Why do creative people have long hair?

View Full Version : Long hair = creativity poll

Darkhorse1

December 4th, 2008, 10:20 PM

I was noticing---maybe it's just coincidental, but I'm seeing many people with long hair are very creative. Whether you are a singer, painter, sewer or so forth, I am seeing lots of creativity.

So, I'm making a poll to see if there is a high volume of peeps who have long hair and are creative. It would make sense as we LOVe our hair styles and toys :)

Shorty89

December 4th, 2008, 10:22 PM

I write and dabble in art so I guess you can count me in. But, I don't see a poll here...

sahiba

December 4th, 2008, 10:24 PM

I am creative in thread work.

Darkhorse1

December 4th, 2008, 10:24 PM

Shoot! I forgot about writing! DUH--I just did the poll, so list that in the section not listed here.

EvaSimone

December 4th, 2008, 10:30 PM

I am creative... sort of. Not professionally but I dabble and sew wearable clothes etc.

Personally I think almost everyone is creative in some manner... we are humans, we create even if we aren't any good at it. I think it's almost akin to a biological drive. I doubt that you will get any "I am not creative" answers.

Darkhorse1

December 4th, 2008, 10:33 PM

Eva--I know some people who are totally un-creative. They are much more logical/scientific. Just a different way of using your thoughts/brain. But, you are right---even my dad who is a research scientist likes to refinish stuff/fix stuff. Well, when he has a second. :)

sneakybea

December 4th, 2008, 10:40 PM

I don't really do anything professionally (though I've had one poem published--yay!), but I write, belly dance, make beaded jewelry, knit and crochet, and am a decent singer. And now I feel terribly immodest!

AutumnSky

December 4th, 2008, 11:28 PM

Knitting, beadwork, cooking, sewing, you name it.
I was also a dance major in college, and want desperately to go back to it...

Ryanne

December 5th, 2008, 12:05 AM

I draw and sing, though not professionally.

Nightshade

December 5th, 2008, 12:21 AM

I do all of the above, though I haven't played an instrument in years I have over a decade of formal training. I also sew, write, paint, sculpt, do stained glass, and a few other hobbies :)

Maybe it shouldn't surprise me that at work I'm introduced as "This is Nightshade, she's the creative one."

Just for fun, here's the last painting I did. Please excuse the terrible glare from the flash :o

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=1142&pictureid=21063

And here's one of my stained glass creations:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=1142&pictureid=13265

What don't I do? Sing. :scared:

lizzyjo

December 5th, 2008, 01:31 AM

I wouldn't call myself creative. I'm much more left-brained. I did choose photography and music, though.

Calista

December 5th, 2008, 02:44 AM

I am the uncreative one. I sing quite well, but surely that´s not creative?! Composing a song seems creative to me, not singing it.

Isilya

December 5th, 2008, 03:16 AM

I do cross-stitching and I'm a beginning knitter. I also picked the paper option because I like to do origami, but only the simple things (crane, frog, tiny boat, ...).

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk38/Isilya86/th_PICT0182.jpg (http://s276.photobucket.com/albums/kk38/Isilya86/?action=view&current=PICT0182.jpg) http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk38/Isilya86/th_PICT0179.jpg (http://s276.photobucket.com/albums/kk38/Isilya86/?action=view&current=PICT0179.jpg) (clickable)
This is what I'm working on. Ignore the red cross, it's to mark the middle of the piece.

tiny_teesha

December 5th, 2008, 03:32 AM

i screwed up my vote a bit....

I play piano, like listening to music, create my own (i sing but i'm BAD!!! haha), i draw, paint, use a range of mediums, but my favourite is pacer and inks!!!!

I like the idea of sewing, in practise i am not too well at it. And i like to cook my own recipies too when the calling comes.

I like to dress up also in an eclectic (some call weird and mis matched) style :P.

I enjoy looking at others creativity. I also like takeing photographs- artistfully!

