Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers bootleg characters

Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers releases today on Disney+, and if you missed my prior review of the film – you would know that I absolutely loved the film. One of my biggest praises of the film was down to the countless number of cameos which are featured throughout the film’s plot.

It goes without saying that spoilers will be mentioned throughout the article, so you have been warned!

Opening Credits

As any Disney film does, the film starts with the iconic castle opening, however, for Rescue Rangers – the opening has a twist to it. Similar to the events of the film, the castle gets an identity switch and takes characteristics from existing Disney icons.

We see The Sultan’s Palace from Aladdin, Elsa’s Castle from Frozen, Prince Eric’s Castle from The Little Mermaid, and what I assume to be the castle featured in the opening for 2018’s Incredibles 2. It perfectly sets up the film and prepares the audience for what’s in store…

The Early Days

In 1982. when we first meet our protagonists at Unionville Elementary School we’re introduced to a small number of references. The first is in the form of a car, which is very reminiscent of Benny the Cab from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Whilst, not the exact same car, the more blue coloured car shares the same look as he drops his children, two bumper cars off at the elementary school.

When Chip first meets Dale, he is seen to own a Knight Rider lunchbox. Knight Rider, if you weren’t aware was an action crime drama television series, starring David Hasselhoff from 1982 to 1986. Hasselhoff starred as Michael Knight, a sleek and modern crime fighter assisted by KITT, an advanced, artificially intelligent, self-aware, and nearly indestructible car. The lunchbox is obviously culturally relevant, given the flashbacks are in fact set during 1982 – nice touch!

A really interesting blink and you’ll miss it reference, there is a Mickey Mouse alarm clock in one of the chipmunks’ houses. The same scene features a scene where Chip n Dale are watching Abbott and Costello, where one of the two (Lou Costello) has been replaced by an animated character, who looks a lot like Horace Horsecollar – one of Mickey Mouse’s best pals.

The school days don’t contain too many more easter eggs, however, an animated Autobot from Transformerscan be seen in the crowd of a talent show. The following sequences also see Chip ‘n Dale make an appearance in an episode of Full House, he footage is in fact taken from Season 3, Episode 9 titled “Dr. Dare Rides Again” where Pete Bianco (Scott Baio) and Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) are singing (You Make Me Wanna) Shout!

The Rescue Rangers Age

Obviously, we get to see the Rescue Rangers in their full glory, including a glimpse of a fictional episode of Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers titled “Fat Cat Attack”. The episode itself doesn’t actually exist, but features prominent Rescue Rangers villain Fat Cat, as he is stopped by the Rescue Rangers by becoming distracted with Chip’s imaginary birds after his head is hit. This is a great touch, as the episode is heavily referenced in the final act…

Rescue Rangers director Akiva Schaffer shows up in a cameo role as the director of the episode “Fat Cat Attack”. The scene soon evolves into some form of a Rescue Rangers party, and this is where more familiar faces show up… The Three Little Pigs and Roger Rabbit are seen dancing with Chip ‘n Dale, whilst Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat are on DJ duties – the two of course appeared in Abdul’s video for her song “Opposites Attract” in 1989.

Chip decides to leave Rescue Ranger in hopes of pursuing a James Bond-esque pilot, however, the show doesn’t get picked up and is instead cancelled. A nice reference, however, to “Double ‘O Chipmunk” – the forty-fifth episode of Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers where Chip and Dale become involved in a real spy adventure emulating their heroes Dirk Suave (Double ‘O Super-Spy) and Oddshoe,

Fan Con – Round 1

There are lots to spot during both sections of the film which take place at the nostalgia convention circuit, FanCon. Both guests of the convention, and the general cosplay all feature references to be spotted. Here’s who I was able to spot!

