What Factors Influence the Price of Auto Window Tint?

When it comes to window tinting, there are a variety of factors which affect the price. Below we outline these different factors and explain why they can increase (or decrease) the cost of your window tint.

  • Vehicle type. Simply put, vehicles with less windows require less material—which means a lower price. Similarly, those vehicles with ‘easier’ windows will take less time and effort to install, which means less cost.
  • Unique vehicles. Some vehicles have unique aspects which increase the price of tint. A Tesla Model 3, for example, has a massive glass roof which adds a lot of time and material to the installation. Older vehicles can be more complex because there are no templates for them for a tint plotter and the tint for their windows must be hand-cut to size. That said, most shops won’t charge more, you will just have a longer appointment time.
  • Cost of tint removal. If previous tint, or other gunk or glue must be removed from your window, this adds time to the overall installation. Usually—if glue or gunk is minimal—shops will just remove it without charging you, but if the work will take a lot of time it can increase cost.
  • Tint material. The type of material used to make the window tint film itself affects price. Dyed window tint is cheaper than a carbon or ceramic window tint. But the benefits of the higher quality film are absolutely recognizable.
  • Installer experience. Installing window tint is an absolute art. If you don’t believe us, we challenge you to try and clean the inside of your back window. You’ll see what we mean. Now imagine doing that, but with a massive piece of tint that can’t touch anything otherwise it will get contaminated. Well, you get the point.
  • Overhead. A good tint shop has some overhead that your buddy will not. They use high-end equipment (lights, squeegees, knives, proper spray, torches, etc…) to get the job done right. They also will have a controlled environment which ensures minimal contaminations (dust, hair, dirt) affecting the finished product.
  • Brand of tint. You pay for what you get. The brand of window tint will absolutely affect price. For example, we use FormulaOne window tint. FormulaOne has the industry’s best warranty and ranks highest in terms of looks, durability, and performance. These quality window films can only be installed by certified tint shops. This certification is mandated by the manufacturer so they can ensure their tint always out-performs their competition.

Tinting a Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 has a massive back window that stretches up making it double as a panoramic sunroof. To properly tint this piece of glass, your shop needs the experience and the proper size of window tint to prevent seams. So if you’re going to tint the back window / roof it will add to the price.

Tinting a Model X

The windshield on a Tesla Model X is massive—so big in fact it’s not really even fair to call it a windshield. It’s really a panoramic glass roof. Tinting this roof (without a massive seam down the middle) requires an uncommon size roll of window tint. In fact, in our area, we’re the only shop that even carries the stuff.

Tinting a Model Y

Tinting the Tesla Model Y is handled differently because of the panoramic sunroof. More specifically, the headliner which spans the sunroof. The headliner needs to be removed safely in order to tint the entire roof without seams. Additionally, because of the drastic curves in the sunroof, relief cuts need to be made in the tint to help it properly shape to the contours of the glass. Most shops won’t even touch this type of project.
