Let's talk about how to make clothes in Roblox! With this post and the accompanying video, you'll see just how easy it is to get your kids started creating their own unique style.

How? Well, you've probably seen the awesome avatar shop in Roblox Studio. It's packed with hundreds of different items to choose from, and it's always being updated with new content. Whether kids are looking for a new outfit for their avatars, or just want to browse the latest additions, the avatar shop is definitely worth checking out!

Besides that, though, they’ve probably thought about how great it would be to be able to create their own clothes in Roblox too, or maybe they’ve wished they could design the perfect outfit for their avatar. 

Either way, learning how to create clothes in Roblox is a great way to add their own personal touch to their gaming experience. And beyond just creating clothes, we are going to learn about the different types of clothing, and then how kids can monetize it all so they can make real money from what they’re doing. 

So, let’s jump right in!

1. Create Roblox Account & Obtain Robux

To start off, we are going to need a Roblox account and at least a little bit of Robux. 

(For those of you who don’t know, Robux is the currency of Roblox. You can use Robux to buy clothes, hats, or accessories for your character on Roblox. You can also use Robux to buy games or in-game items on Roblox.

You can buy Robux with real money or you can earn it by playing games on Roblox. Basically, if you want to buy something on Roblox, you need Robux! Learn more about Robux slang.)

Now, kids won’t need a ton of Robux to get started here, but they’re going to want at least 10 just to upload to servers. More on this bit to come, but it’s worth a mention before you get going!

First, let’s log into a Roblox account, and then on the left-hand side menu, click on “Avatar.” Avatar is where they’ll create their own Roblox avatar, but it’s also where they’re going to be finding the “Create” template so that they can make the file they’re looking for. 

2. Navigate to “Create a Shirt” Screen

Now by clicking on “Clothing” along the top row, and then “Shirts” that’s where we are going to be getting our template from. On the right-hand side, there should be a button that says “Create.” Let’s click that button, which is going to bring up the option to “Create a Shirt.”

3. Choose Between Standard Shirt vs T-Shirt

Before going further, let’s talk about the different kinds of shirts. In Roblox you can choose between two different types:

T-Shirts can only have an image and a solid color behind it. Thus, it’s rather limited in terms of what kids can actually create. 

With the standard shirt, though, creators can do pretty much whatever they want with in terms of the design, logo, and colors. Thus, the standard shirt is typically more appealing to people who are looking to buy clothing in Roblox. 

4. Download a Template

Back on the “Create a Shirt” screen you’re going to see a message that says “Do you see the template? If not, download it here.” Click “download it here” and there will be this image as shown below, which is the Roblox shirt template. 

Upon first glance, this is going to look pretty confusing, so let’s break it down!

First, the different colors - green, red, yellow, orange, blue, etc. - represent the different aspects of the Roblox character body. So, the front of the torso is red, “up” is basically the top or shoulder area; left and right is the inside portion of the torso, and back is, well, the back. The bottom is the bottom portion that isn’t really seen unless the Roblox character is running and moving around.

On the bottom half of that template you’re going to see additional t-shapes for both the right and left arms, which again will follow the color pattern of red being front, etc. 

Now, to download and update the template, you can do so with Photoshop. Right-click on the image and then click “save image as” and then save anywhere you’d like. 

Next, open up Photoshop and the file that was just downloaded and then update the template to your designer heart’s content. To save, go to “File” and then “Save.”

5. Upload Updated File to Roblox

For creators to get their file back into Roblox, go back to the website and locate the green “Upload for 10 Robux” button. They won’t click it yet, but just make sure they’re on the screen where you can see that option. 

(And as mentioned, 10 Robux isn’t a ton of money, and works out to be an inexpensive $.13, give or take!)

Then, “Choose File” and select the template they just made and saved. You’ll see the “Shirt Name” field and kids can name the shirt whatever they want. 

When ready, click that “upload” button and then again to confirm, “would you like to upload your shirt for 10 Robux?”

Once done, there will be an icon and the name of the shirt under “Shirts.” You’ll also notice that the image for the shirt is simply a piece of paper with a dotted outline—this means that the shirt is currently under review by Roblox, just to make sure it’s appropriate and able to be posted. This might take a couple of hours for approval. 

6. See Your Shirt in Real Time

Kids can now open Roblox Studio by clicking the “Create” at the top navigation bar. Then, they can click “Start Creating” and finally “Baseplate” to head to a blank screen. Once that page loads, go to “PLUGINS” in the main navigation menu.