Amongst the first sets of crowds, we see fans dressing up as the likes of Mario, Lilo (from Lilo & Stitch), Fat Thor (from Avengers: Endgame), Ash Ketchum (from Pokémon the Series), and Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and Dorothy (from The Wizard of Oz). We see a glimpse of a fan wearing Sonic The Hedgehog‘s iconic hair, two mice also are seen dressed as Princess Leia (from Star Wars: A New Hope) and Kylo Ren (Star Wars: The Force Awakens). The actual animated Sailor Moon can be seen at the front of the crowds, as they await Baloo from The Jungle Book (2016) to make a public appearance.

Jeff Bennett voices Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast (1991), who has a stand at Fan Con next to Dale’s, and features throughout the film, This is not the first time Bennett has voiced the role, having prior voiced Lumiere in a few of the Kingdom Hearts video games, Tigra, from The Avengers: United They Stand (1999) set within the Marvel Animated Universe shows up, another guest at Fan Con.

Also situated near Dale and Lumiere is, “The One and Only!” Ugly Sonic, the first design iteration from 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, somehow has a prominent role during the events of the film. We first see him at Fan Con, and he does show up alongside the FBI during the film’s third act. Whilst he chats with Dale, we see someone cosplaying as Wonder Woman walks past.

Humble Abodes and Assorted References

Chip returns to his home, and a news broadcast reveals none other than Flounder (from The Little Mermaid) has gone missing… Marking the sixth disappearance of toons at that point in the story. In Chip’s fridge, we get a glimpse of some of the food he likes to snack on. There is some Ice Age Ice Cream with Scrat seen on the label, Frozone (from The Incredibles) Food Veggie Medley and Looney Tunes Pasta with Foghorn Leghorn on the label

The other animated chipmunks, Alvin and the Chipmunks show up and are revealed to now be rapping, as we see them on Chip’s TV. We get some explanation of how Flounder goes missing when Chip is called to Monterrey Jack/Monty’s apartment. Monty explains how the Valley Gang bootleg anyone who owes them money… Whilst this is all going on there is a gag that Gadget and Zipper got together since the show ended and have had children, lots and lots of children.

We’re treated to a bunch of parody film posters, in the form of Fast and Furious Babies, Mr Doubtfire with Meryl Streep in the titular role, and get a glimpse of a banner for Batman vs. ET – which we later see Chip and Millie the Dog watching at home… We see Dobby (from the Harry Potter franchise) appear in an advertisement for Gucci, a nice touch given when presented with clothes, he is in fact a free elf!

When the police arrive at Monty’s home, one of the police cars parked outside the building is animated in the style of one of the cars from the Pixar Cars universe. Amongst the police officers, are Wynnchel and Duncan – the security staff for Sugar Rush within the world of Wreck-It-Ralph.

Monty’s smelly cheese leads the Rescue Rangers to Main Street, the iconic Disney Parks land where we see a couple more cameos. On the way there, we see yet another car from the Cars universe! Dale also sings the original series’ theme tune on the way – a nice touch. Linda Flynn-Fletcher (Phineas and Ferb’s mum) can be seen selling cupcakes on Main Street. Max, Prince Eric’s loyal Sheepdog (from The Little Mermaid) is also seen blowing bubbles out of a window.

Uncanny Valley

Uncanny Valley is home to the place when animation from back in the early 00s where everything animated looked real, but nothing looked right. Mars Needs Moms comes to mind for me. A hilarious reference is when two cats from Cats (2019) show up having a catfight.

We meet Bob the Viking Dwarf, played by Seth Rogen who has “Polar Express eyes”. Sweet Pete’s factory features and recycles merchandise which never got sold. Amongst the waste, we see Luxo Jr. / Pixar balls, and Shrek body wash. The waste is made into toy-lets… it’s quite a funny pun. We even get Rogen’s iconic laugh a few times.

Sweet Pete, the leader of the Valley Gang is revealed to be none other than Peter Pan (voiced by Will Arnett). The boy who never grew up ended up growing up. We see that as he hit puberty, he got sacked and then he made his own bootleg movie. Once it became successful, he made further films including characters with similarities from the likes of Beauty and the Beast, Casper and Lady and The Tramp.