:) So i actually am almost every tick. ( i refuse to dance, i have 2 left feet!)

winter_star

December 5th, 2008, 03:35 AM

I'm creative! I would go crazy if I wasn't doing something arty. I do a lot of painting and drawing (there are a few bad quality pictures in my profile), I tend not to finish most of my projects because I get bored too easy though... I'm also an avid jewellery maker and am looking into starting a small business real soon.

Nightshade and Isilya, your projects are really really beautiful!

Jeni

December 5th, 2008, 05:22 AM

I'm not creative. I can sing and knit and sew but I don't really count that as being creative. If I wrote my own songs, designed my own knitting and sewing patterns then maybe. The only thing I can write is scientific research papers. You want a paper on Pediatric Bi-Polar disorder I'm your person, you want my feelings/opinions on a book, err not so much (creative writing is my kryptonite). I like facts not feelings, I've been called cold by many people. I'm from a family full of creative people, I'm the freak in the family.

I think my brother got my creativity, he seems to be creative enough for 2 people. He also got my imagination. Seriously as a kid you could put me into a room with TONS of toys and I could not entertain myself, put my brother in a room with nothing but walls and a carpet he can entertain himself for hours....He is still creative, he writes poetry (I HATE poetry, it makes me violent), plays in a band (writes songs), and has acted in the theater. He has long hair (between APL and BSL last time I saw him) btw.

I took one of those personality/learning style tests in College (in the dumb 1 credit "intro" class most people have to take). Apparently I came out as incredibly analytical. Apparently I should be like an engineer....um no the only math I'm good at is stats (which I like), I'm going into Social Work . My school counselor says I will bring something "interesting" to the world of Social Work, I have no idea if this is a good thing or not.

Edited to add: According to my mother I am very creative when it comes to coming up with arguments for things. I can rationalize buying or doing almost anything(very useful skill I think), she says. I don't really count the ability to argue creativity, but I will take what I can get I guess.

Sarahmoon

December 5th, 2008, 06:08 AM

I voted "arts". I'm mostly into dancing right now, though when I was younger I was into music and drawing more.

boukje

December 5th, 2008, 06:27 AM

I am creative in knitting and crochet :inlove:

florenonite

December 5th, 2008, 06:32 AM

I knit, write, play the piano, and try to sing (and fail miserably :P)

2luvmycurls

December 5th, 2008, 06:38 AM

I write music, enjoy creative writing, photography, and singing. I have NO talent, WHATSOEVER, in drawing, however. Stick people are the extent of my abilities. My animals would match that of a 4-year-old. hehe

Monsterkitti

December 5th, 2008, 06:45 AM

Im a photographer so voted for that :) Like to paint and draw but not awfully good at them :)

morguebabe

December 5th, 2008, 06:48 AM

Music, photography, scrapbooking, singing, sewing, and I sketch.
Non all too well but hey I try.

AJoifulNoise

December 5th, 2008, 07:06 AM

I scuplt tiny, intricate things. And I am just learning to sew (with a machine, I've always hand stitched) and I'm picking it up pretty easily. I also write a bit and I've been told lately by a writer friend of mine that I'm pretty good.

Altocumulus

December 5th, 2008, 07:50 AM

I'm a research scientist, and I think it can be a very creative profession. Thinking up hypotheses and ways to test them takes quite a bit of imagination!

I currently do threadwork and painted/drew when I was younger. I love to sing, but rarely subject others to my tonedeafness.

Eva--I know some people who are totally un-creative. They are much more logical/scientific. Just a different way of using your thoughts/brain. But, you are right---even my dad who is a research scientist likes to refinish stuff/fix stuff. Well, when he has a second. :)

Midnightluna

December 5th, 2008, 08:23 AM

I'm a bassist in a rock band, also I can knit and crochet so I guess I'm a little creative. I think most people are creative in some area of their lives. :)

mira-chan

December 5th, 2008, 08:33 AM

I draw, paint, a bit of photography, do needles work and dance. :)

I try to play the flute but that's more of a cruel and unusual punishment for my family.

rockkcor

December 5th, 2008, 08:40 AM

Proffesional sculptor here!
I do play some music too...