From there, click “Build Rig,” which will basically insert a dummy character to throw clothing on as if someone was really playing. Choose “R15” or “R6” which is whatever type of model kids want to use. For now, let’s click “R15” and then “Block Rig.”

Now the dummy Roblox character is showing on the screen. Kids should then click the plus sign next to “Dummy." Here they’ll then look for “Clothing” and in the left-hand “Inventory” they can right-click on the shirt, click “Copy Asset ID” and then paste the ID right next to “ShirtTemplate” in the “Appearance” section. Once they press “Enter” the shirt will show up on their Roblox dummy model. 

The whole reason for this is for kids to see how their shirt looks before they monetize it. If they’re going to put a product out there for others to see and download, they’ll want to make sure it goes out to the masses. 

Now, let’s go back to the Roblox website and then select “Avatar.” Have kids click on “Clothing” and then “Shirts.” You should see the shirt they created—click on it. Again, if the shirt design isn’t here it’s most likely still in the processing and approval stage. 

Once a shirt has been approved, go to your shirts and click the down arrow next to the gear icon. The options are "configure" and "advertise"—click “configure.” You’ll land on the “general” tab where you can make sure the shirt your child wants to monetize is in fact the one you’re currently dealing with. 

When confirmed, click “sales” under the “general” tab and you’ll see the “configure shirt” screen with a toggle button on the right-hand side of the “items for sale” line. Click the toggle bar, which will turn green and then bring up a pricing screen. Once your child knows how much they’d like to sell their shirt for, enter the amount. 

As a tip, you don’t want your child to price their shirt so expensive that nobody will buy it, but on the other hand, you don’t want the shirt to be so inexpensive that they’ll be leaving money on the table by selling at a lower amount. One guideline is to start selling shirts around 6 or 7 Robux. Also remember that Roblox will take a small percentage of your sale (and that the minimum price you can set is 5 Robux). 

Once “save” is clicked, if all goes well, you’ll see a green bar that says “successfully updated” which is great! At this point, the shirt is ready to be purchased and downloaded by others.

If so, you might find yourself coveting the digs of your Roblox friends.

You know you can buy some shirts and pants in the Roblox store, but how can you create your own clothing?

With some patience, a good image editing program, and this guide, you’ll be well on your way to designing some of the coolest clothes in the Roblox-sphere.

Use This Platform For Creating Roblox Clothing

As a Roblox player, you’re probably aware that the game is available on numerous platforms.

A Windows-only game for its first six years of existence, the game went mobile in 2012 with its release in Apple’s iOS App Store.

A couple of years later, the developers published an Android version of the popular game, and about a year after that, the game came to the Xbox One.

That said, even if you enjoy playing Roblox on one of these latter platforms, we highly recommend you design and upload your clothing using a Mac or Windows PC.

Yes, there are ways to create and even upload shirt and pants designs on a mobile device using a combination of apps, but overall, the experience is much better on a personal computer than on a tablet or phone.

If you absolutely must use an iPad, iPhone, or Android device, we’ve left some tips and suggestions below.

What You Need To Get Started

Before getting started, you’ll need a few things.

1. Image Editing Software

First, you will need some type of image editing software.

Many options exist, and you might already have one you like, but whatever program you use must support transparent layers.

If that sounds like Greek to you, don’t fret.

We’ll explain the process in a moment.

For now, you just need to select and install your software.

Because of the layer requirement, your basic programs like Microsoft Paint won’t suffice.

Yes, you can use Photoshop, but it’s not necessary to purchase a license if you don’t already have one.

Instead, you can turn to one of many free programs like Paint.net, GIMP, or the web-based Photopea.

GIMP is more full-featured than the others, but as a result, it has a steeper learning curve for the uninitiated.

Because of its ease of use, we’ll utilize Paint.net for this guide.

Note: Paint.net is not available for macOS, so if you’re using a Mac, use another option like GIMP instead.

If you do use a different program, know that, conceptually, everything is the same, though the software will function a bit differently.

To download Paint.net, go to https://www.dotpdn.com/downloads/pdn.html and click on the link to download the software.

Once downloaded, extract the .exe from the .zip file and double-click it to start the installation.

Follow the prompts and wait for the installation to complete.

2. Clothing Templates

The second thing you’ll need is the clothing templates provided by Roblox.

Roblox requires that you use its templates when creating standard shirts or pants for your avatar.

If your goal is only to create a t-shirt, though, you don’t need the files.

To obtain the templates navigate to the following URL:

Toward the top of the page, you’ll see two colorful images, one labeled “Shirt” and one labeled “Pants.”

Right-click on each one and choose “Save image as…” Navigate to the folder you want to save the files in and then click the “Save” button.

