Unless you have been sealed up in your dorm glued to your Xbox for the last three years, you have almost certainly heard of the hit TV series Blue Mountain State. It first aired on Spike back in 2010 and ended just shy of two years later with three seasons to its name. All episodes can be watched at leisure on Netflix. The first and easily most popular season featured the perfect yin and yang of Alex Moran and Craig Shilo. Alex, the hard partying, zero fuck giving backup quarterback who slams every piece of tail that crosses his path, is having the time of his life. He openly states how much he loves getting irresponsibly drunk and abusing his status as a football player to sleep with girls. Sure he doesn’t have big dreams, but he’s happy with his life and his future, and I’ll be damned if I don’t respect someone who’s doing what gives them fulfillment. Craig on the other hand is wrapped around his girlfriend’s (Denise) finger. He was national high school player of the year and top recruit as a running back. He works hard, has dead set plans for the NFL, and could easily turn out any girl at the school. Unfortunately he chooses to remain his girlfriend’s little lap dog since he is “in love with her” even though they haven’t even had sex yet. Even though the show is fictional, the relationship between Shilo and Denise plays along with perfectly valid real-life dynamics. 1. HE IS COMPLETELY SUCKED INTO HER FRAME The one who holds frame in a relationship is the one who is in charge. Denise knows that Craig would never cheat on her, and thus is fully in control over him. She chooses not to have sex with him because she is wholly aware that it would be giving up a huge chunk of her power, thus rendering it more difficult to exploit him in the future. She does not love or respect Shilo, she loves and respects his potential as a superstar NFL player and the money that comes along with it. She openly states this in the “LAX” episode when she is lecturing the Lacrosse players’ girlfriends about withholding sex. 2. ALPHA FUCKS AND BETA BUCKS This is where proof of game comes into play. Shilo is a good looking guy, and is obviously high status as the school’s starting running back. However, since he has zero game, Denise is incapable of loving him. He has zero dread instilled in her and thus she is completely comfortable cheating on him, which she does multiple times while lying to his face about it. She gets hers while knowing she has her future meal ticket locked up under her thumb. Craig Shilo, #33 RB, Blue Mountain State University 3. SHE GETS MORE RUTHLESS WITH EVERY FAILED SHIT TEST I have to give a hats off to the actress who plays Denise, because she has mastered the bitchy passive aggressive tone to a T. She viciously talks to Shilo like he’s 10 years old and he just hangs his head and goes along with it, which both validates her power and lowers her respect for him one shit test at a time. A prime example is in the promise ring episode, when Sammy shits on the coffee table and mashes the ring into the turd. She orders him like a mother to her little boy to put the ring on and never take it off, even though it’s covered in shit. He has the power to say no, he has no obligation whatsoever to put the ring on. He could have put his foot down, told her to eat shit (heh) and left for the strip club with Alex, taking her down a peg, increasing dread, and increasing his self respect all in one fell swoop. But what does he do? He takes the ring out of the turd and puts it on without question, thereby accomplishing the opposite of those things. A thing I noticed when recently watching this episode, whether a coincidence or just very good writing, is that Denise is visually disgusted that Craig is complying with what she told him to do. She hates that a man is following her orders, like every other woman ever. No woman can respect a man she can control, it’s biologically impossible. 4. THE SECOND DREAD IS INSTILLED, THEY BANG Halfway through the season when Craig finds out Denise has been cheating the whole time, he finally does something right and dumps her ass. Not ten seconds after he says he’s done with her, her interest level skyrockets and she begs him to fuck her, since her power over him has vanished in one fell swoop. He refuses and leaves, completely turning the tables in one fell swoop. Craig immediate goes off to bang a bunch of other girls. Denise tries to get him back by making him jealous, openly prancing around with other campus athletes. Craig, now immune to her bullshit, shoots down her attempts with a spray of 30 caliber zero fuck rounds and keeps going around doing his own thing, obviously much more happy and aloof. Eventually, Craig returns to her apartment to grab something he forgot. Since the power dynamic has completely turned, she just stands there, eye fucking him while he grabs his stuff. Craig, recognizing this, immediately grabs her and they fuck like animals. If anyone has ever banged an ex, they can probably confirm that it’s some of the craziest sex you will ever have. It’s like no strings attached make up sex, the two best kinds mixed into one. Afterwards, Denise briefly regains her smug satisfaction, thinking she has reclaimed her meal ticket. What does Craig do? Crafty fucker sneaks out the window to meet the boys at the strip club and keep the night going. He has officially made the transition from lap dog to alpha wolf and is realizing his potential as a high status male on a college campus. Once again, yes I know it’s a fictional show. However it plays with relationship dynamics in a realistic way that most movies and shows wouldn’t dare to nowadays. If something like this were to happen in real life, it would yield an almost identical outcome. The writers definitely had their shit together. As for Blue Mountain State, watch that shit. While it isn’t the most wholesome of shows, it’s fucking hilarious and super quotable. The perfect choice for hungover Sunday afternoon binge watching. Now GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!! Why did Blue Mountain State get Cancelled?While it's been reported that the show was cancelled due to a decline in ratings, producer Eric Falconer says differently. He tweeted, “BMS wasn't cancelled because of a drop in ratings. Season 3 was actually up 20% + in all male demographics vs S2. It was a budget issue.”
