Can you put wet curly hair in a bonnet

Today’s video is a simple one, but something I get asked very often is how to put on a bonnet and the best ways to preserve your curls at night. With naturally curly hair, it’s best to protect your curls at night in order to prolong your wash days.

There are several ways to protect your curls at night, including:

  • Satin or silk bonnet
  • Pineapple with a scrunchie + satin/silk pillowcase
  • Satin/sill hair scarf or wrap

Satin or Silk?

Both are great for protecting your curls, and it’s really personal preference and which material you like more. In my opinion, satin feels more slippery and glossy, and is more cooling. Silk is very soft and has more of a dull appearance. Silk is natural fiber and satin is a synthetic weave.

How to Find the Right Bonnet

Finding the right fitting the bonnet is like finding the right bra. It can be tough when ordering online or buying the in store because it’s hard to tell the size.

It’s important to get the right so your curls so it’s effective. If your bonnet is too tight, your curls could be smushed against your scalp and become mis-shaped.

If it’s too big, your curls will fall and not be held up on top of your head. It can also slide off when sleeping if it’s not snug enough against your hairline.

If you have very long, thick hair, look for an extra-large size. If you have short or low density hair, you should be fine with a regular size.

I also look for bonnets that do not have a thick headband design around the rim, because I find those to be uncomfortable to sleep in.

Pineapple or no Pineapple?

If you do not prefer to wear a bonnet, the next best option is to wear your curls up on top of your head using a satin/silk scrunchie. This is called a “pineapple” in the curl girl community because of the appearance. This protects the inside layer of your curls since just the underside is touching the surface of your pillow. It’s highly recommended to still sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase with this method.

Which way do you prefer to sleep with your curls? Have you found the right bonnet?

Can you put wet curly hair in a bonnet

Quarantine has given me a great opportunity to spend time on doing my hair and caring for it. My routine is usually done in the morning, but i’ll be heading back to school soon and as I take earlier classes and tend to want to enjoy my time in bed as much as possible i’m not sure i’ll have as much time to wash + style my hair in the mornings. Before CGM I always just washed my hair and slept on it and let it dry overnight, and that was one less thing I had to do in the morning.

If I do my routine at night and sleep on it wet in a silk bonnet, would that allow me to SOTC in the morning and go? Or is there another way I could make it easier/less time consuming to do my routine? I’ll do it in the mornings if I have to but I really want to find a way to be able to stay in bed longer lol.