I think this is very interesting poll!

I can relate! I am doing research as well. I like to sew, draw, paint, make little poems and play guitar. And althoug I love to sing, I can't keep tone :( So I onlt sing in the car, alone, with the windows tightly shut.

mellie

December 5th, 2008, 09:40 AM

I am creative both with music and with textiles.

Isilya

December 5th, 2008, 10:57 AM

Nightshade and Isilya, your projects are really really beautiful!

Thank you, that's so sweet of you to say :flowers:

I make Jewellery and so on :)

neon-dream

December 5th, 2008, 01:33 PM

I am creative in the art of film :)

Medievalhair

December 5th, 2008, 02:56 PM

I'm creative in the art of Writing mostly. Then scrapbooking, photos and then music, I can't sing, but I can play an improv piece on the harp.

Islandgrrl

December 5th, 2008, 04:08 PM

Yes, creative.

I do needlework: cross stitch, needlepoint, embroidery, crochet, knitting - I can even tat. I quilt, too.

I'm also a web designer/developer.

I have nearly two decades of formal dance training, too.

No singing, though. That would just be scary.

Eireann

December 5th, 2008, 04:35 PM

Musician and knitter. :knit:

Vitalai

December 5th, 2008, 04:51 PM

I used to take art lessons, but I'm not very good. I've taken an interest with photography recently. I'm asking for a camera this Christmas!

I knit, crochet, make jewelry, and dabble in other crafts. I play piano and compose music. I used to take ballet and tap, but then I quit. I wish I hadn't.

Most of all, I love writing.

MountainGypsy

December 5th, 2008, 04:53 PM

Fun poll! I was always the creative, dreamer type of kid. I did have music lessons, piano for years but was not very good or maybe not very dedicated. My strength was always creative writing (poetry in particular), and photography. I was also really involved in community theater up until I got married; just ran out of time I think. My more recent creative ventures are jewelry making and gourmet cooking (that's an art right?). Nightshade, love the painting! My mother is a painter but that gene missed me!

So here are some creations to share -

I used to play the piano, but not anymore. I love cooking from scratch... making my own bread, muffins etc. I've started embriodery and crochet and looove them both. Right now I'm embriodering some roses to hang on the wall.

W. J. Maria

December 5th, 2008, 09:37 PM

I don't know about this. My hair won't grow long and I am pretty creative! I sometimes feel I'd be more creative with my hair and less creative with other things if my hair grew! Anyway, that is just me!

dearladydisdain

December 6th, 2008, 08:10 AM

I suppose I'm a pretty creative person. I've been dancing since I was four, I'm a theatre major, I love photography, I play the piano & flute, I used to be in a handbell choir, I knit, I sew, etc?

zen_oven

December 6th, 2008, 09:11 AM

I draw, knit, and sometimes write, though I don't think I'm much of a writer.

Aditi

December 7th, 2008, 02:33 AM

I am very good in painting, i even decorate pots with trinkets and coffee mugs to give as gifts to my friends and family members

Poppy Seed

December 7th, 2008, 02:45 AM

I bellydance (and have also had classes in ballet, tap and jazz) and I love a good ceilidh! Musically, I had years of piano traing, though I haven't had access to one for some time and I am a harpist - play at the occasional wedding etc. As part of the bellydance creativity, I sew by hand and with a machine to create costumes to wear!

CurlyOne

I've been dancing ballet for almost 20 years and I've been dancing jazz for about 6 years. Also a ballet teacher, choreographer and former professional dancer.

I learn etymology, linguistics and other languages for fun.

I sing the blues and I got a scholarship to go to a music school for sound engineering, but with graduate school, it's going to be years before I can have the time to go. Lame.

I paint with watercolors and my calligraphy is decent.

I have a degree in creative writing and I'm working on a degree in French on the side, while I get my MS or PhD in biochemistry.