Remember where you save these files because you’ll need them when you start designing your clothing.

3. Roblox Studio

While not absolutely necessary, with Roblox Studio, you can test and preview what your designs will look like on avatars before uploading them to the game.

Since you can’t upload shirts or pants to Roblox without paying (see below), it’s best to make sure your designs are the way you want them before shelling out those precious Robux.

To get Roblox Studio, go to https://web.roblox.com/create and click the “Start Creating” button.

After running a check, Roblox will present a button to “Download Studio.”

Double-click the .exe file to install Studio.

Once Studio is installed, install the Clothing Previewer plug-in.

4. Money

While designing t-shirts, standard shirts, and pants is free, uploading the latter two items to Roblox will cost you money.

You’ve got two options here.

The first is to sign up for Roblox Premium.

With Roblox Premium, you pay a monthly subscription fee in one of the game’s three tiers: $4.99, $9.99, and $19.99.

The plans are all identical save for the number of Robux you receive each month: 450, 1,000, and 2,200, respectively.

In other words, you can enjoy all of the same premium features on the bottom plan as you can at the top.

What are the premium features?

With premium, you have, as mentioned, the ability to upload clothing designs to your Roblox account (assuming you still have Robux left in your account), but you also get access to some exclusive levels and items among other perks.

Also, if you want to be able to sell your clothing designs to other users, you have to have a premium subscription.

You set the price and Robux takes a 30% cut of the proceeds.

The second option is to purchase Robux as needed for each article you want to upload.

If you are only interested in creating a couple of pieces of clothing and have no desire to sell them, this might be the better option.

As of this writing, the cost to upload is as follows: t-shirts, free; standard shirts and pants, 10 Robux.

One Robuck costs a little more than $0.01 in US dollars, but you must purchase Robux in groups of 400, 800, or 1,700.

1. How To Create A T-Shirt For Roblox

As hinted at above, there are three types of clothing you can create for your Roblox avatar.

These are the t-shirt, standard shirt, and pants.

We’ll start with the t-shirt since it is the simplest to create.

The Roblox t-shirt consists of a solid color with an image on the front.

That’s it.

Pretty basic, right?

To get started, you’ll first need to find or create an image.

You can use Google image search to find an image, but make sure the illustration or photo you use is royalty-free.

If you prefer to create your own, you can use any image manipulation program like Paint.net or a web tool like Canva.

Whichever route you choose, your image must be square and have 512 x 512 dimensions (in pixels).

You can resize images quickly with the Windows Photos app.

Once you have the image you want to use, save it to your computer and then go to roblox.com and log in to your account.

Then click on the “Create” link at the top of the page.

The first time you click on this link, you might be prompted to download Roblox Studio.

As we said above, this isn’t necessary but might be nice to have.

Click on “Manage my experiences” to proceed.

Select the “My Creations” tab if it’s not already selected.

Scroll down and click “T-Shirts” on the left side of the page.

Click on the “Choose File” and browse to find and select your image file.

Click the “Upload” button.

After the upload, your t-shirt will show up in the avatar editor page.

2. How To Create A Standard Shirt

You’ll notice we didn’t use the template or Paint.net in creating a T-shirt.

We’ll use these now.

If you didn’t already download the shirt template using the link above, you can also get the template by going back to the “Create” tab and clicking on “Shirts” on the left side of the window.

On the resulting page, you’ll see a note towards the top that reads, “Did you use the template? If not, download it here.”

You can click on that link to get a copy of the template.

Next, launch Paint.net and then open the template file.

Go to “File” and then “Open…” and browse to the template.

(Make sure you select the shirt template and not the pants file.)

With the template open, take a minute to study the diagram.

Notice that the colors correspond to different areas of the avatar’s body.

There are three different surface areas, one for the torso and one for each arm.

These diagrams “fold up” to wrap around the body as shown in the pictures on the template.

Keep in mind that this template is only a guide.

You will be adding your design on top of the template using “layers.”

Also, know that anything outside of the colored rectangles will have no effect on your shirt.

Roblox will include only what falls within those rectangular guides.

The next step is to create a new layer.

Click on the “Layers” menu and choose “Add New Layer.” Paint.net should add the layer on top of the “Background” layer containing the template, but verify to make sure by checking the “Layers” palette in the bottom right corner of your window.

With your new layer selected, choose a color from your “Colors” palette in the bottom-left corner.

Next, select the rectangular selection tool from the “Tools” palette.

For this guide, we’ll make the entire shirt the same color, so click and drag to create a rectangle that completely covers the shirt template area.

