Who is Camila Cabello married to

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes started out as good friends, then became one of pop music’s most talked-about couples. Things really started heating up between the collaborators in July 2019, but Shawnmila was over by November 2021.

What happened and how did we get here? Here’s a complete timeline of Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes’s relationship.

July 2014

Cabello (as a member of Fifth Harmony) and Mendes meet while they are both opening acts for Austin Mahone’s tour. The singers discussed that time with V Magazine. “I remember thinking we met on the Austin Mahone tour, and I remember I wanted to hang out with you, but you were always on the tour bus, just learning guitar,” Cabello said. Mendes replied, “Yeah, that was me. I didn’t talk to anybody. You were the only person that talked to me. Like, you were the only one of everybody on that tour who would say words to me. Actually, I think if we go into our DMs or something, there’s a photo from the day we met, I think.

“And I thought you were out of your mind,” he continued. “I’d be in my bus where no one could see me. I’d be looking through the window and I’d see you, like, flying around on a scooter and jumping and doing cartwheels. I’d be like, She’s insane. Close the window and go to sleep.”

April 2015

Mendes plays a game of “Lips, Wife, or Leave It” and opts for Cabello as the “wife” over Chloë Grace Moretz and Jade Thirwall from Little Mix. “Yeah, she rocks,” he said.

Also that month, Cabello talks about falling in love and writing music in a new interview—though she doesn’t specifically mention Mendes in that context. “Falling in love is like an infinite amount of levels and layers and angles,” she said. “I fell in love and just opened up. Everything was written in present moment.”

The reported couple wrapped up the month with a very sexy performance of “Señorita” at the VMAs. Even Taylor Swift was shook.

September 2019

Mendes finally confirms that he’s in a relationship. “Honestly, I wanna say I wanna talk to you guys about this stuff, but it’s not just me in the relationship,” he said when asked about whether he’s ever been in love. “There’s another person involved, and I can’t say things that I feel. It’s not just me deciding, you know?”

That same month, Cabello gives another interview to Elle about Mendes: “People can say whatever they want to say. They can speculate, but at the same time, we are going to live our own lives, enjoy it, and fall for each other like nobody is watching. That is how I want to live. I never want to open the door for people to feel like they are involved. Like I said, I want it to be mine and [his]. That’s why I’m so tight-lipped about it: because I want to protect it.”

On September 12, the couple posts an Instagram video of themselves making out, well, sort of. “So we saw, like on Twitter and stuff, you guys saying stuff about how we were kissing and that it looks weird, that we kiss like fish…and we just want to show you how we really kiss,” Mendes says. Cabello adds, “It really hurt our feelings.”

Then they proceed to jokingly kiss and lick each other’s faces in a bit of self-parody. See for yourself below.

On September 19, a TMZ camera crew caught Mendes walking through the terminal at LAX, where he told them the couple’s relationship is “definitely not a publicity stunt.”

He also confirmed that he’s met his girlfriend’s parents. “Camila’s parents? I’ve known them a long time,” he said.

On September 27 a fan asked Mendes a very poignant question about his love life during a pre-concert Q&A: “Have you ever loved someone who didn’t love you and what would you do?”

His response? “If I told you the whole story of Camila, it would take a long time. I would say that you have to fight for someone you really love. And if you really, truly love them, then you’ll get them. It just takes time.”

But it looks like the singer’s patience definitely paid off.

October 2019

In an interview with the U.K.’s Capital Breakfast radio show on October 3, Cabello gives what might be her most public declaration of love yet—literally, she publicly declares her love for him. “We’re pretty happy,” she said after the host brought up her relationship with Mendes. “I really, really love him a lot.”

In an interview with Britain’s The Sun, Cabello opens up about why getting into a relationship with Mendes was risky due to their preexisting friendship. “It’s almost more scary because you have more to lose,” she said. “When you first start dating a person and you know nothing about them, there’s less at risk there. I think when you fall in love with somebody you’ve known for a long time, there’s more at stake. But it also feels more special because it feels like the love story you see in the movies of people who have known each other for a long time but been too stupid to realize it or say it and then it happens—and that’s beautiful too.”

