A guide to eligibility for the third stimulus payment

Download this fact sheet (May 2021; 2 pages; pdf)

The American Rescue Plan, signed by President Biden on March 11, 2021, includes a third round of stimulus payments to help families during the pandemic. The payment is worth up to $1,400 for each eligible adult and each qualifying dependent in a household. For example, a family of four could receive up to $5,600.

How much do you need to make to be eligible for the third stimulus check?

  • There is no minimum income needed to qualify for the payment. Households with adjusted gross incomes from $0 up to $75,000 for individuals (or up to $112,500 for head of household, and up to $150,000 if married filing jointly) will receive the full payment. Payments will then phase out to $0 once a maximum income level is reached (see the table). For example, an individual earning less than $75,000 can receive the full payment, individuals earning between $75,000 and $80,000 can receive a smaller payment, while individuals earning more than $80,000 will receive no payment at all.

Do I need a Social Security number?

  • As with past stimulus payments, those without a valid Social Security number (SSN) do not qualify. However, eligibility for mixed-status families has been changed. Now, dependents of any age can qualify if they have a valid SSN even if their parents do not. For example, in a household where both parents have ITINs and their children have SSNs, the children may qualify for the third stimulus check, even though the parents don’t.

How do I get my stimulus check?

There are several ways you can get your stimulus check:

  • File a tax return for the tax year 2019 or 2020.
  • Sign up for the stimulus checks online using the IRS Non-Filers tool or submit a simplified tax return.
  • If you didn’t get your first or second stimulus check or didn’t get the full amount that you are eligible for, file a 2020 federal tax return and claim them as part of your tax refund.

The deadline to file your federal and state income taxes this year is Monday, May 17, 2021