As the two make an escape through the toilet, we see a glimpse of a Rapunzel doll from Tangled, and there’s a fun gag as the two hold onto her hair and it keeps getting longer. Lego Miserables (a spoof of Les Miserables) is seen on a billboard as the two leave the sewers as well.

Dale’s home features a shrine to the original Rescue Rangers show. We see every episode on VHS, video games, an arcade machine, comic books, pins, figures, everything classed as memorabilia – he has it! A really nice touch of acknowledgement for the original series.

Sauna

When the two follow Sweet Pete to a local sauna, the pair must disguise as Rat Plumbers. Dale uses a New York accent which hilariously hey says got him fired from a role on the TV show Law and Order. We get another funny dig at the Yankee accent when Chip references Dustin Hoffman’s improvised line in Midnight Cowboy, “I’m walking here” – going along with Dale’s plan for a disguise.

I think one of the most bizarre cameos at this point in the film is an appearance by Randy Marsh from South Park showing up in the sauna too, one of my favourite appearances I think. Another odd reference is a blink and you’ll miss it, packaging of nuts featuring Moana themed branding, which didn’t make too much sense when I spotted it – an Easter Egg nonetheless!

San Pedro Docks

The Rescue Rangers discover the bootlegged characters are taken to San Pedro docks, using Sweet Pete’s step counter, and Captain Putty makes another reference to a time when Nick Jr. caused chaos following a fake tip, previously mentioned from Ellie’s backstory. The Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig are mentioned in the events of the backstory too.

Photos within the docks reveal that characters like Sideshow Bob (from The Simpsons), Flounder, Gus (from Cinderella), one of Tweedledee/Tweedledum (from Alice in Wonderland, Jiminy Cricket (from Pinocchio), Syndrome (from The Incredibles), The Pink Panther, Garfield, and Sneezy (from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves) have been experimented on through “concept art” on the walls.

Whilst in the machine, it renders what Chip ‘n Dale would look like if they were surgically re-edited… We see animation styles from the likes of The Simpsons, Rick and Morty, some Kawaii styles, and a DC Animated Superhero style, amongst other various animation styles. During the scene, Chip gets his very own Snoopy ear too.

The Evidence Room

When Chip and Dale exit the CG Machine, they’re welcomed by what I like to call the evidence room. Filled to the brim with Easter Eggs… Here’s a recap of everything I could make out:

  • Jimmy Neutron‘s Hair
  • Samurai Jack‘s Sword
  • Detective Pikachu‘s Tail
  • Shenron’s Body – Dragon Ball Z
  • The Pink Panther‘s Mouth
  • Monty’s Moustache – Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers (of course!)
  • Keyblade – Kingdom Hearts
  • Hat – The Smurfs
  • Rocky the Flying Squirrel’s Cap –Rocky and Bullwinkle
  • Krusty Krab Employee Hat – Spongebob Squarepants
  • Mickey Mouse’s Glove
  • Mr Potato Head’s Torso – Toy Story
  • Robin Hood‘s Hat
  • Momo the Winged Lemur’s Ears – Avatar: The Last Airbender
  • Pete’s Peg Leg – Mickey Mouse and Friends
  • Ickis’ Left Ear and Mouth – Aaahh!!! Real Monsters

If there are any from this scene I have missed, or been unable to identify, then please get in touch on Twitter!

Later on, we get another Disney Parks reference – this time with the Rescue Rangers in front of Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle. Another surprise cameo, was when Butthead (from Beavis and Butthead) makes an appearance in the form of a political advertisement “Vote Senator Butthead – Vote to get tough on Bootleg Laws”

Fan Con – Round 2

I am convinced there is someone cosplaying as George Lucas, seen on the escalator during the second time we’re at Fan Con. Other cosplays we see include the Queen of Hearts (Alice in Wonderland), someone dressed as a Sim, Pickle Rick (from Rick and Morty), a Lego Minifigure, Deadpool, Borat, Bender (from Futurama), Speed Racer (or Turbo from Wreck-It Ralph), Ash Ketchum, an Ewok, Geralt (from The Witcher). We even get someone Disneybounding as Minnie Mouse.

