An unknown or changeable quantity is a variable. We use variables when we don't know what a certain amount is, and they're usually referred to as "x," or "y."
For example, if I had a problem where I needed apples, had $15, and knew that each apple was $1.50, I would use a variable to see how many apples I could buy (because right now that's an unknown number). I could solve it by writing 1.50x =15 to find my answer (which is x =10).
