Amber Heard has completed her first public interview since a jury ruled in Johnny Depp’s favor in his defamation suit against her. Heard will sit down with NBC News’ Savannah Guthrie to discuss the verdict, the trial, and the inescapable influence social media had on the process in a conversation set to air on TODAY and on a special episode of Dateline.

“Even somebody who is sure I am deserving of all this hate and vitriol, even if you think that I’m lying you still couldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that you think on social media there’s been a fair representation,” Heard says in a preview of the interview, which aired on TODAY Monday morning. “ You cannot tell me that you think that this has been fair.”

When Guthrie finally brings up the trial’s verdict—and that the jury rejected Heard’s testimony to rule in Depp’s favor—Heard makes it clear she doesn’t fault them for how Depp’s team was able to sway their viewpoints.

“How could [the jury] not come to that conclusion?” Heard says. “They had sat in those seats and heard over three weeks of nonstop relentless testimony from paid employees and, towards the end of the trial, randos, as I say.”

She continues: “I don’t blame them, I actually understand. [Depp]’s a beloved character, and people feel they know him. He’s a fantastic actor.”

Depp accused Heard of defamation after she referred to herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse” in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed. The trial gained a fervent online following (the worst of it on TikTok) that saw celebrities like Lance Bass imitating Heard’s tearful testimony about the alleged abuse, and Depp fans heading down to the courthouse to wave concert-style posters outside. Though the trial, undoubtedly left huge marks on both of their reputations, Depp is already moving forward with a new album and docuseries on the way.

Additional portions of Heard’s interview will be shown on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s episodes of TODAY, before the hour-long conversation airs on Dateline Friday night at 8 P.M E.T.

Amber Heard has sat down with NBC‘s Savannah Guthrie just two weeks after her ex-husband Johnny Depp won a multi-million defamation trial against her.

The interview was filmed on June 9 and will air on Today this week, and on a Dateline NBC special on June 17 at 8 pm ET. The highly-anticipated interview was filmed in New York City under tight security and secrecy, tactically not shot at NBC’s 30 Rock headquarters in an effort to keep it under wraps.

Last month, a Virginia jury ruled that Heard had defamed Depp in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed where she claimed to be a victim of domestic violence. The Aquaman star must now pay Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages after Depp’s defense team argued his reputation and career had been damaged due to the article.

A similar defamation case had previously taken place in the U.K., where Depp sued The Sun newspaper over an article that called him a “wifebeater.” However, the Pirates of the Caribbean star lost that case after a judge ruled there was sufficient evidence to back up the allegation.

In the interview, Heard tells Guthrie that she understands why the Virginia jury made their decision. “I don’t blame them,” she says. “I actually understand. He’s a beloved character, and people feel they know him. He’s a fantastic actor.” However, she believed the social media coverage of the case had been unfair.

“I don’t care what one thinks about me or what judgments you want to make about what happened in the privacy of my own home, in my marriage, behind closed doors. I don’t presume the average person should know those things. And so I don’t take it personally,” she adds.

The official synopsis for Johnny vs Amber: The US Trial calls it "the inside story of the trial that was streamed around the world and watched by millions on social media".

The documentary is said to feature intimate access to Johnny Depp’s lawyers, legal experts and journalists, with the series giving "a forensic account of the key evidence and turning points of the case from both sides, allowing viewers to make up their own minds about who to believe."

The synopsis continues: "The first of the two-part docuseries investigates Depp’s side as his team detail his abusive childhood and drug dependencies in front of the world and follows his lawyers as they prepare to cross examine Amber Heard, presenting an alternative version of events that show Johnny to be a victim of domestic abuse himself.

More like this

"Depp is one of the biggest stars of his generation, but his reputation lay in tatters after losing a defamation case in London where a judge decided that journalists could justifiably call him a 'wife beater'. Everything is on the line for Johnny as he takes on ex-wife Heard in the US courts in an effort to clear his name.

"With intimate access to his legal team, the series includes behind the scenes footage and first-hand accounts of how the bitter legal battle unfolds. It reveals in graphic detail the struggles inside the dysfunctional and turbulent A-list marriage."

The synopsis then says that the second episode "looks at Heard’s account, including her detailed description of alleged sexual assault told on camera for the first time, and how advocates of Depp mercilessly attacked her via social media".

It continues: "Heard was forced into court by her ex-husband and Hollywood icon, Depp. This documentary looks at Heard’s account of the turbulent marriage as she tries to prove that one of the most loved actors in the world was a violent and abusive husband.

"As global audiences watched on, Heard took to the stand and for the first time described in graphic detail serious allegations of sexual assault only to become vilified on social media. This episode looks at the story behind viral memes and the woman the world chose to hate, but who kept on fighting."

Is Johnny vs Amber: The US Trial a new series?

Johnny vs Amber: The US Trial is a new series, but it is also a follow-up to another discovery+ series from 2021, entitled Johnny vs Amber.

That was also a two-part docuseries, and it featured "explosive evidence, intimate personal archive and in-depth interviews from both legal teams" involved in the 2020 UK libel lawsuit between the two Hollywood stars.
