Car Seat Questions I apologize if this question has already been addressed, but I cannot find out if it is safe for babies and kids to wear a lightweight jacket or coat for that matter, while strapped in and riding in a car seat? My daughter is 4 years old and my LO is 6 months old. Any information would be SO appreciated! My baby is freezing putting her into and out of the car seat even while trying to keep her covered with a blanket. Thanks guys! 0 Advertisement | page continues below comments (6)
Can babies wear thin coats in car seats?A coat or snowsuit can compress under the harness of a car seat, sometimes up to four inches! This compression can cause the straps of your child's car seat to not fit properly, leaving a dangerous situation. Sleeping bags for babies can also add extra slack under the harness, creating an unsafe ride for your baby.
How thick should a baby jacket be in a carseat? If you can fit more than one finger under the harness at the child's collarbone, the coat is too thick and is not safe for use with the car seat. (See what properly snug straps look like.)
Can babies wear light sweaters in carseats?Never use clothing or blankets that interfere with providing a properly tightened harness. An unsecured child can come out of the restraint during a crash.
