Before You Begin

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles uses an online service, called PayIt, that allows you to take advantage of completing multiple services in one secure transaction.

PayIt collects a $3 fee per online transaction that it uses to deliver quality services more efficiently with no upfront costs to NCDMV. The State of North Carolina does not collect or benefit from the transaction fee.

Is there a grace period for expired tags in N.C. 2022?

Although an individual can legally operate their vehicle up to 15 days after their registration expires ("valid through" date), the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicle charges a late fee up to $25 on all registration renewals paid after the license plate's expiration date.

What do I need to register my car in N.C. from out of state?

Titling & Registering a Vehicle.
Vehicle title (or if held by a lender, a registration card).
MVR-1 Title Application..
MVR-180 Odometer Disclosure (if vehicle is less than 10 years old).
A North Carolina driver license or a valid out-of-state driver license along with a North Carolina Temporary Driving Certificate..

How much does it cost to register a car in N.C. from out of state?

How much does it cost to register a vehicle? When you register your car, you will be required to pay a title fee, highway-use tax and plate fee. The fee for a new title is $56. The state highway-use tax is $3 of a vehicle's value, and won't exceed $250 for new residents.

Can I register my car in N.C. with an out of state license?

​General Requirements The individual who is titling the vehicle must have a valid North Carolina driver license or ID. For new North Carolina residents, a valid out-of-state driver license and their North Carolina Temporary Driving Certificate are required.
