A tale of Love and Ruin

Verified purchase

Every once and a while there are shows that come along that are nothing like you have ever seen before. Rage of Bahamut Virgin Soul has got me to love anime again because of it's beautiful down to earth atmosphere and bitter sweet story. It has this cinematic aspect that you just don't see in a lot of anime these days and you could tell that studio Mappa has put a lot of love into this show. The story has some great twists and turns through out it's run that keeps on surprising you.
I would have to say that the Characters is the main thing that really sells the show if you haven't already been sold on the gorgeous animation and character designs. Every character carries their own and there isn't a moment of boredom while they are on screen. Nina, our main character is a really great lead that just sticks out from the plethora of dull anime girls out there. From the very second she came on screen I fell in love with her bubbly personality and I'm not the one to really like those kind of characters, but Nina sold me. She is a layered character that hides pain with a smile and is more of an accurate portrayal of teenage girl when it comes to falling in love.To top it all off she is such a funny character with the best facial expressions I've seen on a character.
There is no true antagonist of the series and it's a four way conflict between the humans, gods, demons, and our main cast. The plot is mainly moved by one character, the king Charioce XVII who is the new of Anatae and starts out as the blatant villain of the show. However, the story shifts over to a morally grey area making us question if there is one antagonist to this story. I liked the king's role in the story and him being the main drive makes you question his every move. I would say that his character has the most surprises and isn't what you truly think he is in the beginning. The only problem that Virgin stands with it's audience is that since the king is the biggest player in the plot if you like his role the, show will be more enjoyable but if you don't then it will decline for you. I for one was sold the moment he came on screen.

Over all Virgin soul stands on it's own for a second season to the point that you don't really need to watch the first to get it. It has great animation, characters, and even comedy thrown in there that will give you a chuckle. To be warned even though Rage of Bahamut is a action/ adventure series, Virgin soul is a love story to it's very core that isn't like anything I've ever seen in anime. A love story about two characters on opposite sides and all the pain that comes with it. It's really bitter sweet and it has some really great moments with some of best dance animation I've seen in anime. It is marketed after all as a "Tale of Love and Pain" so if that isn't your thing be prepared or just don't bother. In the end this show had me in tears and begging for a third season.

Good, but not without faults. Season 3 maybe?

Verified purchase

I kind of feel out of place here with a 3/5 star review. So many people are praising this second season of Rage of Bahamut. Honestly though, I think this show would have been better off being 12-13 episodes like the first season. There were some episodes where the plot really dragged and it felt like they were stretching out events longer than they should be. The first season was super good in my opinion, so in short I was disappointed with Virgin Soul.

Animation is top notch and pretty consistent and I would say it is the strongest thing about this second season.

The characters are ok overall, but I don't really know how to feel about the protagonist Nina... She is likable, but I had a hard time believing her love for the king, who doesn't really show much interest in her other than it amuses him. Near the end it appears that he does care for her, but her willingness to keep loving him no matter what got a bit unbelievable. I really loved seeing a bunch of old characters again like Kaiser and Favaro. Honestly I think the show is stronger when Favaro is the main character. In short I think Virgin Soul felt like a very long side story and now hopefully we can get back to what the first season started. I really want to see a third season to wrap up his story and it looks like we may be getting that.

Hopefully we can get a season 3! Thanks for reading my review and have a nice day.

Great adventure. Great Romance. Great Bahamut!

Verified purchase

Aaaaaaah. When I saw the Bahamut series was 22 episodes into a second seasons, I decided to purchase Anime Strike. Just like Genesis, I was stunningly surprised that a story consisting of the stereotypical details of any fantasy adventure, MAPPA produced heartfelt characters, believable strife, and a gratifying ending (one that because of Season 1, I was not expecting at alllll). I was expecting the worse with a female main character, even though Genesis didn't (much) annoy me in the way of fanservice, but the show did me something better- it evened the fanservice out- which is all I can really ask for.

