The tv show is worse on the sex. There is some incest and brutal weddings and beheading.

Epic tale but not for kids

This is an epic tale with strong links to historical events of the Middle Ages (circa 15th century) and practices of the age. I would recommend the series as a must read for any lover of fantasy. However, I would strongly advise against children reading these books due to themes and events that should not be taken lightly or normalised in the eyes of children. Adult themes include: Graphic violence, war, murder, executions, torture, mutilation and war crimes. Graphic sex and sexual acts, incest, rape, gang rape, genital mutilation, prostitution, domestic violence, subjugation of women, forced child marriage. Bigotry, xenophobia, slavery and servitude. Normalised alcoholism and drug use. Occasional profane language.

Fun read but discuss gender roles

It is a fun read over all, but there are some really unsavoury scenes in it. My take is don't prohibit any books, but do discuss them. It is not terribly graphic, the problem is more with the ideas that are being conveyed: a 13 year old girl being sold off into forced marriage, raped daily and starting to enjoy the rape and fall in love with the rapist?! That is fantasy alright. And throughout most of the book braveness (and manliness) is equated with physical strength, sword swinging and killing. It is a very 1950 view of gender. There are other themes that offset this somewhat: a person with dwarfism, a boy who looses the ability to walk after an accident and has to find a new identity, a fat cowardly man who finds his own brand of braveness. So, let them read it, but discuss it! And, FYI, there are lots of issues with beloved fantasy classics - for instance, I find Tolkien quite racist.

A good read, but be cautious

The book is an overall very good read, and hard to put down at certain points. While it does contain violence, sex, etc, the descriptions are not nearly as graphic as in the show and usually very brief. The sex scenes are not worded as they usually are in other books and the language is not anything a teen would hear at school. It is a very engrossing book, but it ultimately depends on the maturity of the child in question.

Maturity is key

I'm 15 and this is probably the best series I've ever read, yes it's filled to the brim with sex, violence, incest, rape and profanity, give this phenomenal piece of literature a chance and deside yourself.

Inappropriateness is exaggerated

This book is definitely less graphic than the show. While there is violence, it is nothing a mature 13 year old can’t handle. Same goes for language, my 13 year old has heard more swear words at school than in this book. While there is sex, I say again: a mature 13 year old can read this. I wouldn’t recommend the show for them though.

SERIOUSLY!?

people actually say this is for adults? i haven't watched the show or anything but there are like two lines that i wouldn't let my kid read in this book and i can always scratch them out i mean common the book is huge it would be a shame to ban him from reading a good book because of a few scenes (that aren't as bad as you would imagine)

This Is NOT A Book For Children!

I did not ever consider writing a review of this book before today. I was picking up my nephew from school and one of his classmates(4th grade) was reading Game of Thrones! Apparently, her mother was totally fine with it(I waited and asked her mom) I myself have read Game of Thrones and enjoyed it but would certainly never allow my kids to read it in my house. The first page starts with a very detailed scene of a man being decapitated. The book also had countless of sex scenes, one of which was twincest. This is not a book for children! I have no idea how that mother could totally be fine with her daughter reading this book. So please let your children wait till they are old enough to actually enjoy the book.

What age is Game of Thrones books?

Is Game of Thrones ok for a 12 year old?

13+, streaming It's still a bit violent at times, but this supernatural teen classic has a fun, campy tone and its many relationships and motivations are much more in line with what teens can handle compared to GoT.

Is Game of Thrones child appropriate?

Parents need to know that Game of Thrones (based on the novels by George R.R. Martin) is big-budget fantasy series that frequently depicts brutal battles and graphic, detailed acts of violence (including those against children and women), as well as lots of nudity and no-holds-barred sexuality.
