Equipment & Magic / Weapons
+
Greatswords are a type of Weapon in Elden Ring. Greatswords are capable of inflicting a massive amounts of damage, but sacrifice mobility, making the player vulnerable and open to enemy and boss attacks if they are not careful. High risk, high reward is the name of the game with these Weapons, but they can pancake many enemies, allowing you to finish them off unscathed.
Greatswords can make use of most Ashes of War, so you should experiment with different ones and see what you like.
Note: Since Patch 1.06, the time required to roll after performing an attack has been reduced, the motion speed of strong attack and charge attack has been increased and the motion speed of Guard Counter has been increased.

After some number crunching with the Wretch as my class, and 80 STR. The top 3 greatswords w/ the Heavy infusion + one-handed are:
1. Iron Greatsword w/ 724 AR
2. Gargoyles Greatsword w/ 722 AR
3. Banished Knight’s Greatsword w/ 703 AR
Personally I’d go with the Banished Knight’s mainly due to the alternative 2 handed moveset and being only 10 units of weight. Plus I enjoy the design of the sword.ReplyReplies (0)

After many many hours of dueling with various Greatswords I came to the conclusion that the Claymore is the most viable hands down in PvP.
Having a Thrust attack is just too important to have, almost feels necessary to be competitive.ReplyReplies (0)

Well I was using implaing thrust/giant hunt and piercing fang to have a thrust attack and since the last patch they feel even more great. I think knights gs with impaling thrust feel seemless when you do R1 R1 L2. Yeah Claymore is cool but id much rather have the remnants of hollowslayer than a pokey scottish boi

It is very sad that none of the greatswords besides claymore have thrust attacks of any kind. If it's a sword, it's pointy. If it's pointy, you poke with it. As it stands now, they're decent, but it would've been awesome to have a more competent moveset on them.

What kinda weapons do you guys want from up coming DLCs? A "Fullmoon Greatsword" to mirror Ranni's Dark moon greatsword would be so cool. Also I would love to see a Carian Greatsword in material. Carian Knight Sword is a straight sword while troll knight sword looks like a straight sword for trolls, so a material version of the Carian sword spells would be my wish, especially if it has the banished knights gs moveset

We keep whining about the movesets etc but what can we actually do about it? How can I as a person ask Fromsoft why square off isn't possible to put on greatswords? Can we make them change square off to be able to put on greatswords if enough people talks about it on Twitter or writes e mails to bandai? Is there a solution to this inane problem?

Yes only Claymore has thrusts but that doesn't mean other swords should have the same moveset.
From the DLC I want; two greatsword with the heavy attacks of Black Knight Sword and/or Artorias GS and two more with the same r1s as banished/ knight's greatsword but with a thrust and an upward slash follow up instead, same as hollowslayer.ReplyReplies (1)

The sheaths do clip through some armors, however they also add another layer of fashion. Have nothing in your left hand, then switch to it. Your character will sheath their sword while "power stancing" their fists. Very cool for screenshots and being summoned for co-op. Remove capes for maximum bling.

Incredibly strong weapon class. Move sets are varied and with the (banished) knight's greatsword, elegant as well. One small thing I'd add to them is maybe a thrust r2 single handed so they can take advantage of the pierce weapon type many of them have.
Additionally, stance (renamed square off and locked to straight swords) would be super dope on this weapon class. Honestly, I can't imagine why it's missing, but I can see it being readded through DLC in the future.ReplyReplies (1)

Some of y'alls logic of "no pokes =Literally unusable" is really nitpicky and silly, I do agree that it would be nice if there was a bit more moveset variety to them, but they aren't hot garbage just because not all of them can poke, that's just a really petty reason to shittalk a perfectly good weapon class.

Regular moveset is actually really good. They should remove the Clank sound at it would be somewhat realistic even. If all of them had some sort of running poke or poke on a one handed moveset they'd be perfect. One of those rolling/running overhead slashes for example.

If a DLC introduces a greatsword with the unique elegant banished knight sword's (and knight's greatsword) R1s and also has Claymore pokes, i think that would be something i could really simp for. (unless it looked like **** and/or had a lame weapon art)

I'm not too hard to impress, i see above average sword and go hee-hee, but i do wish more of these got pokes (sucks that the claymore is the only one) and the unique r1s that the Knight's Greatsword, Banished Knight's Greatsword, and Inseparable Sword use, its no deal breaker (unless you are extremely nit-picky) but still, more variety would be great.

Greatswords should be more like longswords with some faster thrusting combos. Right now these are like miniature colossal swords which makes them suck when compared to katanas. They swing from side to side with barely any range.

Used to be my favourite class in DS3. So many unique weapons. In ER they are good but lack variety, most of them are nearly identical apart from scaling, especially on non-int or -fth builds. Hopefully DLCs will add some spicier greatswords

I get why some people don't like swinging the sword into the ground but for me it honestly makes it sound like It hits harder. Like if I'm using more force in the swing. The animations fits well to certain swords that look clunky like the Marai's Executioners and the one-hand animation is even more caveman.

I wish there was a way to sheathe your swords without two handing the the off-hand slot. Also, I wish the sheath were similarly placed to how the straight swords are. I know they are on the longer side but they can be placed at an angle that makes them not clip on even ground.

