Press the same button while interacting with the workbench itself.

I dont know an way in the vanilla game. maybe there is a mod in the nexus. But it is just an controller simplicity. Since it's Select on controller, which also changes your view from 1st to 3rd.
Does it open instantly when you activate via Workbench ... if you've added a lot of stuff to the menus then it does take a little time to open ... my own takes over 5 secs everytime I press it

This. So many times this. I've had it take up to 10 seconds to open in certain places that I'ved used the drop/store glitch to up the build limit. All depends on how many objects you've built in that settlement.

You cant because bethesda deliberately makes design choices that favor consoles over PC.
In order for you to open it instantly, they would need another keybind. Which controlers dont have enough buttons for.
I can see how it's a problem on a controller because there's not enough buttons.
I play on the PC and i just cant believe there isn't a way to open the build mode instantly WITHOUT being close to the workbench. I've checked for mods and googled
IF i push "E" on my workbench, yes it opens build mode instantly. If only i could do this anywhere in my settlement. I guess it would take something to remap keys or whatever. So if anyone know a way dont be shy!

I just hold down V.
Default is
same key-button that you press for 3rd person view but you hold it down longer.

I wish the option was there but yeah, the controller thing versus lazy PC ports... meh. My issue with "hold V" is that half the time, the game magically decides I'm not holding the key, and suddenly I'm in 3rd person. Then, sometimes it *will* pick up that I was holding the key, so viola, I'm in build mode. Except when I exit build mode, I'm back in 3rd person.
And I hate 3rd person in Bugthesda games in general. Being swapped into it without warning is jarring and immersion-breaking. /QQ

Yep.
Listen dear bethesda. I spent the first 200 hours on fallout 4 and i havent been to diamond city yet - THATS how much i like to build in first
person mode :D (Played alot of rust etc.)
Call me stupid for not directing the problem until now, but im doing a new play-through where im actually going to do quests and i got reminded of how annoying "hold - V" is!
