Although the security breach, which supposedly impacts 8.2 million U.S. users, didn't compromise information such as usernames, passwords, bank account information, or account access codes, you may still be considering deleting the app completely and using an alternative money transfer app. But before you go ahead and delete Cash App from your phone, there are some things you need to do first. Keep reading and we'll show you how to delete your Cash App account the right way.

How to delete your Cash App account

Because Cash App is linked to your bank account, you'll need to permanently delete your Cash App account before you remove the app from your phone. Before you do that though, you'll need to transfer any money in your Cash App account to your bank account.

Step 1: Open Cash App on your phone.

Step 2: Transfer any money in your Cash App account to your bank account by tapping the Banking icon in the bottom left corner (it looks like a house), then tapping Cash out. Note if you have bitcoin or stocks, these will need to be sold off before you can close your account.

Step 3: Now tap the Account icon (which looks like a person) in the top right corner, then scroll down to and tap Support.

It’s tempting to just drag and drop the app into the trash. But that doesn’t completely take care of your account. This only means you’ve removed an app from your phone.

If there’s still money in your account, transfer it to the banking institution already linked to your account. To do this, view your balance in the Cash App.

Underneath your balance, there will be two options. One is “Add Cash.” The other is “Cash Out.” Tap on “Cash Out” and choose how you want your money sent to you. 

Close the account 

Deleting your account is very easy if you have the app open. You won’t even need to log in! Once you’ve cashed out, tap the account menu icon. This will look like an avatar on any other social media site you’re familiar with. This brings up a full menu of options — tap “Support,” which is indicated by a question mark icon. This brings up a menu of options — tap “Something Else.” 

Next, tap “Account Settings” and you’re almost there. Tap “Close My Cash App Account.”

To prevent any mistakes, tap “Confirm Closing My Cash App Account.” Once these steps are complete, you should receive a confirmation. Depending on the contact information linked with your account, you should receive an email or a text confirmation.

Make sure you get the confirmation before you delete the app. You won’t want to re-download the app all over again.
