The main objective in all of the games is to survive until 6 AM without being killed by the animatronics. The clock always starts at 12 AM, which is the beginning of the protagonist's night.

Physical Description

Although the clock is never physically seen, it serves as a part of the game's UI. It is located in the heads-up display on the upper right-hand corner of the screen, where it remains constantly, even when the player is being jumpscared by one of the animatronics (with the exception of running out of power in the first game and when wearing the Freddy Fazbear Head in the second game).

Usage

It displays how much time the player has until the night shift ends. Each shift lasts 12 AM to 6 AM. It also pairs up with what night the player is on, with Five Nights at Freddy's 4 being the only exception.

Once the clock reaches 6 AM, the night ends, and the player moves on to the next night.

In the first two games, it only displays the current hour; it does not show minutes, seconds, etc. However, this is not the case in the night completion screens in Five Nights at Freddy's 3, in which the clock shows a transition from 5:59 AM to 6:00 AM. In Five Nights at Freddy's 4, it changed into random numbers before reaching to 6:00. In the first three games, the night is shown below the clock during normal gameplay. In Five Nights at Freddy's 4, the clock is located where the night should be in the previous three games.

In the first five games, as well as Help Wanted, it merely shows what hour it is. However, exclusively in Ultimate Custom Night, it shows the exact time in real-world seconds.

In-game

The objective is to survive from 12 AM to 6 AM in order to complete the night.

In Five Nights at Freddy's, not every hour has the same duration. 12 AM lasts exactly 90 seconds (1:30 min) while 1 AM to 6 AM each last 89 seconds (1:29 min). So a full night duration is 8:55 min. Once 6 AM is reached, the screen fades to an animation of 5 AM rolling over to 6 AM accompanied by a bell-chime jingle and the sound of cheering kids.

In Five Nights at Freddy's 2, an hour is shortened to 68 seconds in length, so a night would be 6 minutes and 48 seconds long, meaning that the game without jumpscares and including night 6 is 40 minutes and 48 seconds.

In Five Nights at Freddy's 3, an hour is shortened even further to be 58 seconds long, making a night 5 minutes and 48 seconds long, meaning the game including nightmare takes 34 minutes and 48 seconds without jumpscares

In Five Nights at Freddy's 4, an hour is 60 seconds, making each night 6 minutes long, meaning the game without jumpscares takes 36 minutes.

In Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location, time doesn't move naturally throughout the main nights. However, on night 5 in the Private Room, an hour is approximately 90 seconds, resulting in the night taking approximately 9 minutes to complete. In night 6 of the game, officially known as the Custom Night, a single hour takes exactly 60 seconds to complete, resulting in the night lasting 6 minutes.

In Ultimate Custom Night, an hour is 45 seconds, so every run is 4 minutes and 30 seconds, making it have the shortest nights.

In the old Mobile versions, the nights were much shorter, but to counter this, in every game, the animatronics were more aggressive, and in the first game, the player loses power faster, the second game, flashlight battery drains faster, and there is possibly no change to the 3rd game.

In the newer remastered versions it is identical to the PC versions in nearly every way. The clocks are now the same and nights progress at the same time as on the PC version
