Vapes come in all shapes and sizes, and are often seen as an alternative to tobacco cigarettes.

Some are refillable and chargeable, while others are disposable yet still powered by a single battery, which vaporises liquid or ‘vape juice’. Often, this contains nicotine and have a fruity, sweet, or menthol flavour.

Those who enjoy any type of vaping may wonder if they’ll be able to bring their vape with them if they’re travelling abroad – specifically when it comes to the aeroplane.

So, what rules are currently in place for vapes on planes?

Here’s all you need to know.

Can you take disposable vapes on a plane in the UK?

Firstly, you (obviously) can’t smoke a vape on the plane.

Smoking of any kind is banned on flights – so wait until landing and exiting the airport, at the designated spot, before taking a drag – or else you could face a fine.

However, you are allowed to travel with vapes or e-cigarettes – depending on your destination.

British Airways (BA) warns on its website: ‘National laws for using and selling e-cigarettes change frequently and some countries have banned their use altogether.

‘Please check local regulations for your destination before you travel.’

Countries where vapes are known to be completely illegal include Thailand, India and Singapore. Bring one in, and you could land a hefty fine or even face prison time.

If your destination does allow them, then you will be expected to keep them in your hand luggage – i.e. the bag you carry on to the plane – and not be placed in the hold.

Vapoholic also reminds vapers that they’ll need to put any vapes in a liquids bag when going through security.

What do airlines say about vapes?

BA’s rules for vape and e-cigs say: ‘You cannot use e-cigarettes or similar items on board.

‘Place these items in your hand baggage… and protect each of them to prevent accidental activation. If there are any liquid components, you also need to follow the safety requirements for liquids.’

easyJetadds: ‘You can carry e-cigarettes and a maximum of two spare batteries in your cabin bag – but not in the hold.’

Budget airline Ryanair states: ‘You can take e-cigs on the plane but you cannot use them.’

Virgin Atlanticdoes allow e-cigarettes on board in hand luggage, but adds in a section on prohibited items: ‘For flights to and from India, e-cigarettes are not permitted.’

On its website, Wizz Air notes: ‘Yes, You can carry electronic cigarettes including e-cigars and other personal vaporisers containing batteries, for personal use, in your carry-on baggage only. 

‘Recharging of these devices and / or batteries on board the aircraft is not permitted and you must take measures to prevent accidental activation.

‘It is prohibited to include electronic cigarettes in checked baggage.’

Finally, Jet2 says: ‘E-cigarettes may be carried in cabin baggage providing they are individually protected, however these are prohibited to be used onboard our aircraft and within airports (unless in designated smoking areas).’

Can you take disposable vapes on a plane in the UK? It’s a question many of you have been asking recently, so we thought it was time to set the record straight to help our customers stay within the rules when travelling abroad!

While most of us love nothing more than getting away for a week or two, travelling can prove to be a bit of a minefield for us vapers, what with all the different rules and regs on vape devices and e-liquid.

So, if you’re off on your jollies anytime soon, here’s our “can you take disposable vapes on a plane UK?” post, which should clear up any confusion and help you stay out of hot water! 

Can You Take Disposable Vapes On a Plane? Airport Rules

Due to the constant threat of terrorism, airport security is tight. This can make for long queues and strict rules on what we can travel with, although these are just minor inconveniences that are necessary for keeping us all safe. 

If you’re familiar with the rules on flying with e-liquid and refillable vapes then you’ll know that you’re allowed to take them on-board, as long as they’re stored in your hand luggage (if you aren’t familiar with those rules then check out our ‘Can You Take Vapes on a Plane?’ blog).

But for those who love the convenience of throw-away devices, can you take disposable vapes on a plane too? The answer is yes, you can, although there are some rules you’ll need to stick to. 

Firstly, no vapes can be taken in your hold baggage (that’s the suitcase you deposit at the check-in desk). Instead, you’ll need to store your disposable vapes in your hand luggage. This is to remove the small risk of fire which can occur when electrical devices are stored in the hold. 

You’ll also need to make sure the disposable vapes are stored in the plastic bag you’re given to store your liquids. Each passenger is permitted to take only one liquids bag, so keep this in mind before you pack dozens of units as any vapes that won’t fit will need to be left behind!

How Many Disposable Vapes Can You Take On a Plane?

So now we know it’s possible to fly with throw-away units, are there any limits on the amount you can take and, if so, how many disposable vapes can you take on a plane? 

This is where things are a little less clear. When we did some digging into how many disposable vapes you can take on a plane, we couldn’t find any specific rules in place.

Most airlines limit the number of batteries you can take on a flight, so it stands to reason they might also have restrictions on the number of disposables you can take on a flight. If you’re thinking of travelling with quite a few then we’d advise checking with the airline first.

With that said, as we already pointed out, your disposables will need to be stored in your liquids bag. So even if you aren’t planning on taking any liquids, you’ll be limited in the number you can fit into the bag anyway.

Can You Vape On a Plane?

Even though you’re allowed to take vapes on your flight, don’t be fooled into believing you’re allowed to use them while you’re on-board. Despite there being no government-enforced rules in place concerning vaping on commercial flights in the UK, no airlines will allow you to use your e-cigarette.

Vaping while you’re on board will be treated similarly to smoking, so those breaking this rule run the risk of fines and even the possibility of being ejected from the flight (while it’s grounded, of course!) 

So no matter how tempted you might be to have a few cheeky, discreet puffs, resist the urge as getting caught is simply not worth it!
