200,000 people marched Winter Castle and presented Tsar with petition for freedom of speech, better working conditions etc. Thousands killed.

No right like free speech or trade unions, the lower class of Russia was treated horrendously. The revolutionaries offered the lower class things the Tsar wouldn't
Cause 2 - Disaster of WW1
Trouble on
the War front
- Announced August 1914
- Tsar changed St Petersburg to Petrograd, believed "too German"
- Large numbers meant soldier were ill-equipped & disorganized
- Russian General stated "In several infantry regiments, at least 1/3 of our men had no rifles.
- Losing war drastically, Tsar refused to end it

- Massive shortages, women couldn't feed families or buy fuel to heat their homes
Why did WW1 contribute to the 1917 Revolution?
Russia becoming more & more unstable, Tsar proving himself unfit to run the country, losing Russia's faith in him as their leader.

- Tsar's incompetence as a leader was the biggest cause of the Russian revolution
- ill-treatment of peasants and workers forced the poorer classes of Russia to support revolutionary parties promising for better treatment

Cause 3 - Provisional Gouvernment:
Lead by Alexander Kerensky
- Russian's happy at first
- reforms such as freedom of speech, could form labor unions
- didn't answer the real problems such as food, fuel & poor working conditions
- Refused to end war, soldiers refused to fight
- "Peace, Bread, Land"
increasing Soviet power
- Hired Kornilov, undermined Kerensky's leadership
- More Russian's backing Soviets

The Russian Revolution -
October 1917
- After gaining massive support from the people of Russia, the Petrograd Soviet believed it was time to take control.
- They took over
the main centers of Petrograd in the night and the Winter Palace in the morning.
- Lead by Trotsky and Lenin, the communist government was now in rule over Russia, they became the USSR.
