Can you open a bank account with an expired id

Hey!

So I desperately need 6 points to get myself a State ID, but I currently only have 5 points. The lady who worked at the dmv was SOMEWHAT nice enough to at least give me a pass to comeback TOMORROW with another document. But the only option I have as I don’t have anything else to prove my identity is to open a bank account, the problem with that however is that the only photo ID I have (municipal ID) is expired by about 3 months. Do you think some banks would allow an expired ID?

Can you open a bank account with an expired id

level 1

Simple answer is No. most banks wont take an expired ID. Now even if you open an account tomorrow, the only way to show you have an account is by providing a statement which you wont get until a month after you open the account.

level 2

The expired ID would likely make it tough to get a bank account, but not necessarily impossible.

A statement isn't the only way to show they have an account though.

They could also, get a signed bank letter that basically says u/Jaxter-l7l has an account in good standing with this bank as of this date. It will typically include the name associated with the account, address, and the ABA and DDA.

level 1

Generally speaking, no, they wont, but we cant answer for the banks in your area. If you explained the situation to someone and promised to bring your new ID back right away you might find someone to take pity on you.

level 2

The sheriff’s right. You’ll have to ask but sometimes it’s not even discretionary, it’s a system thing. If they don’t put in a valid date, the program won’t allow them to move forward. Some more advanced places have the technology to go off of your PIN, so you’ll just have to see what they can do.

Would a passport work ,I have seen many non American travelers who open banks here with no American ids

level 1

I can’t think of any bank that would allow an expired if to OPEN an account, especially as a new client. Speak with banks to ask what IDs they can accept, you may be surprised.

level 1

You might get lucky. Usually we don’t, but Covid changed the rules. I know my bank (top 5 major bank) is supposed to stop accepting expired ID’s at the end of June. I cannot speak for other banks. I actually accepted one that expired April 24 today-but that was for a withdrawal, not opening a new account. What’s with the points? What is that for? Are you an immigrant? Do you have a foreign passport? If so, we take those all day!

level 1

Depends on the bank. At our bank, they have to be current for account opening purposes. You will have to check with your bank to see what their policies are.

level 1

My bank, during covid, will accept an ID expired less than 120 days ago for anything OTHER than opening an account because those are federal guidelines. As far as I know, those have never been changed. Unless you already have a bank account, my (pretty-liberal-policy) bank wouldn't be able to help you establish a NEW bank account. But if you previously had an old car loan with us, you're over 65, or you're Amish... I probably couldn't help you either. Sorry buddy

That’s scary I’ve lost an id and the one thing that soothed me is that at least it’s expired makes fraud way too easy . But I have a new id so idk they should have technology thag goes based on the ID number and they shouldn’t be taking expired ID especially if you don’t have a bank card

level 1

Probably not, but you could always get a state ID!

level 2

That’s what I’m literally trying to get, but they wouldn’t accept my health insurance card because it’s missing 1 of the last names I have on my birth certificate and ss 😕

level 1

Although I’m still having to decide on what to do to get an “ACTUAL ID”, I appreciate the responses. I’m thinking of trying my luck in getting a passport instead.

level 1

Apply for a passport with your birth certificate. Order a physical SS card. Do you not have any bank accounts or credit cards? You can open a credit card online. You can also open online bank accounts online, though not sure what they might require for ID. You can also request a name change on your insurance card.

For my bank in IL, we currently accept expired IDs because there is a blanket order from the State government to accept them until a certain date. But only for expirations during the range of the COVID suspension of ID services. However, I don't think we would accept a municipal ID, because at least the ones that exist around here have very few identity verifications.

level 1

Nope I tried it 3 times.

It’s good enough for law enforcement to identify but it won’t even work for job purposes.

level 1

Absolutely not at my bank. Can’t speak on everyone’s procedures though

In the country where I live, we are human first, if you have a family member or a closer friend who has been banking in the bank you want to open accounts, they have a good record, we can use them as your reference and one secondary ID which it can be your social security card to help you to start to meet your immediate need, then bring a piece of government photo ID later. Not everyone has IDs, sometimes social workers or even police officers will be helping to approve who they are.