I've published a few poems.

joyfulmom4

December 8th, 2008, 10:39 AM

I draw, paint, sew, design and sell my own sewing patterns, crochet, knit, hand spin on both a drop spindle and spinning wheel, and enjoy many other crafts/arts as I have the opportunity to try them.

joyfulmom4

December 8th, 2008, 10:39 AM

Cute! I especially love the second one.

I crochet, I just made two hats.

I draw, paint, knit, sew, design... I had long realised the connection between creativity (and a certain quirkiness) and a desire to have long hair.

CurlyOne, the hats are lovely!

NiAosSi

December 8th, 2008, 11:04 AM

I can play acoustic guitar.

GibsonGirlV

December 8th, 2008, 01:56 PM

I'm all of the above: I love photography, writing, visual art, performing in theatre and singing, scrapbooking, beading, knitting and sewing, fashion design, styling, and many other things.

GlassEyes

December 8th, 2008, 02:16 PM

I'm creative...or at least I think of myself as such. I draw, mostly in pencil, and I write stories and such.

Kerynna

December 8th, 2008, 02:48 PM

I think I have gotten more creative as my hair has gotten longer.

Alun

December 8th, 2008, 03:55 PM

I voted as being a singer. I was a singer in a rock band a long time ago, and never gave up my day job - does that count?

AprilElf

December 9th, 2008, 03:07 AM

I definitely believe there is a connection between creativity and preference for long hair. By no means do long hairs have dibs on being creative, or vice versa, but I think there is a pattern here. ;)

I'm musical - I play the cello (and have learned other instruments at various times), and have sung in choirs.
I'm crafty - mainly bookbinding these days (have also dabbled in hand-made paper and paper marbling, knitting, crochet, sewing, cross-stitch)

Chrissy

December 9th, 2008, 05:09 AM

I write poetry. It's not all the time but I have done it for years.

Darkhorse1

December 10th, 2008, 08:14 AM

It does seem as if everyone is creative! Doesn't have to be professionally--just something you love to do--singing, music, drawing etc.

I love to sing, I just don't do it in public anymore--I loved being in choir as a kid! Now? I sing in my car :D ;) And the shower :D

I just recently got published for an article I wrote, but until now, have been the starving writer/horsey person.

I LOVE beading and stitching (Cross) and making things--though my sewing projects are just making drapes and pillows as I have to do it all by hand (no machine)

Glad to meet all you creative peeps!

GREAT photos here!!!

Calanthe

December 10th, 2008, 08:26 AM

Yes, I am. I knit, do embroidery, paint (on walls), beading, work with paper, make paper...

I can't sing, though or play an instrument. I'm virtually tone-deaf and sing horribly off-key...:D.

Euphony

December 10th, 2008, 08:27 AM

I love to sing. I enjoy making jewelry - beaded, wire, and/or with sheet metal. I also enjoy photography. I sew, I enjoy making my own personality in my sewing projects. I'm not advanced enough yet to completely make my own pattern so I embellish on an already existing pattern. I also make my own bath and body items, developed the recipes and use colorations to make them attractive.

RedStripe

December 10th, 2008, 11:25 AM

Dance takes up a lot of my time and attention, so that's my major source/outlet of creativity. But I also do sewing and needlework (mostly crochet), writing, and videography.

Haith

December 10th, 2008, 02:40 PM

I am creative with almost all of the things listed. I draw, paint, write, sculpt, sew, knit, sing, I do a lot of things! I have a phenomenal amount of energy, and I sleep very little so I have a lot of time too.

rhubarbarin

December 10th, 2008, 06:22 PM

I am naturally musical and artistic (good at drawing, very very good at sculpting) but I do not use my talents, LOL. I've never been interested in a career in the arts, am uninterested in all the practicing it takes to play in instrument well, and I loathe performing.. I would rather read or play on the computer rather than make create.

Rarely I will make things out of clay.

mellie

May 10th, 2009, 01:13 PM

OK, this is a very interesting observation I just made lately so I wanted to resurrect this thread!

I am a songwriter, and I noticed that when I cut my hair way back from mid-back to above shoulder-length in August, my writing muse was suddenly and completely GONE!! I just had no creativity anymore! For months now, nothing, nothing, nothing - no matter how hard I tried to sit down and write, nothing came.

