They have Bilstein as well. I went with the Bilstein 5100 since I have a two inch lift, but you can get Bilstein 4600's for stock height. I've had them on for 15,000 miles and these shocks are great. The Jeep handles the street as well as it does offroad with them. They are quite a bit more comfortable that I was expecting. I plan on going with Bilstein again for my next Jeep.

I also recommend the Bilstein 4600 series shocks. This is a high pressure monotube design - the pinnacle of shock technology. This type of shock offers the best handling, ride control, fade resistance and most rapid responsiveness of any shock type. They have a lifetime warranty too.

Rockauto's pricing for Bilsteins is very high. Please PM me or email me at [email protected] for pricing or if you have any other questions.

I have MONROES on my JEEP and 88 Chevy. Honestly I can't tell the difference between one shock brand and another. My old ones wear out and the new ones are better than what I took off so I mainly let price be a big factor. MONROEs are reasonably priced and get the job done for me. The ones on my Chevy truck seems softer than the ones on my JEEP. They ride pretty stiffly and I guess that may mellow with age and miles.

I just got kyb gr2's, I like them, but since I only had about 86k miles on the oem ones I didn't notice much of a difference. Honestly, though, it's more about spring softness than shock absorbers.

x3 on what Kolak and Dave said. That's also whats on my ride and will be replaced with the same brand when the time comes.
And again, and again, again!

IMO, only other two to be mentioned along with Billys are King(very high-end) and Fox

Will the Bilsteins work on stock ride height and also when I have the $$ on a 2" lift, or do I need to replace the shocks when the lift is installed? (didn't mean to hijack)

Perhaps the 5100's for 2" lift will work on stock and 2" lift

The 2" lift Bilstein 5100 series shocks are over 2" longer when fully collapsed vs the stock length shocks. So if you install them at stock height you'd have that much less up-travel than you should. You'd have to be careful not to overcompress them or that will ruin them.

Maybe get a simple 2" Budget Boost kit for now to avoid the worry?

I ran Bilstien on my 00 XJ and they were the best shocks I've tried to date. I'm doing a WJ this time and did not have the budget. Kolak hooked me up with the ProComp 9000 shocks. Checking them out they have some pretty good pressure. I'll update at a later date when lift kit is installed.

I sent you an email. I had this same question as well. I generally agree the "you get what you pay for" motto, but I've seen shocks for as low as $15, and upwards of $80. Is there that much difference? I just got a 99 Limited, with 245k mi, and I'm pretty sure the shocks are original. I have no plans of lifting, or major modifications. I just want a good, reliable ride that will pull me through the next 2-3 years. Thanks in advance.

Also they're digressively self adjusting, meaning they firm up for corners and curves but soften for sharp impacts.

Thanks for clarifying. I will be able to make a better decision based off of your feedback. Also, I received your email. Thanks for the hasty response.

I have been driving for almost 40 years and usually own my vehicles for over 10 years and average almost 200k km before selling. I have never replaced shocks on any of my vehicles... until now. Short of a a shock springing a catastrophic leak, I can honestly can never tell when shocks wear out.

I have owned my 02 WJ almost 9 years and it currently has over 160k km. The WJ has been surprisingly reliable (knock on wood) and I hope to keep driving it for years to come. I owned a 94 ZJ since new for 14 years before i crashed it and replaced it with the WJ. The ZJ required a lot of expensive repairs, but it had the Up Country suspension which was much firmer than the WJ's standard suspension even though the ZJ was more than 8 years older at the time. I never liked the cushier ride of the WJ. And recently, the WJ seemed to wallow more on the highway and really roll on corners.

After reading this thread, i ordered a full set of the Bilstein 4600 from Kolak. I usually buy all my parts from Rock Auto. Kolak was much cheaper and the goods were delivered in about a week. I had to find the time and an available mechanic to do the install which was finally done yesterday.

There is a noticeable but not huge improvement over the old shocks (like I said it is hard at least for me to tell if shocks have gone bad). The WJ does not wallow or roll as much as before. The suspension feels firmer, but still not as hard as my previous ZJ which had stiffer Up Country springs. Now, the WJ goes over bumps with a firm thud instead of cushy bounces as before. And the brake dive is not as severe as before. The Bilsteins are 2-3 times more expensive than the economy shocks, but I am expecting them to last. I will probably stick my head underneath to admire the blue and yellow for a couple of days more until they get covered in dirt.

funpig,
If you want to reduce that roll, the Addco anti-sway will be a night-day difference.
Kolak normally has those too and installation is DIY. Look under your Jeep and observe the pencil-thin OEM unit, then behold what shows up at your door.

You'll know it was the right upgrade when you see it for the first time.

What shocks will give the smoothest ride?

The smoothest riding shocks you can get would be ones identical or nearly identical to factory tuning, typically something like the Bilstein B4 series, KYB Excel-G Series, or Monroe OE Spectrum. All of these have the most forgiving valving for road handling and comfort.

What brand of shock absorbers are best?

Top 5 Best Shock Absorber.
#1 Bilstein 24-186742 Rear Shock Absorber..
#2 Bilstein 24-186643 Shock Absorber..
#3 Monroe 58620 Load Adjust Shock Absorber..
#4 Monroe 58640 Load Adjusting Shock Absorber..
#5 ACDelco 580-435 GM Front Shock Absorber..

Will better shocks improve ride quality?

These parts wear out over time just like any other part of your car that wears out like tires. If it's been a while since your struts or shocks have been changed or if you can't remember the last time you got new ones, a new set can greatly improve your ride quality compared to your old, worn-out ones.

Which is better struts or shocks?

Struts are designed to be much stronger than shocks since they are weight-bearing components. Additionally, they help dampen vehicle jolts and improve your vehicle's steering and alignment.
