I have a 13-inch 2020 MacBook Pro running macOS Big Sur (Version 11.1). I play The Sims 3 through Origin and the performance is very low. I am wondering: how do I allocate more memory to a specific application on macOS Big Sur? I figure that having more RAM designated to the game might boost performance.

Jan 18, 2021 3:43 PM in response to Racheyisabean RAM is automatically allocated. I think your best bet
is to open Activity Monitor, select the Memory tab and see if there are any applications you can shut down in order to free up memory. Another thing to check is swap. If you aren't using any swap, then lack of memory probably isn't the issue. In general, take a look at Activity Monitor while you're running Sims to verify what systems resources are being used.

Allocating Memory
You should not need to allot memory to a game. Your operating system will automatically allot memory as is needed. You may need to physically install more memory in your computer, however. What is the game you are trying to run, how much RAM do you have, and is your operating system 32-bit or 64-bit?
I'm trying to run Borderlands 2. I've added memory to my computer before too and I checked my remaining memory and it said I still have a spare 90 GB, my operating system is 64-bit, Core i5...
Not sure if you'll be able to figure out what's wrong, I tried to post the crash report, but it was over 18 000 characters long lol then I tried spliting it, but steam said there was an error... :/

Not your hard drive space please, your RAM.
Steam itself and most Steam games are 32-bit which cannot address more than about 3 GB plus your OS.
But it does sound like you are confusing memory (RAM) and storage (hard drive space) because 90 GB remaining RAM would be way more than most people have, but 90 GB storage may not be that much depending upon your file system because in some cases due to block size actual storage space used may be more than the sum of the actual data because even small files would occupy a block.

Not sure how to check my remaining memory, but I doubt anyone can help me so if anyone can I'll check. I do know for a fact I have memory still.

Not to be that guy, but the 4 GB limit on memory is OS dependent, not program related. As long as you are running a 64-bit OS, a 32-bit application can access more than 4 GB of total (V)RAM.
So doing some more research, it appears I was wrong. A 32-bit process will be limited to 2 GB of RAM on a 64-bit operating system, not counting VRAM.
And to show I should read the entire article before editing/posting, it appears developers can work around this, but by default they will be limited in how much RAM the 32-bit program can access.

Will depend on what
version of OS X you have. Version 10.9 or later:

Version 10.8 or earlier:

Okay so I have another 5.20/8 MB left... So memory isn't a problem. At this point I'm going to refund BL2 and try to find another BL game to play, if one even works...
I'm not trying to be funny, but if you only have 8 megabytes of memory left that's a serious problem. You would be at basically 100% memory usage.
Can you post a screenshot of activity monitor?

What GPU do you have and how much video memory does it have? Are you using onboard graphics? If so, that's your problem.
