How to charge Switch controllers while playing

A common problem that Nintendo Switch owners have is how to charge Switch Joy-Con controllers while playing. While it may seem reasonable to do the usual method of plugging the whole console into the dock, what if the player wants to charge Nintendo Switch controllers without the dock? What about even how to charge Joy-Cons without the Switch console itself, while still playing uninterrupted? Here’s how to do this.

How to charge Switch Joy-Cons while playing without the dock

How to charge Switch controllers while playing

The most common way to charge Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons while still playing a game is to remove the charge cable from the dock and plug that directly into the console, which will charge both the Switch and the Joy-Cons. The power cable can simply be removed from the dock by opening up the flap on the side and taking out the cable marked “AC Adaptor.” Plug this into a wall socket close by and the USB Type-C into the bottom of the Switch and everything will start charging, Joy-Cons included.

Of course, this only works if the player is using the Switch in handheld mode. If you want to charge their Joy-Cons while playing a game without the Switch itself, in full TV mode, then that’s a little trickier. In order to do this, you will have to purchase a separate Nintendo Joy-Con Charging Grip to make it work, since the grip included with the Switch doesn’t charge them and the Joy-Cons cannot be plugged in separately.

The Nintendo Switch world is hotting up ahead of E3 this month, with games such as Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4 rumored to be shown at Nintendo’s big Direct streaming conference on June 15. There are also rumors of a more powerful 4K Nintendo Switch Pro console being announced, so it’s a good time to be a Nintendo Switch fan.

How to charge a Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con controllers

Connect the controllers to the console

The easiest way to charge the Joy-Con controllers is to connect them to the Nintendo Switch console while the unit is connected to the AC power unit that comes with the console.

You can achieve this by resting the console in its dock when you're not using it (as pictured above) or by connecting the Switch to power directly when you will be using its built-in screen for play (as pictured below).

When plugged in and not in use, the Joy-Con controllers will take about three hours and a half to fully charge, and this charge should last for about 20 hours of use.

If you connect the controllers to a Switch console that is not plugged into power, the Joy-Cons will be charged to about half power or until the Switch's battery runs low, whichever happens first.

Connect the controllers to a charging grip

If you want to play on a TV and charge your Joy-Con controllers at the same time, you need to buy a charging grip separately.

Can you charge and play Switch at the same time?

There are two ways to charge a Nintendo Switch console, and both allow you to play while you're charging. When your Switch is in its dock, even if you're playing on the TV, the console will be charging via the power cable connected to the dock.

Do Switch controllers charge while playing handheld?

I tested this personally, and the most correct answer is: They charge up to about 50% and then stop. I let the JoyCons completely discharge until they would no longer function, then attached them to the console in handheld mode. As you can see in this picture, the JoyCons are indeed marked as charging.

Can you charge JoyCons while using them?

The JoyCons can also be charged right from the dock itself while they are inserted, or they can be charged separately by attaching them to a Nintendo Switch dock charger for charging (or directly to a power outlet). The battery can last for up to 30 hours – if you are playing only using the JoyCons.