Greatswords have been neutered in this game compared to ds3 thanks to the shitty hyperarmor system that can actually REDUCE poise when you are over 60 poise and the fact that all the non unique greatswords except one have sweeping r2's. the sweep is a good attack but there needs to be more variety in the movesets.
A few fixes would first of all be to fix the god awful hyperarmor system then update the moveset of some of the weapons
Give the lordsworn, knight's, flamberge, death's poker, and sacred relic sword poke r2's and rolling/crouching attacks
Give claymore and Ordovis's greastword a poking running r2
Finally edit the scaling of the Golden Order GS, Death's Poker, and Helphen Steeple so that they scale INT FTH to improve underpowered INT FTH BuildsReplyReplies (1)

I hate the slam down rolling attack and the r2’s most these get. Too bad they didn’t make a new rolling poke that’s faster. Kind of like the straight swords poke and can combo into a super fight lighy attack that looks very good and fluid. They should really add more unique r2’s and rolling attacks for these. I liked the claymores running light attack more than this running heavy. Feels slower. Just not picking here. Two handed straight swords are one of the best movesets in the game imo. Similar heavy though for most those besides the miquellan knight sword which gets the best heavy/charged heavy attack in the game.

If they dont do this but put new greatswords with better movesets to the DLC they will basically power creep half of the weapon class and elden ring will become one of the worst from games to pvp with. With all the L2 spam it already is but they can still change that I believe.ReplyReplies (1)

The Greatswords need a huge buff, especially in a PvP setting where quick status effect weapons are meta. Just having the Square Off AoW would make this entire class of weapons significantly better. Look at the dual wielding Banished Knights: if we had access to his dual wielding moveset, the class could compete with any of the other weapons, including the blood Katana builds. I'm not even referring to the Oleg exclusive AoW where he spams the helicopter, but in a game where Corpse Plier/Bloodblade Dance/Waterfowl Dance exist, having access to that AoW wouldn't even be out of place.

It depends.
If you are dual wielding, it's easily the Iron Greatsword. Just use AoW/spells that buff both weapons, like Sacred Order/Golden Vow/Flame, Grant Me Strength.
If you're two handing and are at RL150 or above, a Quality Banished Knight Greatsword is best. 54 Strength/80 Dex/40-60 Vigor/20-25 Endurance are ideal numbers. Just rebirth, use the Radagon Soreseal, and use 5 less points than you need in Vigor, Endurance, Strength, and Dex.ReplyReplies (0)

A lot of people seem to have a lot of gripes about the movesets and poise of these weapons. I've been using double banished knight greatswords and I've been having an awesome time. The jumping L1 attack is awesome and I easily stagger the majority of enemies I fight. I two-hand the greatsword for a faster, longer-ranged moveset. I think thats where this class really shines, the ability to easily and quickly stagger enemies at a good distance, whilst dishing out some impressive damage. Just make sure you space youself out, and your enemies won't stand a chance. And of course the sweeping R2 is good for clearing a crowd or breaking the poise of mightier foes.

This class is gimped by the shitty way the hyperarmor works for it. instead of just adding 30 poise when swung, it divides your passive poise by 2 then adds 30. This means above 60 poise you have LESS poise while swinging your sword. They NEED to change it, it ruins the weapon class.

These are my findings for the highest Attack Power for the HEAVY Greatswords (99 Strength):
Sword 1-Hand (2-Hand)
Iron 749 (812) - Best for dual wielding
Gargoyle 748 (816) - Best two hand damage
Banished 726 (785) - Best two hand move set with damage
Bastard 720 (783) - Best attack/weight ratio
Claymore 705 (762) - Best for thrusting
Knight 686 (740) - Best two hand move set with furthest reach
They ruined the Knight's GS by making it dexterity based even though it has a a higher minimum strength requirement. Bastard should be buffed with a R2 thrust and move set from from the two Knight swords. It's the lightest and shortest sword in it's category so it would benefit from faster swings. Otherwise, the attack power of these swords are mostly based off weight.ReplyReplies (1)

Not a programmer or anything, but how hard is it to add some variety to the movesets? There's like 20 Greatswords and only some of them have unique attacks without power stancing like Claymore's pokes (1H R2, 2H R2, 2H crouch, 2H rolling) and copy-pasted Mirrah/Hollow-Slayer 2H light attacks on Banished Knight Greatsword and Knight's Greatsword. They couldn't have given the pokes and other GS attacks from the previous games like DS3 Black Knight Sword's rushing 2H heavy upper cut attack and Loyce's Greatsword? I just want the complete Mirrah/hollowslayer package and that includes pokes.
Weapons like colossal weapons also lost their vertical attacks and no sick black knight grinding uppercut heavy attack. Disappointed.ReplyReplies (2)

There's a bug when 2-handing greatswords, to where you can't sprint attack for some time after jumping/landing. It really hampers using jumping as a feint in pvp. Tested with Claymore, Lordsworn, and Gargoyle's, but I'm going to assume it's the same for all of them. Hoping to get this fixed like the rolling rapier bug

There should be two animations for greatswords and some colossal greatswords, the "ungabunga" caveman animation when you're at or below the weapons requirements, and a faster or more skillful flowing animation when you are well beyond the weapons requirement.
Ex, The Claymores req are 16S/13D
At 16S/13D you would swing use it like a crude caveman
At 32S/26D you would wield it like a competent swordsmanReplyReplies (0)

Wish they didn’t attack so slow. Compared to DS3 these weapons not only have too low of damage, but also attack way too slow. The removal of individual attacks having poise for the old poise system also basically nerfed these weapons. Unless you’re using super high poise armor, you’re not gonna trade with most faster weapons.
