. I think you can also fly via San Francisco, but I'm not 100% sure.
You do know you'll lose two days flying in that direction? And you'll arrive back inNYC on the same day you depart Sydney on the way home, due to the time zones. Crazy stuff.
American Airlines is a partner with Qantas. I'd look into their flights as well as Qantas.

If you prefer Virgin, we flew Virgin America fromNewark to LA then LA to Syd on Virgin Aust. As it was on separate tickets, we left plenty of time (which we didn't need) between both flights.

I've done it and it's totally worth the time it takes to get there. I flew American Airlines from JFK to L.A. and then Qantas from L.A. to Sydney. Total travel time was about 23 hours including the layover.

I've flown United fromNewark to LA, Quantas from LA to Sydney. I've also connected in San Francisco so that's another option. One thing I can recommend doing once you're out over the Pacific and it's completely dark, assuming it's a clear moonless night: drape your blanket over your head to shut out the ambient cabin light and look out at the stars - a breathtaking display. Once you're far enough south and west you should be able to see the Southern Cross, which will let you know you truly aren't in Kansas anymore :-).

If you choose to go JFK LAX SYD then try to book the A380 with QANTAS. All planes are not equal and it's a very long trip.

I've flown BNE >NYC 4 times and Qantas via LAX is my preferred route. The second leg is always much quieter (less people), navigating through LAX is quite straightforward as it's just 3 planeloads of Australians at that time when the airport isn't so busy.

The newly renovated 747's are just as good as an A380 I find. I've always had one of the renovated 747s on the JFK / LAX / SYD route.

Another option is American from EWR to HNL (short stopover in Phoenix) then HNL to SYD on Qantas or Jetstar.