Once selected, press the “Backspace” key to fill in the selection with your chosen color.

Now, let’s add the image we downloaded for the T-shirt to the front of our shirt.

Click on the “Layers” menu and choose “Import From File…” Select your image and click “Open.”

Back in the layer palette, clear the checkbox for your color layer to hide it.

We need to hide this layer temporarily so we can make sure we position our image in the correct place for the front of our shirt.

Once the color layer is deselected, hold down the “Shift” key and grab the corner of the newly imported image to resize so it fits on the front of the shirt.

Then click and drag the image to the correct position on top of the box that says “Front.”

Re-check the box for your color layer so that it is visible again.

Now select the topmost layer and click on the “Merge Layer Down” button (the button with an arrow pointing down).

Click it one more time so that all of your layers are merged into one.

Click on “File” then “Save As…” and change the “Save as type:” dropdown to “PNG.”

Give the file whatever name you like and then click “Save.”

Click “OK” on the next screen.

Now your file is ready to be uploaded to Roblox.

As you get more proficient with Paint.net, you can mess around with shading templates (or even create your own) that will give your clothing a more realistic look.

Search the Internet for “Roblox shading templates,” and you’ll find plenty of free images.

3. How To Create Pants

Designing pants uses the same process as above, except that you will use the Roblox pants template instead of the shirt template.

Start a new Paint.net file and open the template.

Take care to note the orientation of the different faces of the pants.

Testing, Uploading, And Selling

Once you have created your designs, you can preview them in Roblox Studio.

Open the software, log in with your Roblox credentials, and select a game from the “My Games” tab.

You must test your clothing inside of a game.

You should have a default game on your account, but if not, create one.

With the “Home” tab selected, scroll down under “Models” in your “Toolbox” until you see “R6 Roblox Dummy.”

Click and drag the icon to the main game window.

Right-click on the dummy and select “Zoom to” to get a close-up view.

Now click on the “Plugins” tab and make sure “Clothing Previewer” is selected.

In the Clothing Previewer window, click on “Import Templates” and select your clothing design.

Click “Open.”

Now, click and drag the template on top of your dummy.

You might have to rotate the avatar to see the front.

To do so, click on the “Model” tab and then click on the “Rotate” button.

This will allow you to position the avatar so you can view the shirt or pants from all angles.

To upload your design, go back to the “My Creations” tab on the Roblox website and click on “Shirts” or “Pants.”

Click the “Choose File” button and select your PNG file for upload.

Remember that uploading shirts and pants costs Robux—10 for each—so you will need Robux in your account before you can upload.

With your file uploaded, click on the “Upload for 10 Robux” button, and then click “Confirm.”

You’re all done!

Easy as pie, right?

Navigate to your avatar page and you can equip your character with your newly minted clothes.

Want to sell your new designs?

You must have a premium account.

Click on the gear icon and choose “Configure” then click on the “Sales” tab.

Tick the box to enable the item for sale and set your price for the item.

Designing Roblox Clothing On Mobile Devices

If you’re desperate for a mobile option, it is doable, but we don’t recommend it because the process is a bit more tedious.

Just like on your PC, you’ll need a photo editing app.

We recommend the Picsart app.

Download the clothing templates to your phone and open them in Picsart.

Use the tools palette to color and design the template as desired.

When finished, press “Apply” in the top right corner, then “Next,” and then “Save” (at the bottom).

The upload instructions are the same as for a regular PC, except that you must use the desktop Roblox website and not the mobile version.

What About Hats And Other Accessories?

Not everyone can upload hats, custom faces, and accessories for use in Roblox.

The company treats these items differently than it does shirts and pants.

To be able to submit your custom designs, you must be part of the User Generated Content (UGC) program.

Joining this program requires an application process in which you submit your own unique designs for review.

The program is competitive as Roblox limits the number of developers they accept, most likely for quality control purposes.

The company doesn’t want a glut of poorly rendered and unimaginative content floating around the Roblox-sphere.

We should also note that, unlike shirts and pants, which are composed of multiple 2D surfaces, hats and the like are 3D objects.

Therefore, the process for creating your own designs is much more involved and requires the use of 3D rendering software like the open-source program, Blender.

Tutorials abound on YouTube, and you can also find help from other developers on the Roblox developer forum for tips getting started.

As of this writing, the UGC program is open for applications, but the acceptance window could close at any time.

Conclusion

With determination and practice, you’ll soon be designing and uploading your own Roblox clothing like a champ.

Even if you’re not the best at obbies or the richest tycoon, at least you’ll look good playing the game.
