The first spin-off to land was Power Book II: Ghost, and after solid ratings the series has now been officially renewed for a second run by Starz.

Announcing the news on the show's social media channels, a caption read: "We thought we told you that we won't stop. Season [two] about to be even more."

The series, a direct sequel to Kemp's crime drama, aired its first season towards the end of 2020 and has gone down a storm with fans, so anticipation is already high for the next outing.

Speaking shortly after the renewal, Starz Programming president Christina Davis, said, "The success of Ghost right out of the gate is a tribute to the quality of Courtney Kemp's storytelling, the strength of the Power franchise, and the loyalty of our incredible fans."

She added: "What Courtney, Curtis and their team have accomplished in creating the Power universe is nothing short of extraordinary. It is a privilege to be able to continue the journey of Power with the audience and we look forward to delving deeper into this world in exciting new ways for many seasons to come."

Power Book II: Ghost season 2 release date

There's not been any information so far about a release date for the second series, but RadioTimes.com predicts that the earliest we can hope for is September 2021, exactly a year after the first series debuted.

It seems that we will be heading back to the Power universe before then though, with two more spin-off series also in the pipeline: Power Book III: Raising Kanan, which is expected in the summer, in addition to Power Book IV: Force.

Should we catch wind of any more official release date details, we'll keep you updated right on this page.

Power Book II: Ghost season 2 spoilers

Season two plot details are slowly emerging, and one thing is for sure: there should be no shortage of drama.

According to a statement released by Kemp: "Tariq's journey with the Tejada family will get even more complicated — and more dangerous — as he begins to understand the man he's going to become."

And she went into more detail in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, explaining, "Well, obviously Tariq has committed a huge murder and there's going to be a big response to that on campus.

She added, "Where we had begun an encroachment of his drug life into his school life with the incidents that took place in episode eight with the attempt on his life and the body in the pool, now his whole drug life is crashed into his campus life in a real way.

More like this

"And Tariq definitely feels like he's walking around as a ticking time bomb. His relationships are going to get more complicated, and while that's all happening he's still got a love life."

And she revealed yet more information to Deadline, revealing that ethics is going to be a major theme of the second run, which will see Tariq's Canonical Studies class move into an ethics unit.

"Is there such a thing as real greater good, right? Is there a greater good?" she said. "Does the end justify the means? I mean, that's a question that we're always asking in Power but when you're asked to write a paper about that or speak about that in class and you have committed some pretty heinous acts in order to achieve your end...that's one I could address and say that those are some things that are coming along for sure."

Meanwhile, star LaToya Tonodeo recently told Digital Spy that there could be trouble for Tariq in subsequent episodes after a deal he struck with Monet.

"The Tejada family are vicious, cutthroat," she explained. "It's no-nonsense. I mean, it is Power – Monet doesn't play, so if he messes up, it could be really, really bad for him.

"If anyone messes up in our family, or outside of our family or whoever, it's a bad thing for them. Monet Tejada is a queenpin, she does not play, so it could be bad."

As more official information emerges, we'll be sure to add all the relevant information here.

Power Book II: Ghost season 2 cast

No official casting announcements have been made at this stage, but we'd expect to see most of the main cast return.

With that in mind, we'll probably be seeing more of Michael Rainey Jr, Naturi Naughton, Mary J Blige, Shane Johnson, Gianni Paolo, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Daniel Bellomy and Paige Hurd.

One character who we might be seeing less of is Tasha, Tariq's mother, who was moved into a protection programme during the events of the first season.

Speaking to Deadline, Courtney Kemp explained: "Tariq has made a choice to save his mum, but it's a choice that he doesn't have total control over because he doesn’t know where she's going.

"So, I think what will come up in the next season is his lack of ability to contact his mother, to be with his mother, and to have that connection.

"Part of the journey of season two is absolutely going through and making decisions without the benefit of someone to call."

Of course, there's also the possibility of some new faces as well – we'll let you know when casting announcements are made.

And someone who seems certain not to appear is Professor Jabari Reynolds, who was played by Justin McManus in season one but was killed off during the season.
