How Many Pages Are In Each Harry Potter Book?

Again, the answer to this question is dependent on which version of the book you read. For example, each book’s UK and US versions may not have matching page counts. Additionally, whether you’re reading them in hardback, paperback, or e-book format will also make a difference.

For this list, I’ve used the page counts for the first version that appears for each book when you search for it on Goodreads.

Here is a list of all of the Harry Potter books and their corresponding number of pages:

  • Harry Potter the Prequel – 4 pages
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone – 309 pages
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – 341 pages
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – 435 pages
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – 734 pages
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – 870 pages
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – 652 pages
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – 759 pages
  • Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – 343 pages
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – 128 pages
  • The Tales of Beedle the Bard – 109 pages
  • Quidditch Through the Ages – 105 pages
  • Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide – 79 pages

Seeing as how there are over 100 editions of some of these books, though, don’t be surprised if you find a different page count for a few of them.

WordCounter goes even further, breaking the books down into their respective word counts. Examining the books in that fashion gives you the following results:

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone – 76,944 words
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – 85,141 words
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – 107,253 words
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – 190,637 words
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – 257,045 words
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – 168,923 words
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – 198,227 words

That’s a grand total of 1,084,170 words – over a million words! – without including the spin-offs. Crazy, right?! The following section will examine how long it takes an everyday reader to read that many words.

What Is the Longest Harry Potter Book?

The longest Harry Potter book of all the books (both the original series and the spin-offs) is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, with 870 pages in the American hardback edition. The UK version has 766 pages.

According to ReadingLength.com, it would take the average reader reading 250 words per minute 15 hours and 12 minutes to read the entire book.

The average reading times for the other six original Harry Potter books are as follows:

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone – 5 hours and 32 minutes

How Many Harry Potter Movies Are There?

There are eight original Harry Potter movies starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and the other actors and actresses, many of whom are now household names. There is one more movie than books because the filmmakers split the final film into two parts.

There are additional movies in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them spin-off series.

As of 2022, two of the Fantastic Beasts movies have been released:

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  • Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is set for release in 2022, and according to this article from Distractify, J.K. Rowling plans to have five total films in the franchise.

How Long Does It Take to Watch the Harry Potter Movies?

The following information comes directly from everyone’s favorite virtual assistant – Amazon Alexa:

It takes 19 hours and 39 minutes (ask your Alexa directly, and she’ll say 19 hours and 40 minutes) to watch all seven of the Harry Potter movies back to back. And that’s if you could somehow watch them without stopping for snack and potty breaks, to change the movies, or to sleep.

That’s why most people break the movies into week-long (or longer) movie marathons. In my family, we incorporate them into our Christmas tradition. We watch them every year over our Christmas break, as that’s the only time we are all off work and out of school together at the same time.

However you choose to watch the Harry Potter movies – or read the Harry Potter books – make sure that you carve out a significant chunk of time to do it because it isn’t something you can easily accomplish in a single sitting.

Final Thoughts

There are only seven books considered genuine “Harry Potter” books. The rest are spin-offs, short stories, etc. It seems like that should make it easy to pinpoint precisely how many pages are in the series.

Still, thanks to each book coming in multiple editions in both the UK and the US – as well as plenty of other countries around the world – it’s not as easy of an answer as most people might think.
