Mar 29, 2020 New guy searching for his first UTV. Generally speaking, when shopping for a used UTV such as a 900XP or maybe a Ranger 1000 type machine, is there a point where there are just too many miles to continue to consider it further? While searching on line, I see there obviously are a lot of machines of all years with all sorts of hours and miles on them, but is
there a limit when you just wouldn't consider a potential buy? For instance, I have found a 2017 1000XP at a favorable price but it has 1150 hours and 7900 miles. High for a 2017 but is there still a lot of life left in this unit? I imagine the manner it was used plays a big part...there can be hard miles and those not so hard. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Thank you in advance. Jayvee, I recently traded in a 2018 900 xp with almost 5000 miles on it. Lots of miles, to be sure. I had all the services done at proper intervals. I used this machine for everything from hauling dirt and firewood to trail riding. No abuse, but LOTS of use.
Upon trade-in, the dealer replaced some bushings and bearings in the back, but other wise that machine wasn’t hurt. A friend of mine actually bought it!! I’m not mechanically adept like a lot of guys on here, so I’m sure a single example won’t fully answer your question, but good machines, even high-mileage ones- ARE out there. Good luck!!!

Look at the machine. Look for excessive rust. See
if it has been greased. If you had a compression gauge. If
you don't know all of this. Replacing things , can get expensive fast. I saved money from side jobs for a few yrs.. Good luck dude.
What year is it.
Remember the older yrs , say even a 2011.
The motor is under the seat.
You get a lot of heat on you.
And it's a little harder to work on.
Torn boots. Look at the brake disc.
Look at the CV joints.
Who did the work..them or the dealership.
Does it crank easy.
Look at the ball joints.
Check the oil..
Is it full.
Is the oil clean.
Does everything work.
You have to also realize, if this machine runs much while its setting still..
The hours still add up.
What kind of riding did they do.
If they rode a lot of mud and water..
Replacing the cv joints and all is about every 6 months..
You could check the compression.
Ask if you can have the dealer to look at it.
Got the last 2019 made.
Put a good chunk of change down on it.
Pay 103.00 a month for a brand new machine.
I know what kind of shape it's in.
Go to dealerships.
See what kind of trade ins they have.
They can help you more than about anybody.

I had a project last summer, build a greenhouse, more like a garage but with a clear roof and patio doors all the way around it on the far end of the property. I had/have two 570 ACE's already that we use for all kinds of stuff. Anyway, while in the Polaris dealer I saw a 2017 900XP with 6700 miles on it for $9000.. Started to think about it,
really liked the 'turf mode' and that I could bring all my tools in every night.... Hmmmm.. An hour later I took it home. Then my guests started to come in and we did a little off road riding, I was more than impressed with how capable the Ranger is. The ACE's are definitely more fun, but the Ranger works as a SxS with room for a dog or two... Only put about 400 miles on it, replaced the drive belt, that's it so far! The salesman caught me looking at a new one the other day, and offered me what
I paid on trade for a new one, thinking hard about it.... I do like new stuff, but I have confidence the 17 would last me for a lot of years. I wouldn't be afraid of one with 5,000 mi on it.