But even back when they first met, she now says there was a spark. “Definitely there were feelings, but I think we were just too young to know what to do with them,” Cabello said.

During a concert in Australia, Mendes reveals that he and Cabello haven’t been dating “that long.” He told fans, “We have been dating since July 4th officially,” per People.

November 2019

On November 11, the couple sits courtside at an NBA game between the L.A. Clippers and the Toronto Raptors—and are not afraid to show their affection for each other.

On November 18, Rolling Stone published an interview with Cabello, who can’t stop gushing about her man. Though she does admit that things were just a little bit awkward in the beginning stages of their epic romance.

While collaborating on the hit “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” Cabello says, she “really bonded with him as more than a friend.” She added, “I think he did too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don’t think we knew what to do with those feelings. It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren’t together. It was just weird.” According to Cabello, there was a definite energy between the pair right from the start, but “after that song, we didn’t spend as much time together.” Luckily, they reconnected thanks to the song “Señorita.”

“Our paths just didn’t cross in that way romantically until we started hanging out again and writing. For me, it just brought it back,” the singer explained.

On November 26, Cabello chatted with BBC Radio 1’s Greg James and responded to everyone criticizing her PDA with Mendes—particularly when she and her beau posted a make-out video to Instagram. When a fan called in with an “unpopular opinion” claiming “public displays of affection on Instagram are too much,” the 22-year-old took it personally, according to Us Weekly.

“Ouch. Well, I feel personally targeted. I feel personally attacked,” Cabello said, adding sarcastically, “Yeah, PDA is terrible. Kissing in public? I don’t even….”

The “Liar” singer went on to defend her actions with Mendes, saying that living her life in the public eye—and repeatedly being targeted by paparazzi—has made her care less about sharing her intimate moments on social media.

“You honestly get kind of desensitized to it. You’re like, ‘Well, might as well just make out on Instagram!’” she said. We’re not complaining, Camila.

December 2019

On December 5, Cabello finally shares the real reason she and Mendes don’t kiss on stage during their steamy “Señorita” performances.

“I actually just get shy, weirdly,” she told Extra. “I feel like I would kiss him in the dress rehearsal, but then we are onstage and then something stops me.”

Then, during an interview on Ellen, Cabello admitted she and Mendes were “babies” about their feelings toward each other. In fact, she said she had a “crush” on the Canadian crooner years before the two made things official.

“I for sure had a crush…. We were stupid. I think we both had a crush, but were being babies about it,” she said. “But we’re grown now! But I definitely, definitely, definitely had a crush.”

The 22-year-old pop star also stopped by The Tonight Show where she told Jimmy Fallon how difficult it was for her to call her boyfriend “baby” during their friendship-to-romance transition.

She explained, “It took me, like, two months to be able to call him ‘baby.’ I didn't want to say his name because we were dating and I couldn’t say ‘baby,’ so I’d just be like, ‘Hey! You! Hand me that water over there?’

“It’s so funny because when we first started going out, it’s so weird…[dating] somebody who was your friend for a really long time,” Cabello added. “The people around you already know them because you’ve known them for a long time, so it’s just like, ‘Now we kiss and hold hands.’”

March 2020

Cabello and Mendes spend the early months of the coronavirus pandemic quarantining together. They take many, many walks and also hopped onto Instagram Live to answer questions from fans and perform some music.

October 2020

In the trailer for his Netflix documentary Wonder (coming out November 23), Mendes reveals that all his songs are about Cabello. “My song comes on the radio or something, and I’m like, ‘Everything’s about you. They’re all, they have always been about you,’” he says. “She goes, ‘What do you mean?’ Like, ‘They’re all about you. Like every song I’ve ever wrote.’”

