Given:

One side of the square increased = 30%

Formula used:

Area of square = a2

Calculation:

Let each side of the square be a

According to the question

New side of the square = (130a/100)

⇒ 13a/10

New area of the square = (13a/10)2

⇒ (169a2/100)

Increased area = (169a2/100 – a2)

⇒ (169a2 – 100a2)/100

⇒ 69/100

Increased percentage = (69/100 × 100)

⇒ 69%

∴ The required percentage increase in area is 69%

Shortcut Trick If the sides of the square increase by a% then the percentage change in area = a + a + a2/100

Here change in sides is 30%

⇒ change in the area = 30 + 30 + (30)2/100

⇒ 60 + 900/100 = 69

∴ The required percentage increase in area is 69%