Another thing about this show, is that it was able to make me laugh through my tears. Just like Genesis and really just like any good show. It gets tiring being sad all the time and I get burnt out knowing that no one will be hurt or completely deserving of a shoddy fate, and Virgin Soul did it. I'm lucky to be able to binge because I wasn't ready to have my heart teetering on the edge all season like I did for the last two episodes.

Some cons. Uh... I'm not one to constantly think about something that is going to happen. I don't do much guessing- just hoping. But looking back on what had happened, some of the more observant viewers would be disappointed in some of the relationships and Ex Machinas that come into play. Also, if you're not familiar with the Bahamut stuff, you might be turned off by the ending. Other than thaaaat... Nothing! Loved it.

Here and There and should be considered an example of excellent anime within the entire history of the art form

Verified purchase

I think this anime deserves to be up there with the likes of Code Gaess or Samurai X Trust and Betrayal or Now and Then, Here and There and should be considered an example of excellent anime within the entire history of the art form. The animation is exceptional, transporting you into this other world with such refined detail. The action too is so detailed and fun to watch. This lets you believe the fantasy world to be real in a sense, and lets you care deeply for the characters in it. Each character is built up in a balanced way, not too much or little, but enough for your to in the end care deeply about each one and really hurt with them. The storyline is thrilling, and leaves you guessing with each episode, needing more and more of it. And the best thing of all could be the strong female lead role. The only thing I didn't prefer is the way Bahamut was portrayed at the end causing so much havoc. The spread of his fire balls was unrealistic to me, but I will forgive that one minute of the show, for hundreds of minutes of a wonderful adventure.

Story makes no sense but the animation I really enjoyed.

Verified purchase

I thought the animation was great the story was good except it made no sense. It was kind of like if only we let Hitler live longer we might have a cure for pediatric AIDS. It just did not make any logical sense. If the goal was to destroy a common enemy why would you begin making everyone your enemy? The mass genocidal acts seem really out of place by the end of the series. We mass murdered so we could kill a monster. You mass murdered because the link tied these two groups to the monster. No. We killed all of those allies and enemies for no apparent reason. Animation was great. The voice actors we exceptional. Story still boggles my mind.

Complex story but with great animation...a must watch!

Verified purchase

Wow! This series is really well done. The characters have so much personality and the emotions and drama are intense. It was difficult to get past the violence at times. However the story was very interesting and made you really feel for the characters as they were going through all these trials. I wasn't sure what to think of the king since he started as the villain but later we found out he had a purpose. The relationship between Nina and the king was hot and cold but ultimately their feelings came through in the end even though they could no longer see or hear each other. Losing Ei was a blow to me because he was just starting to get his emotions in check from being deceived by the angels. This story was very complex but the themes were relatable. I just wished for more of a happy ending. I would definitely own this if it came to video.

Is there a season 3 ?

Verified purchase

I watched this on Anime Strike, it only had season one with 24 episodes. Not sure what other reviewers are referring to season 2. I searched Amazon video and there seems to be 12 episodes (for PURCHASE, $3 x 12 = $36 !!!) that relate to a time previous to the season The last episode of what I watched on Anime Strike seemed to imply that Bahamut was not dead, so some kind of opening for more episodes ?
I watch these late at night so I need sound character, positive belief in people's character, and good story line development, not dark/depressing, Positive aspects of humanity must be in anything I watch late at night. There may be tragedies along the way but the story line drops hints along the way that it isn't totally a depressing plot. In comparison I stopped watching Death Note because it was depressing, offered no future hope, kill people on a whim.

A fan now!

I was thoroughly impressed with this series! I watched it really not knowing what to expect. One might think that an anime that throws in demons, angels, humans, dragons, and zombies all together might be pushing it. But this storyline was very well executed. Something I appreciated about this show is that you get a pretty good feel for the many different characters. Do not be surprised if you find yourself growing found of all of the characters despite all the conflicts existing among them. Nina is someone who really does grow on you - just as she does with the other characters in the show. Her optimism and enthusiasm for life are contagious! Although Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul is technically a continuation of Rage of Bahamut: Genesis, it can be watched without having seen Genesis. I have actually just started watching Genesis for the first time myself ;)
