Best hotels in new york city reddit

Are you looking for specific services/amenities? Would you prefer a certain chain or independent? Which area of the city?

I have stayed at The Quin, The Beekman, and The Kimberly. But these were all special rates under $275/night. And I wasn't looking for spa services or anything above/beyond.

Have never been to any that are consistently more like the Plaza, Carlyle, Mandarin Oriental, St. Regis, Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton

From reading some reviews, some have said they prefer the Andaz 5th to Park Hyatt.

Haven't been to the Conrad, other than through the lobby after seeing a movie at Regal Battery Park to get to the Loopy Doopy bar. Not a bad spot to grab a drink.

Might want to check https://www.forbestravelguide.com/

We're looking for a decent hotel in a decent area (safe and near everything). We'll be passing through on our way upstate.

Is this a realistic? Any advice from locals?

EDIT: Thanks everyone! Upvotes all around. We ended up getting extremely lucky. A friend of a friend has an apartment near west Central Park, and she offered it to us for a few nights. Some great suggestions here, though, and I'll be filing them away for future trips. I really appreciate everyone's response.

Hello Amex fam! I'm currently planning an anniversary weekend and I would love your suggestions for FHR in New York City.

Ideally we want to be around Time Square because we have a few Broadway plays lined up. Right now Amex has a 15% off the Equinox Hotel (only 20 min walk from Broadway), which I'm tempted to book but I don't want to be suckered into a deal.

Other options that seem interesting are the Conrad Midtown, The Beekman and The Chatwal.

In your opinion, what are the best options for the $200 platinum card NYC hotels?

Your help is very much appreciated! 🙏

A site like Tripadvisor should be an excellent resource for you. While this town has hundreds of hotels, as NYCers we pretty much all live here and have homes of our own so very little need of hotels. You'd be better off asking just about anyone except us.

The penthouse suite at The Mark. Oh, you don't want to pay $75,000 a night? How could I have known? You asked for the best!

level 2

Clean, mid-range, affordable, maybe a nice restaurant.

level 1

Yeah, you're gonna need to include some details. We have more than a couple hotels here...

level 1

We're missing some info, such as location and price range.

I've actually stayed at the Kimpton Muse and it's perfectly lovely (though the street it's on can feel a little grimy at night despite, or maybe as a result of, being only steps off of Times Square). The location is very hard to beat for everything you've listed.

I did the InterContinental Times Square for the 4th last year since it's tall with great views, but it's probably not worth it unless you're able to guarantee high floors, which may not be available when redeeming points. It'd also be unfortunate if you ended up facing the Hudson instead of the East River, though there would be sporadic fireworks to see from any direction. Overall it's very nice and also decently located, but I'd definitely take the Kimpton Muse over it (unless again, you're specifically booking a high floor corner view).

I heartily disagree with the current top comment -- you're tourists, so do things like tourists. Times Square will always be packed, but that won't be a concern since you're not trying to get through the crowds on your way to work. The subway is quick, but those are precious minutes lost when you could've just stayed closer in the first place. If you do need to take a subway, the Times Square stations are not as bad as NYers like to claim plus they've got access to a number of different lines.

As far as crime goes, the tourist hotspots of any city are the safest areas in those cities. Especially for the 4th, it'll feel like there's 2 cops for every person in Times Square. You'll be completely safe, just don't be stupid because you can never eliminate the opportunistic pickpocket.

Wife and I got a sitter for a few nights in January. Heading to NYC to eat our way through the city. Thinking park Hyatt or andaz fifth. Any other options that as good or better or what should I choose between those. Is it possible to get upgraded without much status? We’re doing a tue and wed night. Have UR, Hyatt, Hilton, and Marriott points at my disposal. Most of the stuff we want to eat/see is around midtown so those two Hyatt’s stood out to me.

I've been upgraded to a suite overlooking Carnegie Hall all three stays there, without even asking. First time I was just an Explorist, other time a Globalist, the other as a GoH. The friend who did GoH for me has had even better success. They have a house car that will take you up to 10-ish blocks from the hotel, which could be very handy. The room and bathroom is huuuuge. They have a nice Nespresso in the minibar cabinet. It's our favorite hotel besides the PH Vendome. Bring a bathing suit for the pool/sauna/hot tub.

What is GoH? I just booked but I’m only a lowly discovering 😂 that house car could be super handy

I know this isn’t Midtown but my favorite hotel in NY is the Conrad downtown. Rooms are huge, quiet hotel with great breakfast if you are a Hilton diamond, no wait for elevators.

level 2

Is the great breakfast taking into account the change from free breakfast to a breakfast credit?

level 2

Isn’t there a Midtown one too?

level 1

Was just at the Hilton Midtown, the location is absolutely perfect. We walked every where from there. Hotel is nice, stayed in a skyline view room. (Not worth it), but the room itself was standard Hilton. Credit can be used to buy snacks at small cafe.

Probably best to check the FT threads on those individual properties to see how recent stays have been. I had 1 night at PH about 2 weeks ago; they had a hard time getting me checked in early, but late checkout wasn't a problem. I think you'll have -some- chance at an upgrade since it's probably less busy mid week in Jan, but I wouldn't count on anything above 1 or 2 level upgrade from base room.

The problem with FT is that all the data points come from largely the same small group of people. Most people that travels frequently (and avoid DYWIAing at hotels) will tell you that their suite upgrade/service experiences are MUCH more positive than what is reflected on FT

The Park Hyatt NY has a reputation for limited upgrades. At most, you can expect a normal 1 bedroom suite though studio suites are much more common. The St. Regis NY is also somewhat stingy with suite upgrades but is known to have given some pretty crazy suite upgrades. Even huge suites like the St. Regis suites are fair game.

That’s a pretty rough review. I’m feeling set between the PH and andaz fifth at this point.

level 1

I stayed at both on a trip last month as a globalist and didn’t get upgraded. Your chances without status are slim. The lowest category room at both properties is awfully nice though.

level 2

Which property did you prefer? I’m not counting on an upgrade. Just curious if it was remotely possible.

level 1

Transfer UR points to Hyatt if need be but the Park Hyatt is excellent. Last time I went, they had a hard time getting us checked in early so they slapped a $200 food & bev credit on the room for the inconvenience. No problem with late checkout. Have stayed there a few times and it feels like 30K for a standard room there is a glitch in the matrix. Also, Angelo’s Coal Fired Pizza is just a couple doors down and it’s amazing.

level 2

That honestly sounds great. We’re going to travel light since it’s a short trip. I’d gladly delay checkin for a credit like that. Thanks!
