Which of the following molecular movements is due to diffusion or osmosis?

When a plant cell is placed in concentrated salt water, water moves out of the cell.

Which statement is correct?

The contents of a red blood cell are hypertonic to distilled water.

Select the correct statement about osmosis.

Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane.

Based on the figure given below, which of these experimental treatments would increase the rate of sucrose transport into the cell?

decreasing extracellular pH

Phosphorylation cascades involving a series of protein kinases are useful for cellular signal transduction because __________.

they amplify the original signal manyfold

Lipid-soluble signaling molecules, such as testosterone, cross the membranes of all cells but affect only target cells because __________.

intracellular receptors are present only in target cells

In what way do the membranes of a eukaryotic cell vary?

Certain proteins are unique to each kind of membrane.

The difference between pinocytosis and receptor-mediated endocytosis is that

pinocytosis is nonselective in the molecules it brings into the cell, whereas receptor-mediated endocytosis offers more selectivity.

What is the movement of molecules in osmosis?

Osmosis And Diffusion Definitions Osmosis: Osmosis is the movement of solvent particles across a semipermeable membrane from a dilute solution into a concentrated solution. The solvent moves to dilute the concentrated solution and equalize the concentration on both sides of the membrane.

What type of molecular transport is osmosis?

Osmosis is a form of passive transport when water molecules move from low solute concentration(high water concentration) to high solute or low water concentration across a membrane that is not permeable to the solute. There is a form of passive transport called facilitated diffusion.

What type of movement is diffusion?

Diffusion is the net movement of substances from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. This movement occurs as a result of the random and constant motion characteristic of all molecules, atoms, or ions (due to kinetic energy) and is independent from the motion of other molecules.
