The game explains how to recruit new crew members as lieutenants right after you get your ship and go to Megaris. During one of the conversations with Barnabas, he will suggest recruiting a new archer. This is how the Equal Employment Opportunity Program quest starts. Just to remind you, you need to stun the opponent instead of killing him and then approach him and select the "recruit" option.

From the moment you unlock the recruit option, you can look around for new candidates. Look for legendary characters marked gold.

In your search for ''candidates", you can use the help of your eagle - Ikaros Scan all enemies in the visited locations - sooner or later you are bound to encounter a gold one - an example is shown in the screenshot. Gold NPCs include e.g. fort commanders and mercenaries tracking the main protagonist.

Enemies marked with gold are usually very resistant, thus sneaking up on them to stun them might not be enough. Start by unlocking the Sparta Kick ability - this is one of the level 1 abilities.

Attack the gold enemy and weaken him so that he is left with little health points. Then, use the Sparta Kick to stun the enemy and throw him to the ground. You can now approach the defeated NPC and press the "recruit" button.

Barnabas’ next errand is to recruit more men, since the seas are dangerous and many men have been lost to the pirates. In particular, an archer he knows is working for some bandits nearby and he wants to "persuade" him to join the crew.

The Marooned Bandit Camp is located to the east of your current location, just off the coast of the Phokis region. Approach the island and dock the Adrestia on the south side of the island and then use Ikaros to tag your targets, as well as the bandits in the nearby camp.

Once you've found the archer, hop off the ship and climb the cliff and then sneak up behind him and follow the on-screen prompts to knock him out non-lethally. You can now approach him and offer him a position on your crew, which he'll automatically take, and then open the Ship Menu to add him to the Special Lieutenants slot.

You can recruit any soldier or bandit in the game, but only some are worth having as Lieutenants. To view their traits and abilities before recruiting them, hover over them with Ikaros for their details.

Your new quest is to reach a small island where you have to deal with a group of bandits. Look at the picture above and head towards the place marked on the map.

The game informs you that knocked out enemies can be recruited to your ship’s crew. Remember that enemies must be stunned and have a small amount of health. One of the best ways to stun them is to, i.e. kick them near the end of a fight.

Open the ship’s window and assign the recruited bandit as a lieutenant. This slightly increases your ship’s combat capabilities. Go back to Barnabas and complete the quest. You receive 1,900 XP.

Barnabas's ship was under-crewed, so he suggested a new hire. Kassandra decided that she'd be in charge of recruiting new crew members herself.

Dialogue

Barnabas and Kassandra talked aboard the Adrestia.

  • Barnabas: I lost a couple of good men in the scrap with those pirates. The seas are more dangerous now that Sparta and Athens are at each other's throats.
  • Kassandra: We need new recruits to better our crew...
  • Barnabas: I know where to start - the best archer I know, he'd be a valuable asset.
  • Kassandra: When can we meet him?
  • Barnabas: Well... You're going to have to persuade him.
  • Kassandra: What do you mean?
  • Barnabas: You get him aboard, and I'll talk him into it... A little drachmae should sweeten the deal.
  • Kassandra: So, you want me to... knock him out.
  • Barnabas: No, no. Well, maybe just pacify him a little. Then get him to the ship, so we can have a little talk. Everything will be fine, I promise you.

As the Adrestia approached the Marooned Bandit Camp, Barnabas was in a cheerful mood.

  • Barnabas: The gods are with us today, Kassandra. The sea is calm, and the winds are warm.
  • Kassandra: It's beautiful.
  • Barnabas: It is, my friend. It sure is. That's the island. You'll need to be cautious - it'll be crawling with pirates.
  • Kassandra: I should send Ikaros up to get the lay of the land. He'll spot my target.

With Ikaros having spotted the archer, Kassandra dove into the waters to swim to the island. She crept to the platform Phemios stood on, incapacitating him, then making an offer for him to join the crew.
