American Airlines policy when you miss the connection flight
6 years ago
Hi,
I depart from NYC with AA and have a connection flight from Miami airport to Antigua. I have just 50 minutes to get the flight at Miami airport. Both flights are with AA (economy class). Next flight from Miami to Antigua with AA is the day after.
The question is, would AA pay my hotel night in Miami if I miss the flight?

It is not likely that AA will pick up the hotel. It is you, who opted for the tight connection, and it's up to you to make it. Now, if incoming flight is delayed, basically for mechanical issues, things will differ.
Also, though there is another flight, the next day, it will depend on the availability of seats on that flight.
Good luck,

Hi
AA may or may not, it depends on the situation and also probably on the agent you happen to meet that night. So anyway, if this does happen that you miss the flight and they say you have to pay for it, at least ask them to help you out with getting a preferred rate from a hotel they usually deal with.

The connection sold (if under one ticket) is a valid connection. AA theoretically should give you a hotel night (though I have never done this with AA but a few times with other airlines). Make sure you ask.

I would never have booked an international flight with only 50min. before the flight.
I wonder if this ticket was bought directly from AA or from a 3rd party site??
I would expect that if everything is on time you could just walk quickly from one gate to the next one for your Antigua flight.
I would be surprised if AA paid for a hotel but it never hurts to ask.

If it's a legal connection booked on the same ticket, they will cover a hotel if it's their fault for the missed connection. However, if it's weather or a factor beyond their control, you're on your own.

If you booked through AA I would call them and ask for an earlier flight out of NYC. There has to be plenty.

The problem with all airlines is that often between the time you book and the time you actually fly, the airline changes it's schedule and what seemingly was a decent length connection now becomes a tight one. While from places like NYC there may be earlier flights, from smaller airports there may be only one flight that arrives early enough to make the connection. If the ticket was booked with a longer connection and that is shortened by the airline after the ticket was purchased, then the airline should, IMO, provide the hotel. If it was a short connection when you booked, then you may have to accept the responsibility for the short connection and subsequent hotel stay. As others have said, you'll just have to ask and see what happens but be prepared to pay the cost yourself.

If you miss the flight due to circumstances within their control they will provide hotel accommodation if an overnight stopover is required. However note in the text below "subject to availability". If they don't then book reasonable accommodation yourself (not a 5 star hotel), keep receipts and file a claim for the hotel and reasonable meals.
From American's contract of carriage - //www.aa.com/i18n/customer-service/support/conditions-of-carriage.jsp#delays
"Delays, cancellations and diversions
American Airlines will provide customers at the airport and onboard an affected aircraft with timely and frequent updates regarding known delays, cancellations and diversions and will strive to provide the best available information concerning the duration of delays and to the extent available, the flight's anticipated departure time.
We are not responsible for any special, incidental or consequential damages if we do not meet this commitment.
When cancellations and major delays are experienced, you will be rerouted on our next flight with available seats. If the delay or cancellation was caused by events within our control and we do not get you to your final destination on the expected arrival day, we will provide reasonable overnight accommodations, subject to availability."

It looks like you are on the first flight of the day from JFK so they are less likely to be delayed. If you want to remove the stress ask to be put on the last flight of the previous day and spend the night in an airport hotel.

Miami is an enormous and hugely busy airport. I'm not sure how close the gates will be, but it can take twenty mins just to get off the plane, even if it's bang on time, or you can wait that for a parking slot. Walking between gates can even take that, any of these things are not in the airlines control and you would be on your own,
I wouldn't be keen to do this connection and would be looking for an alternate option personally. Flight might be full the next day, and they don't kick people off for you, you need to wait for a flight with available seats.
