  • The Flip is one of JBL’s most successful bluetooth products
  • It’s popular for its compact, simple, and high-quality design
  • In this article, we compare the new JBL Flip 6 to the Flip 5

The JBL Flip is probably the most popular product that JBL makes with its small size, ultra-simple design, water-resistant capabilities, and excellent sound quality.

But is it worth getting the newest version, the Flip 6, or is it better to stick with the Flip 5? Let’s find out!

For new buyers, it’s a slam-dunk decision to choose the JBL Flip 6 over the JBL Flip 5, but it is probably best not to upgrade if you already have a Flip 5 in good working order.

The Flip 6 costs the same as the Flip 5 and offers upgrades in every category: sound, durability, software, and design.

The Flip 6 has a slightly better frequency response, is slightly louder, has an adjustable EQ, is fully waterproof and dustproof rather than merely splashproof, has four times the Bluetooth range, and has a more stable design that won’t fall over as easily.

What Is JBL Flip?

The Flip is a Bluetooth speaker made by JBL. It is currently on its 6th iteration, but you can still find the JBL Flip 5.

They are both small enough to fit inside a purse and powerful enough to annoy your upstairs neighbors.

These two JBL Flip speakers offer around 12 hours of battery life and are both water-resistant.

JBL Flip 6 vs JBL Flip 5 – What Has Improved?

Price

Surprisingly, most stores will have the Flip 6 at about the same price as the Flip 5, so if you can find it for the same price at around $130 USD, go for that one.

However, it really depends where you look. When I check the JBL website in my country, New Zealand, I can see the JBL Flip 5 for $10 cheaper at $120 USD.

Sound

The JBL 6 is slightly louder than the JBL Flip 5 overall and the sound quality is better too.

Most notably, the Flip 6 has a subwoofer. It’s not going to give you earth-shattering bass, but it is a step up from the Flip 5 nonetheless.

The JBL 6 features a 20 W RMS for woofer and 10 W RMS for tweeter rather than the 20W RMS that the Flip 5 features. This means it is more powerful and emits a slightly better low-end.

The Flip 6 also allows users to adjust the EQ via the JBL portable app while the JBL 5 doesn’t, choosing on a 1-5 scale between bass, mids, and treble.

Durability

The JBL Flip 6 is fully waterproof and dustproof, meaning you can submerge it completely in water for up to 30 minutes, and won’t get sand in it if you take it to the beach.

Software

The JBL Flip 6 comes with an improved Bluetooth system. The Flip 6 supports Bluetooth 5.1 whereas the Flip 5 comes with Bluetooth 4.2

While this may seem trivial, it actually means four times the range and twice the data transmission speed. Neither the Flip 5 nor 6 have WiFi connectivity.

Features

Both the Flip 5 and the Flip 6 have JBL’s PartyBoost feature, which allows you to connect two JBL speakers together to either go into stereo mode or “party mode”.

Can you connect JBL Flip 5 and 6?

The stereo mode splits both speakers into left and right channels. The party mode simply allows one device, such as your iPhone, to connect to two PartyBoost-compatible JBL speakers at once.

The Flip 6 also comes with adjustable EQ through the JBL Portable app, while the Flip 5 doesn’t.

Battery Life

The battery life on both the Flip 5 and the Flip 6 is advertised at around 12 hours and uses USB-C charging, which means that there is no difference between the battery life of the Flip 5 and the Flip 6.

Design

The JBL Flip 6 improves on the Flip 5 design as well.

The Flip 5 was liable to roll more easily because of its lack of a base. However, the Flip 6 has a small rubber stand that works very well to stabilize the speaker without adding any unnecessary bulkiness or ugliness to the design.

The Flip 6 weighs 550g, which is slightly heavier than the Flip 5.

The JBL Flip 6 comes in ten colors: Steel Grey, Midnight Black, Dusty Pink, River Teal, Fiesta Red, Steel White, Grey Stone, Ocean Blue, Forest Green, or Squad, while the Flip 5 comes with twelve colors (most are the same).

Which Is The Best JBL Flip?

The Best JBL Flip in 2022 is the JBL Flip 6. It offers upgrades in every category besides price; which is typically around $20 higher than the Flip 5.

With added features such as adjustable EQ, a stability stand, fully waterproof and dustproof capabilities, and better Bluetooth, it is a slam dunk choice for new buyers to go with the Flip 6 over the Flip 5.

If you already have the Flip 5, though, it is not worth it to upgrade from the Flip 5 to the Flip 6.