  • Mendes doesn’t think he’ll be able do their relationship “justice” in a song. “I don’t think I’ll be able to write songs that really do it justice, that can really capture the things and the feelings with her,” Mendes said, per Elle. “I think it’s like when you see a moon or stars and you try to take a photo of it with your iPhone, and then you just can’t, it just doesn’t look good. And you’re like, ‘It’s not supposed to be captured.’ You know? It’s just supposed to be for us.”
  • They shared a sweet moment before that steamy VMAs performance. During rehearsal, the documentary shows them kissing. “I love you,” Cabello tells Mendes. “Do you know that?”  Watch it here. The pair are also shown singing John Mayer’s “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” in the bathroom before their iconic “Señorita” performance.
  • Prior to getting together, Mendes truly valued their friendship. “For the past, like, four years, just being friends and not being able to see each other very often to finally being able to be together, she was always there to look out for me as a human being,” he said during the documentary. “She’s got my back, and I think that’s what your partner is for.”

In a new interview with GQ, Mendes said Cabello’s attitude on body positivity has “changed his life.” Before, he said, he would “have three hours of sleep” because he woke up early to work out and struggled with being a “pinnacle of fitness.” He told the magazine he believed that “if you don’t work out, you’re going to lose fans.”

Now, he says, Cabello has rubbed off on him and changed the way he sees his physique. Because of all the scrutiny she’s dealt with, Mendes says, Cabello is “so strong, so clear and confident with her [body] and so articulate and empathetic about other people’s.”

December 2020

Mendes reveals his relationship with Cabello turned romantic after a simple text exchange.

“I think I was just bugging her along for a long time about how I felt about her,” he said in an interview with Sirius XM. “I think I was in Calgary or Edmonton, Canada, and I was at dinner with two of my friends, and she texted me basically being like, ‘Okay, fine. I like you. Okay, fine. This is a thing.’ And I have the text, I have this, I screenshotted the text messages.”

He also said, “She is completely all in or nothing,” in the SiriusXM interview, according to Elle. “And I think that’s something that I wasn’t at the beginning of our relationship. And I think that a lot of people maybe are afraid to be all in, because if you’re all in, then you kind of, it hurts it. The blow hurts that much more if it ends, you know? But she really teaches me that if we have one life and we don’t have much time here, it might as well be all in if you’re in love with someone and you’re there. And I kind of learned that every day. She’s so absolutely patient with me, especially when I’m stressed or anything is kind of getting to me. She’ll text me. And if I ever am kind of just being bite-y with her and she’d be like, ‘It’s okay. I love you. No matter what, I love you, no matter what.’ And it’s like, that’s real strength and patience and love. But it’s amazing. It’s like a movie.”

November 2021

The couple announces their breakup. “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” they said in a joint statement, per E! News. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

March 2022

More than three months after their split, Cabello is opening up about her relationship in more ways than one. On March 4 the singer released a new song “Bam Bam” which heavily references Mendes in the lyrics.

In a new interview released the same day, Mendes revealed that their breakup was the result of shifting priorities. “My priorities have fluctuated and my focus has changed throughout my life,” Cabello told Zane Lowe during an appearance on Apple Music 1’s New Music Daily. “Those years that we were dating, I don’t even feel like, even while I was writing this album, and even still now, I guess, my focus is really on, How can I be a well-rounded person? And apart from my career, my focus wasn’t even on my career.”

She added, “And same thing with those years that we were together. My focus was just, How can I live a happy life and be in a healthy, happy relationship? I was doing therapy a lot. My focus really has shifted. And even now while I’m in promo mode, honestly, if I’m not having fun, what’s the fucking point? I think as I get older, yeah, the priorities shift. And I feel like that was that way for both of us. Because we both started so young too, we’re really learning how to be healthy adults. And that sometimes means not having your number one focus be your career. And that’s okay.”

As for how she's feeling now? “I love Shawn,” she said, per E! News. “And I feel like there is literally nothing but love for him. And this song is mostly just about like, ‘Okay, how do I make a song that shows the cycles of love, and life, and gives people….’ Whatever it is that’s going on in your life…hopefully, this can make you be like, ‘It is that way now, but things are always taking crazy turns.’”
