How Much Internal Storage Space Does Switch OLED Have?

As we said above, Switch OLED has 64GB of internal storage. This is a jump up from the regular Switch and Switch Lite, both of which have 32GB of onboard storage space.

HOWEVER, the console's operating system (OS) and associated files take up space, too. On the original console, 6.1GB of space is occupied before you even turn it on for the first time, leaving approximately 25.9GB of useable space to store your games, patch data, DLC items, photos and more.

Assuming that Switch OLED will have the same OS footprint as its Switch family siblings, that should leave approximately 57.9GB of useable space on a brand-spanking-new Switch OLED.

How Many Games Can You Store on Switch OLED?

Well, that totally depends on the size of the game. A whole load of small ones, a select bunch of mid-sized games, one or two massive games, or — more likely a mix. How long's a piece of string?

We can give you an idea, though. A game like Witcher 3, for example, is currently occupying 31.3GB on the Micro SD inside our regular Switch. This game and others like it (NBA 2K21, for instance, which weighs in at over 40GB) are so large that they wouldn't fit on the internal memory of a regular Switch or Switch Lite, but Switch OLED's expanded storage means that they will fit on the new console. Well, at least one of them will!

Of course, not all games are as chunky as the examples above. Here's a small list of a a dozen popular games currently sitting on our Switch and the amount of storage space they occupy:

GameApproximate Memory Space Taken Up On SwitchThe Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt31.3GBSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate (with Fighter's Pass 1)16.7GBResident Evil 412.0GBHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity11.3GBLuigi's Mansion 37.3GBAnimal Crossing: New Horizons7.1GBMario Kart 8 Deluxe6.8GBHades5.7GBSuper Mario Odyssey5.6GB51 Worldwide Games2.3GBDead Cells791MBAmong Us434MB

It's worth remembering that even if a game comes on a cartridge (and therefore won't take up space in internal console storage, updates and extra downloadable content for games can often be very large, and they will take up space on your console.

"Wow, no comments yet... why not be the first?"

Don't mind if I do!

I for one think it's cheap of Nintendo not to go with 128 gb. It's supposed to be a premium device.

Edit: so apparently I can't like my own comment ("So, erm, you can't like your own comments"). What kind of a man posts on the internet and don't even like his own comment?

Only microSD cards can be used on the Nintendo Switch console. Due to the slot size, SD cards and miniSD cards are not compatible with Nintendo Switch.

Are microSD cards included with the Nintendo Switch system?

No, microSD cards are sold separately.

Which microSD cards are supported?

The following types of microSD cards are supported on Nintendo Switch:

  • microSD (up to 2 GB)
  • microSDHC (4 GB - 32 GB)
  • microSDXC (64 GB and above)

Important:In order to use a microSDXC card on the Nintendo Switch console, a system update is required.

In order to improve your gameplay experience, using a microSD card with a higher transfer speed is recommended.

High-speed microSD card recommendations:

  • UHS-I (Ultra High Speed Phase I) compatible
  • Transfer speed 60 - 95 MB/sec (the higher the transfer speed, the better gameplay experience on Nintendo Switch)

What information can be saved to a microSD card on Nintendo Switch?

  • Downloadable software
  • Software update data
  • Downloadable content (DLC)
  • Screenshots and captured videos

Important: Game save data is stored to the System Memory and cannot be copied or saved to a microSD card.

Can I move data from the system memory to a microSD card?

Screenshots and captured gameplay videos can be moved from the system memory to a microSD card, and vice versa. You can also transfer downloadable software if the system is updated to Version 10.0.0 or higher.

  • When a microSD card is inserted in the console, it becomes the default save location for downloadable software.

Game save data cannot be copied to a microSD card.

Can I use multiple microSD cards with my system?

We recommend using a single microSD card with your Nintendo Switch console. If you run out of space, you can copy over all the data to a larger microSD card.

Is 64 GB good enough for Nintendo Switch?

If you're planning on downloading many games, you probably want a high-capacity card like a 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB microSD card. You'll be able to store more than enough games and they'll load faster since they're higher performance cards. For moderate use, a 32GB or 64GB microSD card will work.

How many games does 128GB hold on switch?

We'd recommend a 128GB SD card for most users; this will give you enough room for about 15-18 Nintendo Switch games on your console, but it's worth noting that smaller indie titles will take up far less space.

How much can a 64GB hold?

The average size of smartphone images shot in 12MP resolution works out to about 5.2MB. Using that figure, a 64GB SD card will be able to hold about 12,600 JPEG images. On a GoPro, which has an average file size of 4.3MB while shooting in 12MP, that number will be around 15,240 images.

How many GB is the average switch game?

The average Nintendo game comes in at around 8 GB. Some games will even require you to buy a MicroSD card. Just look out for the text on the game box or on the eShop.
