I'm looking at picking up a lightweight rail for use on a 'recce' build; BCM MCMR 13 or MI Combat Rail 14".

I like FSB's so free-floats are new to me. Does one offer a better/stronger barrel nut design/lockup versus the other? Or are they similar enough that it will come down to personal preference?

I think that will be the case, but I figured I'd ask anyways.

Thanks in advance.

I love my BCM rails. I run the QRF with FSB on most of my rifles even one of my SBR. but, i like it better than the MI I have tried in the past. cant speak of weight as I have never really cared for a few ounces or a pound.

You can't go wrong with either rail. I do feel like the Midwest industries rail is easier to install onto the firearm as you don't have to worry about the extra anti rotational ear insert like on the BCM and you don't have to worry about going to far back on the barrel nut. The Midwest Industries rail also has an integrated QD socket, whereas on the BCM, you would need to add it. The other nice one to look at from Midwest Industries is the SLH rail. It uses the same attachment method as the combat rail, but has a cleaner look in my opinion.

While it is true that the MI rail is probably easier to install, I would say that is arguably the ONE advantage it has compared to the MCMR. The anti-rotational mechanism BCM uses is a pro as far as most users are concerned and the BCM barrel nut design seems more secure, but that is just my opinion. As long as you are somewhat mechanically savvy or at least have some patience and access to youtube, the difficulty of installing the MCMR rail should not dissuade you from purchasing it. Worst case have a gunsmith slap it on.

I would get the BCM MCMR.

MCMR, Although I'm kind of liking the MI Combat Rail, MI is always good to go too, but I love my MCMR. I also love the Centurion Arms CMR MLOK, but that is a little more pricey, but probably my favorite MLOK rail, and one of the most underrated!

^^

Ideally, it would be Centurion C4/CMR on everything, but that is an expense I cannot make at the moment.

For now, MCMR purchased. Thanks everyone.

Feel you bro, I was in the same boat, and its not quite as expensive as the C4 series. Ended up getting a CMR awhile back when I could that's just lying around as of now, will end up using it for build later on down the road, but its very solid, if not the best MLOK rail I've handled, when you get a chance to upgrade it you won't regret!

I dig how snug and solid my QRF is on the barrel nut despite being a pain (for all but 5 sec) to get that proper gap that's required so that the bolts passed through.

OP should also be aware BCM includes a QD mlok attachment with the MCMR. Correct about not integrated but included none the less.

Good choice OP.
Get your heatgun ready for installation of the MCMR.
Heat that sucker up proper and it will fit much easier.

I have both and like both. My opinion is the BCM is probably a stronger attachment method but the MI is a great rail for the money.

Are Midwest Industries handguards good?

Great name brand. I like the slim feel of it and the full rail all the way to the end. I have Midwest industries handguards on all of my AR's now and highly recommend them. Although I think these are the best handguards the last one I received was scuffed in several areas on one side.

What does MCMR stand for in guns?

Featuring the same industry leading barrel nut and lock up design as originally introduced on BCM's evolutionary KMR handguard, the MCMR Series of handguards gives the shooter modularity in the M-LOK platform.
