After Tyler Herro made last year's Sixth Man of the Year odds race a no-contest, the Miami Heat sharpshooter was promoted to a starting gig, thus dropping him way down the early-season odds board.
In his wake, a new contender — Dallas big man Christian Wood — has risen to become a new heavy favorites.
Wood's made quite the impression with his new team, and the NBA odds are already heavily in his favor despite us being just a week in.
With a new season underway, here's a look at the latest Sixth Man of the Year odds.

Favorite to win NBA Sixth Man of the Year
Christian Wood (+160)
Christian Wood came into this season very much as an x-factor, not only in this award's market, but in the grand scheme of the Western Conference.
With Jalen Brunson and Kristaps Porzingis now elsewhere, Wood figured to be heavily relied upon by the Mavs to fill a secondary scoring role, and has responded with a career-high 24.3 points per game through the first three contests.
Wood's playing just 26 minutes per night, and both developing solid chemistry with Luka Doncic and thriving as the first option in non-Doncic lineups.
Bettors who were bullish on his prospects when Dallas announced he wouldn't be starting moved this market noticeably, and it's paying off for them.
Jordan Poole (+250)
A vicious training-camp right hook from Draymond Green wasn't exactly the way Jordan Poole had hoped to kick off this season.
After excelling as a starter last season, Poole' was handed the bag by Golden State in the offseason, but Klay Thompson's return meant his bench demotion, at least in the short term.
While we doubt Poole's suffering any long-lasting aftershocks from the Green snuff, he is shooting a fairly bad .413 from the field so far, and despite Golden State's early-season offensive explosion, is scoring just 15 ppg, well off last year's pace.
It's early, and he'll regress positively, but Wood's start indicates he'll have plenty of ground to make up.
Understanding NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds
Most sportsbooks will display odds in the American format as listed above. We'll use 2019-20's Rookie of the Year race as an example:
As the season progressed, with Ja Morant having been a huge favorite, his odds had a minus (-) sign ahead of the number:
- Ja Morant -500
This means that a bettor needs to wager $500 to win $100. Other candidates with worse odds would have a plus (+) sign ahead of the number. Early in the season, before any clear favorite is established, betting options will be listed as such:
- Zion Williamson +650
Here, a bettor stands to profit $650 for every $100 wagered.
If American odds aren't your thing, simply use our odds converter to switch the odds to decimal or fractional format. Most online sportsbooks also give you the option to change the odds format that you see.
It's worth noting that, recently, the Sixth Man Award hates big men. Since Antawn Jamison won playing out of position as a small forward on the 2003-04 Dallas Mavericks, only two non-guards (Lamar Odom '11, Montrezl Harrell '20) have claimed the trophy.