Finally, my hair is starting to get back to the lengths that I feel pretty and comfortable with myself again. And interestingly enough - my writing has come back!!

It never occurred to me, but maybe I need my hair long in order to feel fully myself, to be creative...maybe the short hair made me BORING? :D

enfys

May 10th, 2009, 01:21 PM

Mellie, you're a musical Samson!

It's a shame the poll was closed. I'd have ticked each one except the dancer option!

I work in an art and craft shop and it's pretty much the only place I see long hair in real life (no super lengths though; not more than tailbone tops) outside of the Asian communtiy.

Enfys, thank you! You educated me today! :) I actually didn't know the full story of Samson - so I just looked it up. Wow! Very amazing story.

In case anyone doesn't know either, here's a synopsis from Wikipedia:

An angel appears to Manoah, an Israelite from the tribe of Dan, in the city of Zorah, and to his wife, who had been unable to conceive.[2][5][12] This angel proclaims that the couple will soon have a son who will begin to deliver the Israelites from the Philistines.[5] The wife believed the angel, but her husband wasn't present, at first, and wanted the heavenly messenger to return, asking that he himself could also receive instruction about the child that was going to be born. Requirements were set up by the angel that Manoah's wife (as well as the child himself) is to abstain from all alcoholic beverages, and her promised child is not to shave or cut his hair. He was to be a "Nazirite" from birth. In ancient Israel, those wanting to be especially dedicated to God for awhile could take a nazarite vow, which included things like the aforementioned as well as other stipulations....

He then falls in love with a woman, Delilah, at the Brook of Sorek.[7][8][15][16] The Philistines approach Delilah and induce her (with 1100 silver coins each) to try to find the secret of Samson's strength.[8][15] Samson, not wanting to reveal the secret, teases her, telling her that he will lose his strength should he be bound with fresh bowstrings.... Eventually Samson tells Delilah that he will lose his strength with the loss of his hair.[7][8][15][16] Delilah calls for a servant to shave Samson's seven locks.[8][15][16] Since that breaks the Nazarite oath, God leaves him, and Samson is captured by the Philistines.[3]][15] They burn out his eyes by holding a hot poker near them.[15] After being blinded, Samson is brought to Gaza, imprisoned, and put to work grinding grain.[15]

One day the Philistine leaders assemble in a temple for a religious sacrifice to Dagon, one of their most important deities, for having delivered Samson into their hands.[15][10] They summon Samson so women and men gather on the roof to watch.[15][16][10] Once inside the temple, Samson, his hair having grown long again, asks the servant who is leading him to the temple's central pillars if he may lean against them (referring to the pillars).[7][15][10]

"Then Samson prayed to God, "remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes" (Judges 16:28)".[3][15][10] "Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines!" (Judges 16:30)[10][17] Down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it.[3][7][16][10][17] Thus he killed many more as he died than while he lived." (Judges 16:30).[7][17]

I'm super-creative. In fact, most of my personal interests are arts-related in some way. A few focus on fitness, but that's just because I like to be outdoors and really can't stand still long. :pinktongue: I'm constantly making things, though.

My problem is I'm jill-of-all-trades-master-of-none. I can draw, paint, write, sing, play musical instruments (3 of them well - although my count was up to 6 in high school), dance, act, cook, make cards (scrapbooking style)....All of these things I can do well enough to make people think, "Wow, she's really good at that," but not well enough to try to make a living of any of them.

And I kind of feel like if any of it became a "job" to me, I'd cease to enjoy it as much. Just me. :)

I love knitting but I haven't had time to do it much since I went back to school this semester. Before I learned to knit I didn't see myself as creative at all.

Why do rock artists have long hair?

Musicians tend to be ahead of the cultural curve and to shape it. Because it came of age in the 60's, rock music became strongly associated with long hair. Even newer rock musicians in the older sub-genres (classic rock, heavy metal) tend to keep to this convention. Conversely, punk rockers tend to have short haircuts.
