What is an oil pressure sensor?

The oil pressure sensor is monitors the pressurization of the oil as it travels through the engine, and reports that pressure to the engine's computer.

How does the oil pressure sensor work?

Without the proper pressure, oil can't reach all parts of the engine or move as rapidly as it should, thus wearing it out faster. The oil pressure sensor is able to monitor this pressure and alert the computer when it drops to low. The computer can make changes to protect the engine and alert the driver of the problem.

When the oil pressure sensor fails, the signal that it sends to the engine's computer will be inaccurate, causing the engine's computer to behave as through the oil pressure is too high or too low.

This may cause the check engine light or oil pressure warning light to illuminate on the instrument cluster. Also, the engine may be placed in limp mode for engine protection.

Can I drive with a oil pressure sensor problem?

A car with low engine oil pressure should not be driven. The engine may start and run normally, but without oil pressure, you can ruin your engine. If your oil pressure warning light is on, you should have the car towed to a repair shop.

How often do oil pressure sensors need to be replaced?

There's no set schedule for replacement, or even a way to predict when the sensor might fail. Most vehicles will never have an issue with the oil pressure sensor, and changing the oil and oil filter on time may help prevent premature failure.

Oil Pressure Sensor Replacement Cost Estimates

The average cost for an Oil Pressure Sensor Replacement is between $161 and $185 but can vary from car to car.

I just took care of this last week on a 2014 2.4L...

First, thanks to the posts above for sharing the engine diagram and the 1-1/16 socket size requirement!

Background stuff:
I believe the OEM part number is: 68145662AA
Apparently, the updated part number is: 68145662AB -- this is what will show up online/ebay more often (the image in this post reflects the part I received, but the image itself was harvested from another listing because in the interest of transparency I'm not promoting any particular parts seller, so I had to find an image without a watermark). I can confirm that installing the part ending in "AB" resulted in a successful removal of the error code and CEL light. Also, my wife has subsequently driven her Cherokee at least 150-200 miles, so I can confirm the part has continued to operate without issues.

Install steps:
My solution was to remove the front passenger wheel and approach it from inside the well. In addition, I would recommend a socket extension bar of at least 3-5 inches WITH a wobble attachment because of the awkward angle. This still gives you very little wrench travel in that tight space, so you will need to be patient.

I initially started with a breaker bar, but in reality, the factory torque was very minimal. Thus, it wasn't necessary. However, this is one of those parts that does not get easier the more threads are backed out, so you really never hit a point where you can quit wrenching and spin with your hands instead. Hopefully, that makes sense.

The last of the first three images should be the unit's connector. If you are unfamiliar with the red tab, you are going to destroy the harness, or your fingertips, trying to remove it the way us "home garage/DIY mechanics" would usually approach an electronic connector haha. Anyway, just slide the red tab from the open end to reveal more of the pointy end and that will release the harness. Excuse my technical jargon.

TLDR: I took pics of the unit's location in a three-part quasi "zoom" into the general area. The red circle is a guide to the specific location, for our 2014 2.4L, at least.

What happens if oil pressure sensor goes out?

Symptoms of a Bad Oil Pressure Switch or Sensor. If there is a problem with the oil pressure sensor, then this will usually activate the engine oil pressure light. It could also cause an inaccurate reading to be given from the oil pressure gauge.

Can you drive with a messed up oil pressure sensor?

You should not take this situation lightly, as it is an indication that your engine has lost normal oil pressure. If you see this light on, we highly suggest that you stop driving your vehicle immediately and turn off your engine. Driving with this light on your dash can cause severe, irreversible engine damage.

How much does it cost to replace the oil pressure sensor in Jeep?

The average cost for a Jeep Wrangler oil pressure sensor replacement is between $195 and $230. Labor costs are estimated between $132 and $167 while parts are priced at $63. This range does not include taxes and fees, and does not factor in your specific model year or unique location.
