I apologize if this question has already been addressed, but I cannot find out if it is safe for babies and kids to wear a lightweight jacket or coat for that matter, while strapped in and riding in a car seat? My daughter is 4 years old and my LO is 6 months old. Any information would be SO appreciated! My baby is freezing putting her into and out of the car seat even while trying to keep her covered with a blanket. Thanks guys!

A thin jacket or sweater is fine. Fleece is good. Anything that doesn't compress. To test a jacket put her in her seat with the jacket on, tighten it down, then take her out without loosening it. Then put her back in with out the jacket. If it's too loose, the jacket is too puffy.

Fleece jackets are recommended. Puffy coats are definitely NOT ok! Even if the harness appears tight over the coat, in an accident all that fluff would compress, creating a big gap between child and harness, which could cause child to be ejected from the carseat. To see the amount of difference it makes, put baby in the carseat with a coat on and tighten the harness. Then unbuckle, remove the coat, and rebuckle without tightening the harness. That's how loose it would be in an accident!

A coat or snowsuit can compress under the harness of a car seat, sometimes up to four inches! This compression can cause the straps of your child's car seat to not fit properly, leaving a dangerous situation. Sleeping bags for babies can also add extra slack under the harness, creating an unsafe ride for your baby.

How thick should a baby jacket be in a carseat?

If you can fit more than one finger under the harness at the child's collarbone, the coat is too thick and is not safe for use with the car seat. (See what properly snug straps look like.)

Can babies wear light sweaters in carseats?

Never use clothing or blankets that interfere with providing a properly tightened harness. An unsecured child can come out of the restraint during a crash.