Paul Rudd is seen discussing his superhero film, which never got made “Aunt Man” where his powers would be charming aunts, this film was obviously replaced with Marvel Studios’ 2015 release Ant-Man – a surprising appearance from an actor, I must admit.

Whilst chasing after the Rescue Rangers, we bump into the Mane Six from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and then Cubby (from Peter Pan) who shares a moment with Sweet Pete. Chip and Dale end up hidden underneath a table, where none other than He-Man and Skeletor (from Masters of the Universe) are sitting. A Voltron and Doc McStuffins also make an appearance the second time around at Fan Con too.

We get a really fun meta scene where Seth Rogen’s animated selves meet each other. During the scene, we see Bob The Viking Dwarf (Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers) laughed at by none other than three of Seth Rogen’s former animated characters – B.O.B from Monsters vs Aliens, Mantis from Kung Fu Panda and Pumbaa from The Lion King (2019)

I think I spotted a character from Netflix’s animated series Big Mouth at one point in the background of a scene set at the police station… ? The character appears to be Detective Flores, thanks to Jordan who let me know about that one

The Bootlegs

During the final act, changes are made to a few characters. We see Jimmy the Polar Bear turned into a fairy similar to one from Sleeping Beauty, with similar colours to Merryweather. Sweet Pete soon becomes a super amalgamation of multiple characters – a bit like a Chimera.

Pete’s new form features Fat Cat’s head (Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers), Marie’s Bow (The Aristocats), John Silver’s jacket (Treasure Planet), Wreck-It-Ralph’s left arm (even quoting his catchphrase “I’m Gonna Wreck It!”), Shredder’s Right Arm (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003)) which shoots out Bonzai Bills from the Super Mario franchise), Woody’s Right Leg (Toy Story) and Optimus Prime’s Left Leg (Transformers), and to top it of… Mickey Mouse’s shorts!

We get a fun scene where Chip and Dale are chased through the multiple bootleg sets. We see Pooj the Fat Honey Bear – a clear bootleg of Winnie The Pooh with its stars Pooh, Tigger and Piglet all having been turned into bootlegs. We also see bootlegged versions of members of The Simpsons family, and then none other than Pete from Mickey Mouse appearing as Aladdin on his Magic Carpet in a bootleg version.

We get a pretty neat Jurassic Park reference from when the T-Rex arrives and attacks the raptors in the Welcome Centre, however, in Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers, the T-Rex is swapped for Pete’s Chimera form knocking down a similar banner…

Amongst the rescued Bootleg characters in the closing moments of the film, we see parts of the following characters mixed into other iconic toons:

  • Phineas – Phineas and Ferb
  • Abu – Aladdin
  • Woody Woodpecker
  • Samurai Jack
  • Jiminy Cricket – Pinocchio
  • Zazu – The Lion King
  • Patrick – SpongeBob Squarepants
  • Launchpad McQuack – DuckTales
  • Mason “Dipper” Pines – Gravity Falls
  • Fred Flintstone – The Flintstones
  • Tigger – Winnie The Pooh
  • Cheshire Cat – Alice in Wonderland
  • Naruto
  • Gus – Cinderella
  • Sneezy – Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
  • Flounder – The Little Mermaid
  • Bambi
  • Tiana – The Princess and The Frog
  • Monty with the features of Dumbo
  • A Purple Care Bear

And finally… Darkwing Duck appears in the closing moments of the mid-credits, “We Want Darkwing!”. That is completely right… Disney+! When are we getting that Darkwing Duck series?!

That rounds off Every Cameo and Reference in Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers(that I could find!). Once again, if there are any I have missed, then please get in touch on Twitter! The more Easter Eggs the better!
