Air 2s vs Mini 2 Reddit

I’m planning on buying a new drone, I’m new at this and I just want the drone just for recreation, I like how complete the air 2s is but I’ve seen that it has a lot of problems such as conectivity problems, controller problems and more, but the mini 2 doesn’t have sensors and it is more sensitive because of the small weight, so what would you guys recommend? Or should I buy the air 2 instead?

level 1

I just bought the mini 2 48 hours ago. I thought about it a lot (mini 2 vs air 2 vs air 2s) and ended up at the mini 2 for the following reasons:

  1. It’s half the price of the air 2 and a third the price of the 2s. If you crash it and/or destroy it more than twice in a year (past the DJI care limit), you’re throwing a lot more money away. And I assume that as a novice drone pilot I am going to crash it…

  2. You can fly the mini in more places because of the lower weight. I don’t think I really want to buy a drone that I then can only use in deserted areas or have to actively avoid people.

  3. I have no idea whether I will use the kit long-term, so better to spend £500 now and then if I want better equipment, sell it second hand and upgrade in the future, than go all in right now.

  4. Not having OA will (hopefully) make me a more cautious pilot. Not having active track is a bit of a downer but I can live with it.

Can you elaborate a little more on this. I thought the only difference in restrictions was that you didn't have to register a sub 250g in Canada or the US

The Air 2 and 2S require FAA registration, the mini does not, although both of the Airs and the mini require you to pass the TRUST test to fly recreationally. Honestly, I would consider the Air 2 as the balance between the mini and the 2S, if you are looking for a more mature and still very capable platform.

level 1

  1. Get the drone that you can afford. The Air 2S is a far superior drone to the Mini 2 but it's 2.5x more expensive.

  2. Get the drone that works for where you want to fly. If you want more range in the country or to fly in higher wind areas go with the Air 2S. Then again if you want to fly in more urban areas the restrictions on the Mini 2 are far less than the Air 2S making the Mini 2 the better choice.

I have the air 2 and the air2s while a buddy of mine has the mini 2. You're definitely going to want the updated software on the bigger drones that allows it to fly itself and follow you.

Get the air 2.

Well if you want it purely for recreation, don’t even bother with the air 2s…. To be honest I’m not sure why these two would be contenders with that frame on mind, as the air 2s is almost triple the price.

If anything, I can see a debate between the cheaper but still awesome, mavic air 2 and the mini 2.

I have had an air 2s since launch and have had no problems with it. I use my Note 9, so experience may vary by phone. If you have the option between the 2, the extra modes (like lock on follow) make the air 2 s a much better drone.

As someone who debated this question 6 months ago when I bought my first drone I gotta say for the first 5 months I was super happy with my choice of the Mini 2. I’m now getting a bit more confident/advanced and thinking an Air 2s would be nice.

Besides the very important question of weight based on what country you live in and/or might travel to with the drone, I really think it largely comes down to finances. For me, the extra $700+ dollars to get the Air 2s was gonna be a bit of a stretch financially. If an extra $700 won’t make much of a difference to you then I’d say get the Air 2s. Otherwise go with the Mini 2. It is still an awesome drone with terrific range, good battery life and perfectly solid picture and video quality.

Ohh and either way get the Care Refresh. The piece of mind is worth it. I’ve crashed once in the first six months into some tree branches while flying under a bridge and luckily just needed to replace the damaged propellers and that was it.
